I suppose a lot of things are facepalm moments. I hate when they portray a senior officer as a nut case sounding like a drill instructor.

Uniforms issues can be annoying if they are way off target. This season of "Better Call Saul" they had a goof. The second to last episode they had an AF Captain in his blues wearing Army Pilot wings. Although I do know a major who flew in the Army in previous life and only has Army wings.

I worked on set doing a little advising. Its actually really hard to get the costumer to get it right even after you explain it to them over and over.

For me, it's the ones that really cause me to break my suspension of disbelief. In something campy, like the above still from Hogan's Heroes, I can forgive the German guard with the Tommy Gun because 1) it's campy comedy anyway and 2) there were problems getting MP-40s for the lower budget TV series back then. Rat Patrol had the same problem. But then Rat Patrol had bigger problems, starting with the whole concept was based on what the Brits were doing. That and the Aussie hat on the American character... One could spend a lot of time on that show...

Weapons of the wrong era... Those are a problem for me. A Forward Assist in 1964, for instance. But then I am pleasantly surprised when movies get it right. The M-16s in We Were Soldiers, for instance. Disclaimer: I did not slow motion or frame by frame the movie to make sure every single rifle was an M-16 and not an M-16A1, but the distinct 3-bladed barrel and lack of forward assist in the vast majority of shots was reassuring.

Location gaffs are another of my pet peeves. In one episode of The Unit, for instance, they state that the action is taking place at the Pine Bluff Arsenal and the nearby Pine Bluff Airport... The scene is clearly shot in an arid location (somewhere in California, I'm pretty sure), but Grider Field in Pine Bluff, Arkansas is on the edge of a cotton field!!! Yes, I know the show, like so many, is full of inconsistencies and military errors, but that one broke the wall for me as I've passed by both locations 100 times or more in my life.

Let me flip this: what military movie/TV Show do you think got it particularly right?

The B list movies on SCIFI channel. All military units will always have one hot women on the team and the leader of said team will have a beard or something like that to make him more leader like. Then there's the HQ in the movies lights everywhere and some E4 is the NCOIC of the whole thing will the commanding officer yells at everyone because he's in charge.

Then there is the robot soldiers going around killing civilians because the leadership told them to and of course dumb non-thinking soldiers just to anything their told to include killing American civilians just because.

In one of those horribly bad Iron Eagle movies in the '80's, they did a few thousand things wrong, but two really got me. I was Scheduler for about a year, and changing a bomb load is a not as easy as just punching some keys on a keyboard, and it's sure as hell not gonna happen in the next 15 minutes unless we're at war. The really big one was launching a missile while on the runway...has no one in Hollyweird ever heard of a "Weight On Wheels" switch? It's kind of an important safety feature, so WE CAN'T LAUNCH WEAPONS WHILE ON THE GROUND!!!!

Don't even get me started about when the Karate Kid was flying a single seat F-16 and put his Dad in behind him!

Gunfighting. If this is to be the central trope of your movie, how can you dare to get it so wrong?

#1 Shooting accurately is really hard. If you're outside of 25 feet with a pistol you're better off seeking cover or running. Rifles aren't magic either. You will miss a lot, so will the other guy. The principal point of the gunfight is to shoot the other guy, the secondary is to not be shot. This means stability in shooting position, clear sight alignment and picture are critical, anything else is wasted ammo. Cover matters and you can't dodge bullets. Teamwork is critical.
#2 Death has meaning, to both sides of a conflict. Real meaning.
#3 Clicking off safe is not racking a round, different sounds by far.
#4 Racking a round to show how serious you are when you just cleared an area or are in a threat area or something of the like. Either A. You're an idiot for clearing with a weapon in condition 3 or B. a round should have flown from the chamber and you're an idiot for wasting the extra round.
#5 Cocking a double-action pistol to show how serious you are is not the same as racking a weapon, different sounds, also a fairly meaningless action unless you need a lighter trigger squeeze.
#6 Not all pistols are double action pistols.
#7 Reloads. Dear goodness the reloads.
#8 Pistols are backup weapons or (very) close-work weapons, any real fighter knows this.
#9 It's not hard to find someone who knows all of the above, and yet no one seems willing to put the money into it or follow it consistently.

