Problems are solved by decisions.
Asses the situation as best you can with the information at hand, and then make a decision. If it turns out to not work, reassess and make another decision. But until the leader makes a decsion, not much happens to solve the problem. So don't procrastinate when the situation calls for a decison.

Always remember your first day on the job. Learn from Senior Enlisted and make a decision, hesitation will get your people hurt or killed. On a lesser severity, make that decision, if incorrect then learn but the old saying about two ears and one mouth applies to everyone.

AK-TGT -- Always Know The Ground Truth.

Too often, and especially true in today's military, the disconnect and divide between command and warfighters on the ground is significant and wide. As a result distortion continues to exist as a major factor in decision making. Essentially there are two 'truths' where one is right and the other is perceived. The real truth flows to the top from ground level as clear and crisp as it is given by the warfighter. In order to effectively move forward with efficiency and long term sustainability we must seek to understand reality versus perceived reality. The perceived reality often materializes around the middle echelon and is easily mistaken for the de facto reality when in fact it is far from it. This happens for a variety of reasons, but real leaders know when the reality is being muffled and constrained by political correctness, egotistical careerist, and this-is-the-way-we've-done-it-in-the-past managers.

To be a visionary military leader in a hyper-globalized and technology fueled world requires thorough 360* thought leadership, the ability to effectively mitigate risk while maintaining mission focus, and accountability to those who look to us for guidance. We must be accountable and responsible any and all who are entrusted in our care. The shareholders -- military and civilian leaders, the men and women within our command and the American public require a different and unique pull of our time, and occasionally at the same time. Being the superior leader needed by our shareholders in the modern military is very tough and convoluted but will shape you to tackle any problems you may face. Even through it all, we should always remember to seek and know the ground truth. Once a leader understands this and is able to effectively put the pieces into play, our teams will conquer the world!

Responsible - Be responsible for your actions, the actions of those who work for you and be responsible for making sure those who work for you succeed.

Acknowledge - Acknowledge that you have limitations and your subordinates have limitations. Acknowledge their accomplishments

Listen - Listen to advice given and your to your subordinates. Listen to those around you. not all advice is good but it can help you narrow the good choices. Actively listen to your subordinates as well on other matters, their success is your success.

Learn - Learn form your mistakes and the mistakes of other, just like you would learn from your success and the success of others. Don't close your mind to learning new information, it might be the key to your success.

Engage - Engage with your subordinates to encourage the free flow of ideas and information, understand their needs and bring them aboard to your ideas.

There is an old saying that it is lonely at the top, but it is only so if command is all about you. If you bring the team (all of your advising subordinates) with you it's not lonely and you have support to fall back upon when difficult decisions need to be made.

The best advise I can think of is "Know Why"
Why are my people doing what they are doing
Why do I want them to do it a differently/ the same.

If you know the Why, then you will understand the situation better and be more equipped to explain what is needed to achieve the objective. (the correct answer is not "Because that's what the book says" know why the book says that)
