Actually authorized and implemented? 5 Star rank for Bradley and Ike. Navy had some too. Leahy and Halsey come to mind. You'll see the O-10 on the pay scale but there hasn't been one since the WW2 era. You wouldn't want to see it anymore because it would have to be really bad to need it. BTW the 5 star rank is common around the world, especially in the small potato nations.

BTW the Career Ambassadors have 5 Star equivalent rank.

John Pershing was promoted to "general of the armies" in 1919, from what was then the highest rank, the four-star rank of general. Under the regulations of the time, he was permitted to choose his insignia, and he chose four gold stars, in contrast to the four silver stars used by U.S. general and admiral rank insignia.

In 1945, in preparation for the invasion of Japan, it was proposed[by whom?] that General Douglas MacArthur be promoted to "general of the armies", and that this would explicitly be a six-star rank.[citation needed] However, this and a subsequent proposal in 1955 were never adopted.

In 1976, as part of the American Bicentennial celebrations, a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress stated that "it is considered fitting and proper that no officer of the United States Army should outrank Lieutenant General George Washington". Hence, it was resolved that "the grade of General of the Armies of the United States (be) established" and George Washington be posthumously appointed to this grade.[9]

0-8 is the highest permanent rank. All ranks above that require specific Congressional approval, are term limited and require another Congressional approval to retire at that rank. Also the last rank a promotion board is held for. In theory (and in some actual practice), if a three or four star cannot find another equivalent job at the end of their two year tenure in grade, they have to retire or revert back to their permanent rank of 08. Believe it was set up this way to honor Washington to ensure that no officer would ever equal his final permanent rank of Lt General.

Secretary of the Army. General of the Armies of the United States also known as General of the Armies would still technically fall under a civilian Service Secretary administratively due to Title 10 § 3013; GA was only created when GA John Pershing was promoted due to his role commanding the American Expeditionary Forces, a joint Army/Navy/Marine Force, giving him seniority over other Generals/Admirals. The Navy has a similar rank, senior to Fleet Admiral (FADM), known as Admiral of the Navy (AN), held by AN George Dewey. The reason why 5 & 6 star ranks aren't used anymore is due to other countries not currently utilizing anything higher than 4 star rank for active duty personnel; it's been said that using a six star rank would "insult the French" during WW2.

Sherman and Philip Sheridian as 4 star General in Chief of the Army and George Marshall, Douglass MacArthur, Dwight David Eisenhower, Hap Arnold, and Omar Bradley as 5 star Generals of the Army.

The absolute highest rank in the US Army is held by George Washington who, on July 4, 1976, was posthumously promoted to General of the Armies. This is not specified as a 6-star rank but Congress did debate establishing such a rank during WWII as if the invasion of Japan had been attempted, you'd have multiple 5-stars involved, as well as to give an American commander peerage with any potential British Field Marshals that might have been there. The same Congressional resolution also specifies that no officer in the Army should ever outrank Washington so, presumably, should a 6-star rank ever be created, Washington would be either posthumously promoted again to either a higher rank or before any such appointment to a 6-star rank so as to be senior.

There is the highest rank and then there is the highest titled position in the US Army. Highest Rank goes to General of the Armies of the United States of America General George Washington (posthumously from 1976). General George Washington held the rank of full General and title position of Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army.

John J. Pershing was the only person in history to hold the rank of General of the Armies while serving on active duty. In 1919, to honor his service in World War I, Congress authorized the promotion of Pershing to the rank of "General of the Armies of the United States", President Woodrow Wilson, in accordance with Public Law 66-45, promoted Pershing to that same rank. The rank was primarily intended to recognize Pershing's performance as commander of the American Expeditionary Forces.

The the General Master Chief, CW9, awarded to my mother in 2014 by NDARNG TAG MG Alan "Spry". Backstory is during her retirement, 38 years AGR, Fort Knox typo-ed her CW4 rank and put in CW9. The TAG ran with it and made it happen. She was "promoted" during her retirement ceremony.

Years ago my father was trying to get a curtailment of his assignment in The Philippines to return stateside because of his new born daughter. His command denied the request. While playing Pinochle one evening, he told of his plight to the players at the table. A buck sergeant at the table told him to request again with right of review if denied. His request went up the chain to the Thirteenth Air Force where that same buck sergeant stamped approved and got the John Hancock of the commander. So in my father's case the highest rank was a simple buck sergeant.

POTUS is the highest, as he is the Commander-iIn-Chief.

In strictly uniformed ranks, the highest permanent rank is O-8 (2-star). All 3 and 4-star ranks are "temporary" and just a badge of office.

That said, General Pershing held what would now be considered a 6-star rank, which by law and tradition would elevate George Washington to 7 stars, as Washington gets automatic posthumous promotions as the most senior officer in the military, in perpetuity.

5 stars, in a pentagon pattern, is highest. General of the Armies. There have only been a few. Pershing was the only 1 in WWI. Eisenhower, MacArthur, and Marshall were the three in WWII and Nimitz and Halsey were 5 star, Admiral of the Navies, in WW II I think.

Most important important rank in the Marine Corps is the Company Gunny. He separates you from staff level bullshit, he protects you from stupid Butter Bars and ambitions 1st LTs. He’s your first real level of discipline and where most bs starts or stops. Most SgtMaj are too busy with paperwork and such, so he’s really the field leader in any unit I’ve been in. You’d have to do something really really stupid or illegal to fall outside of his power to help or punish. At least back in the day, heaven knows what’s up now, hell guys fall out of runs, fail PT tests, go unk on the range. You’d never get out of PI st that rate.

It is awarded to a single leader, the last 5 Star was General Omar Bradley he held the rank (retired if course) until his death in 1981.
