What is the best Army officer branch to commission into?

I am in ArmyROTC with a major in Economics and minor in Information Technology. I was wondering what branch would be the most beneficial for the civilian job market. I am extremely interested in a business or IT career after the Army. My favorite branches right now are Finance, Signal Corps, or any Logistics Branch.
I know your given branch is based off the needs of the Army but out of these branches which would open the most doors for me after leaving?
Any input from you guys would be appreciated!

It all depends on what you want to do on the civilian side once your military career is over. All of those branches will provide you with valuable skills and great job opportunity in the private sector.

I would look at the Medical Sevice Corps. In the beginning you are a “jack of all trades” which allows you to sample the different career fields you are looking at. I started off as a 70B but in my 7th year of commissioned service designated as a 70K Medical Logistics. My education is in business. We have nine areas of concentration, but they all support the medical field (hospital) we have 70C- Comptroller (CFO) and 70D - Health Services Informatics (information Management and IT) as well as Logistics in the 70K AOC - Health Services Materiel Officer. Look them up and you may be surprised about how diverse of a corps we are. Good luck.

Your question is very complex, for many reasons. If youre going on açtive, to my mind, the very last thing you should be thinking about candidly, is whatyoud do after you'd get out. I don't deny the relevance of that whole topic, however, if you're going on active, your focus should be in hat, and only hat, believe me, you're gonna have more than enough to worry about just doing what's expected of you on active, without thinking about some civilian career afterward, trust me on that. When I went in, I was to have gone Army ROTC, I went USAF OTS after that instead. I'd wanted the clinical side, it never happened, I wound up somehwrre I'd never expected, doingnwork I'd been trained to do, that was really important stuff, for really important people, I had to learn, often the hard way, to focus in that, and only that, what I wanted didn't matter, didn't count, at all, period, I was told quite bluntly to basically shut up and work. I wasn't allowed to go for any technical training to properly orient me to the hardware I was exposed to, it was straight OJT, period, the end. So, while I don't deny you likely have some choice depending on your interests and GPA, where you're sent, is where you're sent, period, the end. Also, from day one, you're gonna be expected to get a masters, minimum, part time, so acclimate yourself to that thought right now, and just get used to the idea. He same is true of any PME coursework you'd have to do, all svcs are REAL serious about a !asters and PME for new company graders, I mean REAL!serious, trust me, been there, done that (BTDT). Doctoral, that can be later, but masters and PME? Slam dunk no brained, the end, trust me, I don't care which svc you're in, yore gonna find it to be so, I assure you. That being said, to answer you properly, and really thoroughly would take a good deal more info, specific scout deworm you've dine in IT and economics, actual course titles, and your GPA, OK?mhabe you taken the GMAT at all? What year are you? Would tiu want to try to get a masters straight out of undergrad, assuming you GPA would let you compete seriously? OK, next, what would you want for grad school on a !asters? MBA? Management? Engineering management? Law? CPA? Law and CPA dovetail quite well, so that'd be well worth considering. Another possibility often neglected is operations research, I'll send you some stuff on that as well. How much comp sci (CS) have you had, aside from IT? Math? Physics? Other STEM coursework? The more specific you are, the more can be suggested, OK? Pet me send the other stuff I think your find useful asmwel now, OK?

Medical service .. I am biased.

You can either do IT or finance. Once you make captain there is a lot of opportunities such as being a medical comptroller or a health information management. Why is this important? Once you track this you would be working at an enterprise level positions which means a higher job entry into the medical field in either finance or IT.

The real skills that are going to sell you to civilians are ASIs and functional areas though, and those are senior Captain opportunities.

My advice - treat your junior officer time as an adventure, and pick something that's going to be fun - you're only going to be in your 20s and able to do crazy shit with your body for a few years. Wait until you're a Captain to grow up, then find yourself niche job in a functional area that will really give you skills to transition.

My advice: Get comfortable with picking a solid top 5 branches. Unless you anticipate getting in the top 10% of cadets for your year group, the likelihood of getting your number one, unless things align or you choose a less competitive branch, may be unrealistic. It just depends. Prefrences are just that, prefrences. If you pick a solid top five that you could see yourself comfortably working with, you should be alright.

Just don’t get too hung up on one thing because what you have in mind and what the Army may have in mind could be very different.

I received my 2nd branch preference and my 1st post preference.

