A military technician is a older term for civilian employees working full time at a reserve or national guard facility. It is a federal (GS) position. It does require active service, so IRR does not count.

MAJ (Join to see) Technician jobs cover all MOS, AFSC or Navy rates. It depends on the particular unit you are with especially in Army and Air Guard units.

If you are looking for a technician position I would look at both Army and Air Guard as well. The difference between the Reserves and the Guard is the National Guard has a unique dual mission that consists of both Federal and State roles.

GS position that requires active membership in the Army Reserves - sometimes you have to be a member of the unit you support in the civilian side but that changed somewhat in 2011 or so.
I was a MILTECH for about 7 years, the first 5 I had to be an active drilling member of the 373D MI. Once the Unit Administrators transferred over to RPACs I got to switch to any unit within the 88th RSC but I had to be drilling.

Thank you for your response ma'am. Would love to hear how an ordinary day looked like as a MILTECH since I was just referred. Are you basically a Civilian employee in a Military uniform that goes to drill on weekends and a few weeks during the week?

Well I was a unit administrator, I basically ran the company when the commander was gone with the support of the training NCOs. Mon-Fri, 40 hrs a week in civilian clothes and status. On weekends I was a normal reservist - I was also the company XO so it fit well with my civilian job.

It’s a challenging role but a good one and I loved it. I didn’t like it when we transitioned to RPACs as I had way too many Soldiers to support and I couldn’t give them all the attention they derserved.
