What is a "self correcting" land nav course?

Anyone mind explaining this to me like I'm 5? I just read that Ranger School has a self correcting land nav course? I'm not too good at it and trying to get better.

A self correcting course is one that the points have the grids on them. If you find any points you will be able to find your location on a map. Although I can't recall if Ranger school is.

When I went to Ranger school, it was a self-protecting land nav course... As in, the points were very well protected from being found by walls of briars, swamps, and darkness.

Quite simply put, each of the designated points include not only the point designation (usually an alphanumeric like "JT8") but also the full grid coordinate (usually 8 digits). Thus, if you come up to "your point" you are able to verify that it is ACTUALLY your point; and if it is not, you are able to identify where you ARE so that you can get to your ACTUAL point.

Uwharrie National Forest’s *Bush Monster* (as well as other terrain features) was infamous for preventing easy access to *points.* Many that tried to mano-a-mano straight line azimuths through said vegetation in addition to becoming disoriented, often found themselves pick pocketed of any unsecured (via idiot cord) gear. Recall candidates losing their topo map, compass, etc., when trying to arm wrestle (at night and in the rain) Mother Nature’s thorny greenery.

Long story short —> the most effective/smart route from Point *A* to Point *B* is not necessarily a straight line. If you start on the South Pole, every direction is in fact North, anywhere else, good luck.

I don’t know about Ranger School’s version of this but as CPT Private RallyPoint Member and SFC Casey O'Mally stated, the points have grids.

I will also say I have seen self correcting courses bounded by four linear terrain features (like the ubiquitous Ft Bragg fire break) where if you hit a fire break you are off the course….and you know it. Also the start points are on said fire breaks so that if you bolo a leg of the course, you can pick up the next one without the previous one.