#10 Good gunfight movies? Black Hawk Down, Band of Brothers, most of End of Watch, Act of Valor (maybe the best not great acting, but the beauty and truth in those reloads cannot be denied.)

The worst one I can remember was in the movie "Iron Eagles" with Lou Gossett Jr. He steals a Priority "A" (at the time)/Protection Level 1 aircraft by intimidating an Air Force Security Specialist (Security Police/Forces) into letting him and a civilian access to the aircraft. In real life, he would have been put on the ground and then cuffed. Arguing would have only gotten him "butt stroked" with the stock of the M-16.

Another one is Security Force Members coming in and taking over for NASA engineers in "Armageddon". I guess I missed the training on that one.

hmmm... there's sooo many, but one that particularly stands out is from one of the Rambo movies - Stallone is in the cockpit of a helicopter, pulls out a LAW and fires it thru the glass to take out a Russian helicopter. The ONLY good part about that scene was seeing the movies with several ROTC classmates, and in unison we shouted, "back blast area was NOT clear!!" then roaring laughter... Can't say the rest of the audience appreciated our humor though... oh well...

Battleship. So after their ship get sunk by aliens, they get on the USS Missouri, a museum ship, somehow get it started up and underway, and oh by the way the guns are still operational and there is live 16 in shells on board. Not to mention being fueled up ready to roll after being in mothballs for decades. Guess you never know when you will need to take your floating museum for a spin and shoot the big guns at some aliens.

A few acquaintances of mine are military advisors for Hollywood and helped shed some light on this subject. The advisors can tell the film-maker how to make everything 100% accurate, but ultimately it is up to the film-maker to make the movie how they think it will best entertain the plebes. There are creative decisions made to portray their vision and what they believe will be most easily understood, such as the villain in "American Sniper" wearing all black and a leather jacket during summer in Ramadi (Holy Heat Casualty Batman) or uniform discrepancies. This holds true for jacked-up tactics, the gratuitous explosions, never-ending magazines, excessive weapon sounds, etc. It's all to play to the entertainment of simple minds, not veterans.
On the subject of uniforms, most of the time it is based on someone in the costume department throwing something together that looks right or visually appealing. With the exception of "Basic" (which in my opinion is the worst military movie ever conceived), in general most costume designers have tried much harder to be more accurate with medals, patches and badges, largely from input from veterans and advisors.
As I said before, the advisors are there to advise, it is up to the film-maker as to how he or she utilizes it in their end product.

one part that is probably unintentionally correct was WWII Germans driving US trucks, most German trucks in WWII were taken from other forces - the Germans used more horses than anybody else, a third of Hitler's truck were Fordwerke,(and Henry Ford made profit off of all of them)and another third were Opels (GM of Germany) you don't need to fly the Stars and Stripes on your Dodge truck, because a Dodge Truck is the Stars and Stripes, a German soldier would give up on his comrades before he gaveup his Dodge truck.

Or a junior officer/enlisted berates a General because screw plans, regs and orders, I did it my way. But my favorite is when hodgepodge of personnel get cleared to carry out ops that will shape the nation or save the world and the guy standing in that miracle COC giving orders is...a Major.

When Rambo plays possum then suddenly takes out the Russian officer's Hind Helicopter he uses an M72A2 light anti-tank weapon (LAW). When fired, the M72A2 has a back blast that can kill out to 100 feet, which means he would have either blown up his own helicopter or killed all the MIA's he had rescued..

