If you like fishing, hunting, canoeing, pretty much outdoor type stuff, you'll love it here. There are the normal stores around for your daily needs. For malls, there are those in Springfield, which is about 80 miles, or you have malls in Saint Louis, which is about 130 miles. There is also Saint James and Kansas City. Both are farther away than Saint Louis. Pro Baseball in Saint Louis and Kansas City. Pro Football in Kansas City, Mo..
Some times I wonder what soldier expect from the Forts they are assigned. Lots of times it makes me think they are spoiled with where they have been. It's what you make of where you are at.
So enjoy where you are, because there are way worse places to be. On base has more or less the same sort of stuff as any other base I've been to. The nearby towns have a lot of used car dealerships, barber shops and fast food, but not a whole lot beyond that. Basically it's not a great location, but if you put in the effort you can still have a good time. I've been in some pretty nice places and people still manage to be miserable there, so just like everywhere it'll be what you make it. There is not much to do near post as said but if you travel to the Ozarks, Springfield, or St Louis then you will always find something to do. Kansas City is within 25 mile radius depending on which route you take. When not exploring those aforementioned areas focus on continued education. The education center on post offers a plethora of programs and options for the busies Soldiers as long as you put forth the effort. Stay away from the trainees! The surrounding area is good for outdoor activities. There are wineries close buy and if you like antiques there are plenty of shops/markets within a 20 to 40 minute drive in either direction. Waynesville has some okay places to eat. My wife and I would go to Rolla or Lebanon to eat as well. Both are short drives. Lake of the Ozarks is great during the summer. They have a nice resort out there. We spent a lot of time in Springfield and it was cheaper for our family to fly there than to fly into FLW or St. Louis. We did not visit St. Louis much because it is a two hour drive and traffic is crazy. During Christmas time there are various light displays on the St. Louis area so we would take our kids and grandkids. From 2002 to 2017 the area has improved alot. Leaders are working to have bigger businesses to the area. Like with any duty station the FLW area is what you make of it. I used to always tell my privates especially the ones coming from OSUT don't act like a trainee act like a soldier now there will be tons of NCO's especially Drill Sergeants around and chances are most of them will think you are a Trainee. Remember the basics about being a soldier and do your job and move on. I always felt bad when young soldiers got stuck never leaving a Tradoc command for there first PCS. Remember Tradoc is totally different then the rest of the Army.
