Do your research and ask three relevant questions about the company, any changes that are being advertised, the position and why it's open, or other questions that show you've done your research on the position and industry.

If I feel good about the interview and the people I am going to work with and after I've asked a bunch of questions. They ask, "Have you got anymore questions?"

Then I say, "Last question, when do I start?"

Has never failed.

If you want the job, review what you understand to be the next steps. Then ask them for their number if you have more questions. If they give the number, find a good question for a follow-up call. This will keep front of mind with interviewer. If you don't get the job, they may want to refer you.

I tell people to end their interview with a call for action. For example, do not be reactive and say you will wait for their call back. Rather say something about looking forward to continuing the conversation in a day or two. It also helps to get their email address and follow up the interview with an email thanking them again for their time, answering a question you might have missed during the interview and again ending with a call to action. It's best to be proactive than reactive.

The job I have now, during my interview I was told that there was also another person in contention for the same position. At the end of the interview, the person across the desk asked me if there was anything else I would like to add before the interview was over....I said "Break it nicely to the other guy that I was picked and not him."

I ask "What are the next steps?" to be clear what follows by me, the employer or both of us. From home I send an e-mail as a thank for the interview opportunity. I follow with a thank you card.