The Great Escape. Yes, it's OLD, so am I, BUT, I had the privilege of walking and talking with the man, himself, General Clark, whom Steve McQueen supposedly portrayed. The REAL story is far better, and by now, surely is or can be declassified enough to remake this film--and do it JUSTICE! Gen. Clark died about 5 or so years back, but, remained an active presence at the USAF, where ALL the photos, scrapbooks, documents, and "spy" vs. spy "stuff" is, that helped them escape. ALL this man was able to accumulate, and still smuggle this out, along with his men! An INCREDIBLE story, if only it could be told correctly, and honor ALL involved--CIVILIANS are ALWAYS forgotten, especially on Memorial Day! However, THIS alone, would shed light on so much--too bad not during this wonderful man's lifetime, but, he never needed to BE acknowledged. He was content with his service, achievements, and we'd ride the "tuna boat trolley" together as he reminisced! (That alone I'm still not positive what he was talking about! But HE knew-- leaving me with the sly smile, wink and slight nod from that still red-headed, tall, erect, gentleman's always calm face--yet always an undercurrent of earned authority, that only HE was privileged to relive each telling. As it should be. ONLY Ron Howard, or one of his ilk, SHOULD be ALLOWED even to be considered to take on the making of this period of our world's history. IF the real story is even allowed to get as far as a treatment, much less progress to a final work. If there are even a few who can confirm and fill in the blanks, regardless...it is a much more fascinating tale of what USED to be the human condition. Maybe, just maybe, this could ignite the fuse of humanity and blow us BACK to where we should be...instead of the pitiful telling of "Hurt Locker," "Brokeback Mountain," "American Sniper," and all the other garbage that continues to be green lighted and shoved down all of our throats, that are so full of .223 and .204 holes WE continue to count the shots, scream at screens, and tear the place apart demanding at least ONE technical advisor gets SOMETHING right, much less who WROTE

My favorites are:

1. Stunning accuracy and range. Everyone is able to hit things at insane ranges using weapons like a submachine gun. And everyone is one-shot-one-kill. Damage is also different. When I shoot my opponent with my 9mm, he flies back and disintegrates as if he's been hit with a 155mm. When I get shot with by the enemy, its a graze as if I've been hit with a 22. Also, when my weapon is empty, I will pull out my out-of-regulation K-Bar knife and throw it with sniper accuracy, killing three opponents.

2. Civilians come back in to save the day. "So and so is no longer in but he was one of my top guys so I'm bringing him back in the military to help us out. I'm also allowing him to have completely civilian dress codes, wear what he wants and modify his weapons (Chuck Norris - Delta Force). Also, when we're done with our mission, he goes back to being a civilian." Did Norris get permission from his civilian job to take time off? No? Ooops. Also hilarious that Norris (and hobo pilot from Independence Day) have been out of the military but are still "up" on current military tech and how to use it. Chuck switches channels on his radio as if he uses it as a civilian every day. And hobo pilot knows all the frequencies, etc.

3. No collateral damage. A grenade goes off six inches away from me and does nothing but kill ten bad guys. It doesn't short my equipment out, wound me or anything.

4. Insane cross training. Everyone is an EOD expert and is able to disarm any bomb, drive an enemy tank and shoot enemy missiles and high tech weaponry. We also know the enemy's "short cuts" and hidden panels, etc. So when we're driving our enemy tank and it stalls, we know to open the panel near our knee and pull the green wire and tie it to the black wire.

5. Any female at "base", the "clinic", "supply" or "headquarters" is wearing a 100% custom made uniform that shows off her insanely perfect dimensions and as luck would have it, she's never married or taken and falls head over heels in love with me. She also never has a job to do as she always has time to sit on my bed, lean against my plane, visit me at the front and "wish me well," "talk about that night at the club," etc. She also knows my best friend who died during that crazy battle and how he had no family, etc. Also, none of the single guys in my unit like her. None of the single patients in the hospital in the bed next to me like her as well.

6. Medicine that I take works instantaneously and I'm back in action in no time.

7. Enemy gear works with my gear. My ammo fits in an enemy gun, etc.

Honestly, it's uniform regulations. I never noticed it before the Marine Corps, but once I was in, that's all I can see. The worst example (I can't remember if it was a TV show or movie) was this Marine in his service Alphas... but he was incredibly heavyset. It looked like they would have needed 2-3 belts to circle that Alpha Coat.

