What is required to get your interim clearance granted by your local command? We were told you need your National Background Check to clear 1st and that could take 1-2 years. My husband needs it to schedule school for his new job, however our DEROS and ETS date are about 5 months away. And his acceptance letter for his new mos is only good for 1 year. So how do you obtain an Interim Clearance quicker than 1-2 years?

Interim TS clearances takes around 45 days. Your NAC has to show in JPAS before the interim TS can be granted.

An interim isn't granted by the local command - it's granted by the base Installation Security Office. The command can grant access if necessary and during deployment there is the ability for a commander to grant access until someone gets their clearance done. But commanders can't grant clearances. That's ISO (interim) and CCF (adjudication and final).

If you're getting a secret that's a NACLC. For a TS (which I'm assuming you need if you're tagging 35L) that's a SSBI. SSBI investigations can take anywhere from 6 months to a year. It depends on what's in your SF86. If you have foreign family or acquaintances that can slow it down. A NACLC should not take 1-2 years to adjudicate. That's just for a Secret - they were handing those out several years ago to brand new privates for awhile.

Even an interim TS shouldn't take that long for the ISO to grant it. I've never seen an interim for anyone take 45 days to get granted. Even if an interim is granted, the final could be denied. Or if an interim is denied, a final can be granted.

When did he submit his SF86 on eQuip? You need to go talk to the S2.

I have read the DoD will be the proponent of clearances within their domain.

I had this happen with a 35L applicant in Japan. We contacted the branch manager and he had to extend his DEROS several times and request the branch manager to take him off his assignment. If your spouse is 5 months from DEROS they should already be on assignment.

They used to be able to offer a temp. Clearance, Let the school/command work it out.

OPM will not even open an investigation if you have less then one year of service left.
