Coming from a prior serving NCO I am asking this from an NCOs perspective. This goes for junior enlisted and brand new LTs. What ways can you go about pushing them to be the leaders, noncoms and officers, that they will need to be if they stick with the military?

Like SFC Stephens said, let them lead. There is nothing better than being in a position and letting them learn from both good and bad. Ensure they learn from their mistakes and are not crucified for them. Also, they need the mentorship on what they are doing good and what they need to improve on. There are some books that I think are good for people to lead but to me, sitting in the driver's seat is the best way to make Soldiers become better leaders.

Teach them to focus on getting their subordinates squared - skills, resources, etc - away and then apply the concept.