The movie; "Fury" I so wanted this to be a good movie because my Dad was in M4 Shermans during the Korean War Era.
Early on a crew member is shot leaving lots of blood and gore all over the inside of the tank. OK that's believable. Towards the end only three people are left. One is the new guy who is told to save himself and to use the hatch on the bottom to escape through. The other two wounded men left in the tank have a couple german grenades dropped in on them. First, the two grenades go off at different times although within seconds of each other. WRONG! One grenade would have set off the other one as well. Secondly, the new guy re-enters the tank and cries over two whole but dead bodies of his crewmates. WRONG! The inside of that tank would've been a bloody, drippy gooey mess and there would've been no hugging going on unless it'd be him hugging himself as he threw up everything but his toenails.

I think just about every movie involving a military branch has major screw ups. From simple things like in Godzilla, an army LTC wearing his sleeves rolled like a marine to seeing a gun battle where no one ever reloads etc. Is it on purpose or are they too cheap to hire a former military advisor.

Had just returned from a tour with 5SFG in RVN when "The Green Berets" opened in town. Got invited to the opening. It would take a four page post to detail the errors in this disaster - Mattel M16 with a speaker in the stock, the sunset over the ocean, jumping a Chinook without static lines, the Gabriel demonstration....

How old all the people in the miltary are shown as, Who knew that the average private was in his thirties. The onldest man in the coast guard boat in the "Finest Hours " rescue was 23 and he was the OLD guy, in the movie no one looked under thirty. In "A Bridge to far " Gen. Gavin was played by a man 20 years older than he was and The same applies to his portrayal the "Longest. Day' A sixtyish John Wayne portraying an officer in his thirtieths in that movie was hilarious also.

I have two things that really tick me off: I love NCIS, but why do they always have to make the soldier's berets unformed and improperly fitting. I am really tired of the Army looking stupid on TV or movies. I don't care whether we like or hate the beret, it's a uniform and we are supposed it wear it well. The other is the ribbon / medal order (tons of websites to get things in order pretty easily) and protocol / salutes / etc.. The end of the credits always list the 'military adviser'. Where did they find this guy and how does he not know military bearing, military custom and courtesy, and everything else military. How can I get that job so I can make sure it is all done correctly?

I usually get rankled over unrealistic and technical flaws for the sake of poetic license. The scene in "Top Gun" when Maverick and Goose are cockpit to cockpit with the fictional MiG-28 reigns supreme. F-14's allow a classic merg with aggressive belligerent and more maneuverable fighter aircraft to take place. They get into a rolling scissors with an adversarial aircraft and find time to get too close and take a picture.

- Having US soldiers in WWI to Vietnam era uniforms with the corporal/ sergeants chevrons upside down. Mysteries at the museum just chaps my ass with this one. Can't concentrate on what otherwise would be a great show because the chevrons drive me bat shit. We aren't common wealth NCOs.
- Any movie that the Trooper pulls a grenade pin with their teeth. Friggin jaws from 007 couldn't do that, let alone a mere mortal (don't ask how I figured this one out).

What about military novels? I started one a couple of weeks ago and the author must have made up the book as he went along. Totally silent machine guns, skids on an MH60 helo. Of course the SEAL team members had oode names like Psycho and Madman. I had to stop after the first chapter.

I hate to knock Tom Clancy, but his view on the enlisted man was terrible. He would put senior enlisted in positons filled by junior petty officers or non-rates. In one of his books he had a 30 year Master Chief take the helm during a storm.

Crimson Tide. All of it. What ship in the fleet has those stupid blinky rotating lights, and for a ship that's supposed to spend it's service life making like a hole in the water, they sure did have a lot of loud alarms, klaxons, and unnecessary 1MC announcements.

Also, the sub wouldn't have lost propulsion like that. I can tell you why, but then I'd have to kill you.

Also, NCIS any time they try to do anything aboard ship. They just get it so very, very terribly wrong. Well actually, they get NCIS's job so very, very terribly wrong. Also, field offices in Los Angeles and New Orleans? Don't they mean Seal Beach and Pensacola?

To me, the MOST obvious and disrespectful is the "HAND SALUTE". The movie Directors and Producers take a lot of "Liberties" in movies taking advantage of the movie goers ignorance of Military Courtesy. Of course there are others but only a Veteran would be able to spot them.

