It is my understanding there is not a good way to study history but I am wondering about the other subjects. Also about what common knowledge things are candidates expected to know?

Buy a ranger handbook. Read it front to back and you will be the high speed OC that everyone looks up to. Read FM 6-22 and FM 6-0 front to back. OCS teaches leadership through the proficiency of infantry tactics. Read it over and over until you can remember even when a TAC Officer is yelling at you after you have had no sleep, you are so stressed, are not sure what day it is.

No bad advice, especially if you aren't coming from a Combat Arms background. Assuming things haven't changed completely, the academic classes (remember that you have to pass that side of things too) always give us a Syllabus that outlined the class, listed the required reading and a series of example test questions. Read the required sections and be able answer the examples and you will be way ahead.

I don't know about the need to study prior to attending OCS. In 1968 while completing Signal AIT at Ft. Gordon the Army approached me about attending Signal OCS. I completed all the requirements, tests, PT, etc. and my package was accepted. On the bus late at night when we were going to be transported across post to Signal OCS we were presented with some rather grim news and an alternative choice to make. An E-7 from OCS came aboard the bus to break the bad news to us. The Signal OCS was no longer taking new Candidates, however, Infantry OCS had accepted all of us and we would be making arrangements to transport to Ft. Benning. He further told us that once we were commissioned in Infantry we would be able to make a branch transfer to Signal. I was totally devastated, disappointed, angry and fearful. I could not make up my find but fortunately, we were allowed a small amount of time to think it over and choose our own fate. After calling my Dad out in California and also talking with the other guys on the bus my mind was made up. Leave me here at Ft. Gordon and I will take whatever next duty assignment the Army thought I would best fit the needs of the Army. That was the end of my OCS days. Now, 50 years later, I am still supremely disappointed that I got off that bus. Not an answer to your question but a story I tell over and over. This something I will never forget.
