Thinking about going there for my next assignment, how is for a family out there?

I left there over a decade ago.  I had a blast and it's great for families.  My second daughter was actually born there.  Couldn't tell you which Infantry battalion is "best".  I don't think there's nearly as many Infantry units there as there used to be.  My one bit of advice is to live off post.  A lot of families who're quartered on post don't get out much.  They're often a miserable bunch who can't wait for their DEROS because they suffer from a self-imposed on-post cabin fever.  We lived in an off post government apartment.  As a result, we spent much more time on the economy and enjoyed the day-to-day life of living in Europe.  Best of luck.

I agree. Do not become a barracks rat or base housing rat. Get out and explore. I was there 34 years ago and I made sure I went somewhere every weekend. I had a German map on a dart board and I would throw the dart and choose where I would go each weekend. Take the train.