When the salute is depicted as the highest act of respect a soldier can bestow on another, when it's really just the civilian equivalent of shaking hands. Oh and whenever weapons are leveled at someone, there's that mysterious clicking as if they're all being charged at the same time. But the list goes on and on and on...It makes you realize that other professions we only know through TV and movies are probably grossly distorted too.

As an aside, each branch has media detachments available to the media for advice and to coordinate use (rental) of military property. Some choose to use the service and some don't. I was a member of the RTU (unpaid reservists) supporting the Army's LA detachment. You should see some of the stuff that got sent in for review. One "grade C" movie we panned, after the release, used two first lieutenants bars next to each other for the rank of Captain. The errors were entertaining in themselves.

Pretty much every movie...with some notable exceptions (Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down) but even then...from how to salute to how to hold a weapon to people just walking away from explosions, overturned vehicles or getting 'knocked out' etc.. Who do they get to provide military expertise...COL Klink? It is the same with medical stuff. Been a nurse a very long time. I have never said "We loosing him!" Then again..Hollywood is entertainment..not reality.

RE the above photo from "Hogan's Heroes" (which I watched religiously every Friday night): I always laughed when the camera would catch a glimpse of the desert mountains and palm trees surrounding the location where they filmed each episode. Another thing - every episode was set in winter and there was always patches of fake snow lying around. The actors had to dress as if it were really winter time (heavy coats, gloves, mufflers etc.) even though you knew they were really sweating their asses off dressing that way in Southern California! :D

Where do I begin? LOL
Let's see... The inability to get uniforms put together correctly, whether it be rank insignia on the epaulets, insignia of units that have never left CONUS worn on the right shoulder, ribbons on the right side of the uniform, etc, etc... You'd think that the folks in costuming, at least, would have reference material on uniforms.

Of course, everything that explodes has to involve a huge fireball. (How come we never got the grenades that did that?)

Then, there's the guy with a pistol, firing from the passenger seat of an M151 while bouncing down a dirt road and picking off people a hundred yards away. And, of course, the impact of a pistol or rifle round knocks them through the air and back ten yards.

Saluting... Don't even get me started.

Same with hair cuts.

Of course we always seem to see the Generals who hang on every word from a civilian they've just met and are ready to cancel operations because the civilian doesn't think it's a good idea. Or they're ready to attack because the civilian told them to. Either that, or it's a General/Admiral who is ready to go rogue and launch an attack despite being told to wait for further information and orders. Part of the Hollywood problem there is a need to portray everything as black or white, with most of the shades of grey and finer nuances left out, and a complete absence of understanding of the command structure.

It's not just a Hollywood problem, though. Stage plays and performances can be even worse. A couple years ago, I watched a performance of Rossini's "Cenerentola". In the last scene, the prince came out in his dress uniform, set in the 1700s, and after looking at him for a moment, I realized he had the same medals I have.

Pretty much all the new submarine movies. If you want to know what life on a sub is like watch 2 movies. "Das But" and "Down Periscope". The first was written by a reporter who was actually on a submarine and the second puts the crazy side of submariners on display. And we actually had a person tie a frozen chicken to each shoulder and dress up like a pirate once. One he called Polly. Can't remember what the other was called but it was something stupid. lol

Here's 2 that always bug me.
Whenever there's a show/movie involving a carrier the CAG almost always seems to be conspicuously absent; his role in these movies/shows is always filled by the ship's Captain or a squadron CO who (conveniently) doesn't fly anything but a desk. Top Gun is blatantly guilty of this, I couldn't tell if the bald guy who chews out Maverick and Goose in the beginning is supposed to be the CAG (although he's only a Commander or Lt. Commander) or Maverick's squadron's CO. Then you have Behind Enemy Lines where the ship's Captain seems to be running air ops instead of the missing CAG.

The other thing that bugs me are convertible, and often doorless, Humvees. I don't know how many shows or movies where I've seen Humvees driving around without their doors on and often without roofs too. In my time in I never once saw a doorless, much less a doorless and topless, Humvee and my unit dealt with the soft top variants exclusively and so did every other unit I ever saw. Where do these convertible Humvees come from and where did the director/producer ever see one and thought that's how the military configures them?