Logistics in my opinion. You would have to branch Transportation, Quartermaster, or ordinance first. Once you complete the Career course, your branch would be logistics.

I graduated from college with a Marketing degree, I asked and received Armor for my branch. There will be plenty of time for service work that will translate into the civilian world, but you join the Army for a reason, to defend the nation. Do that with gusto while you are young and experience the best job you'll ever have. When the time comes, try to grab a Procurement secondary, specialty 92 (at least in my day). You will get experience in Contract/Subcontract management that translate smoothly into civilian work and the time in combat arms brings along a mission focus attitude that is appreciated by companies.

Logistics, MSC, or Cyber! If you are a business management & IT type these are the best. If you are more on the operational and process sides go to what all companies have to have in logistics. If you want to specialize in hospital management go MSC. Learn the military enterprise systems or health management system. If you are more on the IT side you will learn the security side and platforms inside and out in Cyber.

Lots of call for finance people especially if you already have an interest. I suggest if you do that you take some accounting classes and if you like it aim for your CPA as a possibility. If you have an interest in logistics, check out Lean Six Sigma as that seems to be the current direction.

Based on what you have an interest in I would say any Logistics branch. With most branches the pyramid gets smaller as you go up. With Logistics when the 3 branches combine and become Logistics it flips and opens up more positions. Just my thoughts.

As someone that got out as an E4 and then got a Comouter Science degree if you are trying to enter tech I would strongly recommend you look into the 17A mos. it’s extremly competitive and they are major specific. I believe IT might get you in the door, but I know they prefer EE and CS majors. It’s a tough interview process, but you’ll be doing cyber security with the NSA and other government organizations in DC. If you don’t know how to code I would also recommend you pick it up if you are looking for the higher paying tech careers.

Everything now touches Cyber. I think logistics is the most versatile. If I did it all over I would look at Intelligence closer. After a few years you can move to a functional area given the needs of the Army. You can potentially transfer branches as well. Branch details also provide great experiences. It’s a tough decision. If you want a job with civilian potential, intell or signal is your best bet, but if you want a career in the military and possibilities for promotion, choose any of the combat MOS's, special forces if you can make it in.

Go get branch experience where you think you could enjoy it and do well, then go Contracting or Acquisition Corps after you become a Captain. Agree with COL Halvarson, Cyber is very promising. If you want to stay in service and reach higher rank in the Army, then consider Infantry or Field Artillery. To be competitive in Infantry you will need to be Airborne and Ranger qualified. If you go light infantry you'll also need to be Jumpmaster qualified. I like Military Intelligence, which was my branch, and it has some promising post-service opportunities that would work with your economics degree. CIA is very interested in people with economics and business acumen. Logistics is very important and has some great opportunities after service as well, in shipping and inventory management (Wal-Mart, Amazon, etc.)

Sam M My recommendation to you is pick a career filed you enjoy and one that's in high demand right now. You'll get the training and experience you'll need to either stay in the Army or make the transition into a civilian career. You will have a leg up on a lot of the competition out there going after the same jobs you would be.

finance is good as long as you stay clear of darkside finance. granted it was nice working with officers and contractors ect... and i defiantly got to see the world. however, the finance points for promotions are always extremely high... and priority slots are shit. so finance, it can be good, it can be bad, and getting promoted can be on the slower end. however each corp has its own quirks.

more importantly... officers are not usually regimented directly to a corp like with enlisted tracking mos's. as you do stateside instructional, the overseas command... and the slots that become available to an officer isnt necessarily the same upon each rotations. so tho you might have your personal preferences... its not really up to you as an officer on your first few rotations. where after hitting captain major ect... then you can start getting delegated to a specific core command. so that is one of those things, i wouldn't be overly consigned about if my interests were toward becoming a commissioned officer.

Having spoken to Finance officers on a regular basis, I'll insert my two cents.

It's a far cry from a civilian Finance education. An Accounting degree would be a closer match. As a Finance officer, you'll be managing the transactions done by lower enlisted, ensure all funds are accounted for, ext.

There are several branch options from which you can choose that lead to fine civilian careers, and also includes serving in the combat arms. I much enjoyed my time in the field in the armor branch within with which I gained a specialty (SSI) in operations research systems analysis. My experience and education (Ph.D.) proved applicable in the civilian sector.
