What is the best unit you ever ever served in?

I been in a few and each have had some good takeaways, some more than others. I think its good to serve in various units as it expands a Soldiers understanding of “the big picture,” making then a better asset to the Army. Overall, JSOC was the best organization I ever worked with, what about you?

C 3-22 FA, Basic Combat Training | Fort Sill, OK

Recruit: Conducted Basic Combat Training- getting a kick in the whole rear end.
A CIVILAN becomes a SOLDIER. Who knew 25 years and 3 days later, I would go to 6 combat deployments, serve in some of the finest units the United States Army could bestow on a Soldier. Most Ironically, Becoming a DRILL SERGEANT IN DECEMBER 2005 and serving at Sandhill, Fort Benning GA; with C/2-47 IN "Charlie Rock, Panther Battalion". I owe it all to my Drill Sergeants and a lot more gratitude. Thanks for training me to fight, win and survive and what the word BATTLE BUDDY MEANS. Yea, didn't know then, but boyee did they watch my 6 and cover me while I moved (the U.S. Soldier).

1. The best TO&E unit I served with was 1st Battalion, 52nd Infantry Regiment in Bamberg, Germany [1981-1984]
2. The best TDA unit I served with was USCAA which at the type supported the Army Staff [1989-1992] on classified studies, etc.

For me I would have to separate the best based on categories of Commands. I joined in 1966 and retired in 1990. That is 23+ years of service. My best Sea command as an Enlisted would have to be the USS Enterprise CVN-65. A ship on which I made Chief Petty Officer (E-7) in 1979. Making CPO is a huge deal in the Navy. I also had a fairly large Division, all were standouts in various work centers, and to this day I stay in touch with many of them.

By far, my best command at Shore duty as an enlisted would be 4 years in Hawaii in the mid 70's at the Naval Communications Area Master Station East Pacific (NAVCAMSEASTPAC) at Wahiawa Hawaii. I was maintenance Chief of the Massive 40 foot and 60 foot SHF parabolic Satellite terminals which were part of the world wide Defense Satellite Communications System (DSCS). How could 4years in Hawaii not be memorable?

I now move to my best command as a commissioned Officer at sea, and that will easily be as the ships Combat Systems Test Officer (STO) in the USS Bainbridge CGN-25 (1984-1987). What an impressive crew manned that Nuke cruiser. The skipper was Capt J. Paul Reason, who many may know later in his career as a 4 star Admiral. I earned my Surface Warfare Officer Pin under his command. I served almost 4 years on that ship! He was without a doubt my most impressive mentor.

The last best command would be as a commissioned officer on Shore duty. That would be the command at which I retired. That would be as the Combat Systems Department head at the Aegis Combat Systems Engineering and development Site (CSEDS) in Moorestown, New Jersey. I had a excellent crew of technicians that covered the entire ratings structure that makes up the Aegis combat systems Department of an Aegis Cruiser. I retired from the Navy at this command after 23 years of service.

All units I was assigned to were a little different from the other. But, if I could name one unit that set apart from the other is 55th Signal Company (Combat Camera). This unit took me around the world several times and got to witness many things through the lens of the camera...some good, some not that good. It made me realized how fortunate I was/am. I did enjoy my time in the SF community, but COMCAM will always have a place in my heart.

Different units for different reasons. I was the tenth person assigned to the Asymmetric Warfare Group and am one of the people that built that unit from scratch. With our original mission, and the high caliber of people selected for the unit, it was certainly the most professional and tactically capable. But I was also the Deputy Commandant of an NCO Academy and my Soldiers there were very good and capable. I ran a NATO CI organization that was pretty high speed but we had a lot of duds at our higher headquarters that made getting missions completed more than a little difficult.

3/47th of the 9th Infantry Division. Battalion CO was LTC Ishmael Pack an incredibly brilliant commander. And he was fortunate to have outstanding company leadership - officers and NCOs. I was proud to have served with this man, and he gave me an opportunity to work for him again as a PI at the Infantry School at Benning when I returned from Vietnam. We kicked some serious butt under him in the Delta 68-69.

I have great memories of my first year and a half in Germany B 1/40th FA, 3rd Armored Division. We were the 3rd Armored Salute Battery with the honorary Pak 75 Howitzers - but there were changes in command and the overall Army in 76 and things seemed to go downhill from there - it's a sad thing to see an excellent unit go downhill.

I think the best unit I served in all around was the 1/320th FA 82nd Abn Division - even our "duds" would have made pretty good troops in other units I'd served in; my best assignment was XVIII Abn Corps G-3/EPG where I was detached for my last year in as I waited my MRB. The work was fascinating, seeing things from the top and I will be forever grateful I was able to finish my career (that ended too soon for me) doing something meaningful.

