What is it like to have Hawaii as your first duty station?

I was there back in the late 80s and I doubt it has changed much. Hawaii is like any other concrete jungle. Everything but your car registration is going to cost more. You will probably experience some discrimination from some islanders, it has a vast amount of beauty, and partake in it as much as you can, the water and sea life are incredible. And like any other big city comes congested highways and crime. It had one of the largest divorce rates for Military personnel. In fact I was part of that rate. Lastly, you may be in paradise, but your training and operations are on a high operational tempo. Good luck

I was there from 82/84, I truly hope you don’t mind walking your ass off, aside from the around the Island Death march and the deployments to the big island and getting divorced it was beautiful. When your on duty always do your best. But when you have time off get away and see things watch out for the woman/men on hotel street and there are areas you don’t want to go. I was fortunate enough to get to know a local family, my ex wife babysat for them . We went all over with them met most of the family did things you normally don’t get to see or do

Congrats. It took me 14 years to get here.
In general:
Traffic is terrible
The roads are terrible
The weather is amazing all year, and there is tons of stuff to do
Cost of living is generally high
Duty stations vary depending on where you are at. Schofield is a larger installation with more amenities while FT Shafter is smaller and much more rank heavy.

MAJ James Oerding
I lived and worked in Oaho (Ft. Shafter) as a DA civilian, and after about 4 1/2 years there, I found the place was closing in on me, and so transferred the Pentagon. Haoly civilians have a hard time getting promoted in Hawaii. But before that I visited every island except Niiihao, forbidden then but now has tours, and have driven every paved road and many unpaved ones in every island. Don't miss the Big island. It is one of the most beautiful scenic places on earth, and I have been to 108 countries to date.