Speaking of Humvees, that reminds of some B movie that I saw once where it had a crack unit made up of all former trouble makers/gang banger kids, in this movie they're on a mission somewhere getting shot at and their only means of escape was a Humvee. As if the basic premise wasn't ridiculous enough but in order to tie in to their past they have one of the kids make his way to the Humvee and proceed to hotwire it! I laughed so hard when I saw that, it was so obvious that neither the director or the screenwriter had ever been around a real military Humvee before since, as I'm sure most of you already know, there's absolutely no need to hotwire a Humvee, or just about any other military vehicle in order to steal it.

My favorite TV show in the military venue to hate was Mc Hales Navy! Granted it was supposed to be a comedy but the humor fairy must have been on an extended vacation while that series was running. The situations were rotten, the characters screwed up and the jokes were as flat as month old beer. I think that the only saving grace in the whole series was Tim Conway.

A. The sound effects when Apaches fire the cannon - hint, it does't sound like a mini-gun.
(Lone Survivor comes to mind but I know I have heard it other places as well).

the missing chain of command. how many times have you seen a major lead a squad consisting of a sergeant and 10 privates? no junior officer platoon leaders, no other senior or junior NCOs, no other squads or platoons. it's like every unit is based on some incorrect Special Forces A-team TO&E. Things I really resent seeing in the movies-----Soldiers who disobey their incompetent officers, sadistic sergeants, rapes, murders and other assorted war crimes. A main character who deserts because of crimes he participated in, or witnessed and did nothing about. The main character will become a drug addict or a drunk, and in the end commit suicide. Maybe the director will put in, what he considers an interesting twist, by having him murder his entire family,---mom--dad--baby sister---dog ---grandma in a wheelchair----before he---while sobbing hysterically----puts a pistol to his temple and blows out his own brains.-----AAAHHHHH Tinsel Town------the magic.

As a pilot, inaccuracies in flying scenes and machines drive me nuts. Movies that show the interior of one type of aircraft, such as a C-130, and then an exterior shot on a C-17, or jet noises for WWII prop planes. I recently watched a History Channel movie on the Normandy invasion during WWII. When they talked about the airdrops behind the beaches in France they showed footage of C-130s doing personnel drops. You'd think the History Channel could be more accurate. C-47s made most of the airdrops during the Normandy invasion and I'm pretty sure there's historical stock footage of C-47 airdrops. The C-130 wasn't brought into service for about another 10 years.

The other thing that bothers me is the seeming invincibility of US and Allied aircraft. In some movies the enemy aircraft shoot hundreds of rounds at US fighters, but never hit them. The US fighter gets 5 seconds of a good gun solution and smokes the enemy every time. That's pretty much pure fiction. The "bad guys" aren't always bad shots and the Americans aren't always super accurate.

I can deal with air-to-air or intergalactic combat scenes that show human, or at least organic, beings performing maneuvers that would generate forces that would kill most people. After all it's science fiction. It doesn't portend to be real, so a little unreal maneuvering of X-wing fighters for drama is okay.

Few Good Men, Cruise calling ANY colonel an SOB, expecting a salute indoors, at the end getting a salute indoors without a cover, by a prisoner. Movie with Mario Van Peeples on some battleship all officers wearing Army officer rank. These huge 2 inch 0-6 birds. Problem is since less than 2% of the elegiable people served in the last 20-30 years, no one knows if the uniform is wrong. Seriously, how much more does it add to the cost of a picture to get a technical advisor to make sure the uniform is at least correct.

Oh my god. Man I was watching a show called I almost got away with it. I love watching military aspects and finding things wrong. But in this episode it was a young soldier turned bad situation. The Drill Sergeant was Army, they kept calling him sir, which is a Marine title used for their DI's. Then the Sergeants rank, E-6 on the collars, and had left sleeve stripes, on his non class A uniform, which unless I missed something after 2005 when I got out, you don't wear rank stripes on your duty uniform. But his rank stripes (also on left sleeve, not on right) made him a master sergeant. I also like looking at ribbons and medals and finding them out of order

I caught Mel Gibson and his CSM in one scene of We Were Soldiers where he was in his uniform and was wearing a Blue Agelet on the right shoulder and a brown one on the left and his CSM was wearing the same thing. They were two different sizes, the blue being a big open weave while the brown one looked about the size of shoe string tie. It just looked weird.