Hands down, best unit was Military Intelligence Battalion Low Intensity. It no longer exists but when it did we we were based primarily out of Orlando Florida and had many operational platforms and operational theaters and several facilities world wide. We were the first unit to ever test and field the Predator UAVs and had quite a few other air intel assets. The mission/s were all live, real time and the most interesting and fun work I did in my thirteen years in the Intelligence Corps.

CPT Private RallyPoint Member it’s a toss between HHC ASL at White Sands Missile Range where we supported all the missile and artillery firings, as well as being the backup support for Spaceshuttle Missions; every day had a different challenge and also met a lot of VIP’s there. The other one was at MCT Waegwan, 25th Trans in South Korea, which missions were far different than in any other unit I’ve served in and I learned a lot there as well. Only had one really bad unit in my entire career, that nearly had me thinking of leaving the military and I’m glad I stayed with it. Each unit I’ve served in I was able to learn new things and provided a bigger understanding of how they all work together.

16th Engineer Battalion 1992-1994 (I was also impressed with 65th Engineer Bn 1997-2000, but 16th Engineer was extraordinarily squared-away. Even (or especially?) in hindsight, they were, at that time, as professional and no-nonsense as you could conceivably get. The Army should have done a study on it - I mean, it was SQUARED-AWAY.

The busiest was 2d FSSG (now CLG-2). They were officially the most tasked unit in USMC while I was there. If one stayed around it was not a question of if, but when you were going to deploy. Everything from one of the 3 MEUs, standing operations, or supporting arty shoots at Ft. Bragg. Best unit was 2 floats with MSSG-24 (24 MEU SOC) 92-94. Best op was OIC II MEF FWD for Baltic Challenge 97 in Norway and Estonia. They were all good. Every day's a holiday, every meal a feast.

The Joint Communications Support Element (JCSE). I was in the JCSE 1987-1992. What makes this unit so unique? This communications unit (brigade sized) has all four branches of the US Military: Army Air Force, Navy, and Marines. The mix of the different branches are evidences all the way down into the team level. For a communications-electronics person, this is THE Premiere Military Unit. It is based at MacDill AFB in Florida. This unit supports each of the Unified Commands, worldide. There is none fine! I spent twenty years in the Army, serving everywhere from Korea to Germany and all between. The JCSE was my pinnacle. I thank God for allowing me to serve there.

We would have gone through hell with Tsgt Slaughter knowing he would get us through to the other side. He was fair, demanding of excellence and in my humble opinion, the embodiment of what is desired in a NonCom.

Of the many assignments that i had it was the special people which I remember more than the overall unit. People like SSgt Early (basic Training), SSgt Dick Sargent (656th Radar Sq), SSgt Lane (710th AC&W sq), Col Hesse (96th CES), Maj McCleland (Brooks AFB), Col Birmingham (7240 Com Sq). It's the people who we remember from the good assignments.

I began serving in the 82nd to the 2/325. Unfortunately they never trained. Each year maybe 1-2 weeks all year. Then reassigned to 2/504, 82nd Airborne Division and what a difference. Eleven months every year training or being sent on assignment for hyjackings during the 1970’. Anyone else remember that was terrorism of the day

Can't narrow it to just one. Each unit I was in allowed me to grow as a Soldier and as a person, and I was able to get an education(military and civilian) through every unit I was in

I cannot say definitely, I was in The A co, 27th Engr, It was great, then B co 27th Engr Bn. Moved to Alaska, HHC 1st Bde another great experience. 1/501st Airborne Inf. was activated I moved to it. Another great unit. I became 1SG of 98th Maint, I really enjoyed this experience. What I am trying to say each unit was great, There were a few dirt-bags in each, I tried not to be that dirt-bag. I feel that the experience is what you make of it. Focus on your lane, as if on the range. And do not get a superiority complex. The Army is like soup. Your experience will be a combined total of what you put into it. I loved the Army and I never had a bad unit or a bad team.

I served in many units while in the Infantry. I enjoyed them all. I served in only one in a combat status, C-2-14th Inf, 25th ID. There is a difference in units in the situations you serve with them. I can only say that it is a wonderful experience to serve with men from all works of life. But when one of them receives the MOH you are extremely humbled. You never forget those soldiers, the fun times and your youthful actions, on duty and off duty. My recommendation is to be friends with them all.

after spending 6 years in the USAF I Served on COMSEVENTHFLT STAFF Embarked on USS OKLAHOMA CITY CG-5. The staff and ship's co treated me with respect and dignity. left there as a RM3 on my way to RM C-7 And Morse code school and on to USNA PASSUMPSIC-T-AO-107 Homeport subic bay PI Where I got married 7 months later.
