What is Fort Hunter Liggett like?

I've only been there for summer AT. Out in the middle of Nowhere, California.

It gets hot AF. weeks above 100.

SGT Jysamon “Farid” Sanouvong HA,,,, Fort Hungry Lizard, been a long time.....Was our off post "local" training area when I was stationed at Fort Ord.. Hunter Liggett facilities were ancient in the mid to late 80's when I was there (not that we used the facilities much, mostly that was a reserve / guard deal, we just used the training areas sea to highway )

I've been there for ATs and planning conferences. My opinion of Liggett is not a good one. That place sucks.

I was there for Annual Training a couple years ago, so take what I say with a grain of salt. In summer, it's hot for sure, dry and dusty. The main post isn't too big, and didn't have a lot of amenities, but it has a certain charm to it. I spent most of my AT however at nearby Camp Roberts, where the facilities had to be 60 year old if they were a day, so while Hunter Liggett may not be the center of excitement in the Army, it could be worse.

I was stationed there from 1981 to 1983 as part of the old Combat Development Experimentation Command, Engineer Support company. It was a desolate post then and we lived in open bay barracks. We stayed busy doing construction projects, and field training in support of the experiments and it was a great learning experience. There was a lot to do on your off time; If you enjoyed hiking, camping, mountaineering and shooting. The Palisades were a great rock formation to practice climbing and repelling.
Don't know how it is now though.

Spent tons of time there...

Went up against the Australians, British, Canadians, Americans - Marines/80duece/101st/ Big Red 1....45 days straight....We Won 97% of engagements....

Walked/humped the Santa Lucia Mts. for 36 miles one night....then another 3 nights...1st time I heard our 1Sgt ever complain...SF/Pathfinder/Vietnam Vet....Bitched that command thought we were mountain goats....

Manchu Mile always started here and ended at the Planet...Ever 3 months....Had to keep that special buckle you know...

Hot as hell....colder than a witches tit....we had snow for 2 days during one FTX...most hated it as they were/had been city boys who never seen snow or that type of cold....

So, pack accordingly and expect to be bored as hell. It's a shithole in the middle of nowhere!