For me, it's not so much the movies but most of the tv shows, especially on the Discovery channels or some of the other 'reality' type channels...you'll see a person in 'uniform' but with no name tags on it, nothing really, and the hair of the person is definitely not regulation..that stuff gets to me...as for movies, I kinda expect stuff to be out of whack...especially when it comes to vehicles and the like...Take Patton for example, unless there happen to be a battalion of Tigers lying around the producers had to use something akin to a tiger, also alot of the planes are substituted by alot of look alikes so stuff like that doesn't get to me...it's the stuff that can actually be 'worked' with that get to me....

Thought I was done with this, but.... Watched a 2 hour NCIS movie episode last night. The gist of the plot is that Director Jenny while on assignment, with Gibbs, in Europe some time in the past was involved with what comes across, but is never actually stated, as a "hit" on some bad guys. This assignment comes back to haunt Dir Jenny because she missed the one she was to have "hit", and the target has come back to even the score with her and Gibbs. As an added twist to the plot, Dir Jenny has some unidentified terminal disease. Dir Jenny contacts the former agent that lives in Mexico, but can be stateside in a matter of minutes, to help her dispatch the would be dispatchers before they can get to Gibbs. Dir Jenny goes down in a hail of gunfire, 4 against 1.... Sadly I have to admit watching to the end out of nothing other than morbid curiosity.

How about the scene in the movie Waterworld where the smokers have a quad 50 but they keep firing. They're not shooting it and in short bursts or shooting continuously. Won't that cause the barrels to overheat and explode?

I cringe whenever I watch a WWll war movie, where the characters use 1960 slang instead of the 40s slang. Another sight that makes me cringe is the sight of a modern Rail Road engine, like the modern Amtrak ones, instead of a steam one.

Tears of the sun: FA18's flying slick yet dropping more ordnance than a B-52 could carry. Pearl Harbor: The biggest joke ever perpetrated, two yahoos who are able to defeat the entire Japanese attack in outdated fighters, then go on to fly bombers with the Tokyo raiders. One even flew Spitfires with the RAF, Huge NEVER HAPPENED. There are many other Hollywood movies that reek of BULL FLOP. Uniform violations Don't get me started.

I was in JAG for 12 years. I could not watch the show. None of the attorneys (or JAG personnel, for that matter) I knew could handle weapons, never mind fly a plane. A Major handed me his .45 and said, "Steve, clean this for me." I told him, "Sir, I can't. It's not mine". He then said, "Niether can I. I don't know how." I then proceeded to show him how, and he never asked me again. I'm sure he had aske others, though.

I have gone through these responses and they are CLASSIC!!! but I wanna flip the coin. How about some of Hollywood's Cinematic events that YOU feel were spot on where the Military was Concerned? I have a few but I will mention one here. The 1957 classic "Heaven knows Mr. Allison with Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr. I feel that John Huston did a great job directing this movie and staying as close to the Marine Motto as possible: Semper Fidelis, Always Faithful. I can see a Corporal putting himself out in harms way to prevent hundreds or thousands of his Brothers from being hurt or killed by dismantling the Japanese coastal artillery by throwing the breech plugs into the surf while the Navy bombards the island. The rest of the movie is easy to believe as well.

What are your thoughts?

Under Siege.

In the movie, old salty former crew members on the USS Missouri (a museum ship) moved a 16" HE shell from aft forward to fire from Turrent 1. The shells weigh 2700 pounds. Also it takes a minimum of 77 crew members to operate a 16" gun turret. There's no way the crew in the movie could have fired the shell.

It is hard for me to say. There are so many of them. The biggest is when they enter a building to clear it and start yelling at the of their lungs the name of their branch and their country. An example would be me entering a brick building yelling "US Marines, come out with your hand where I can see them." If there was an ambush or hostiles I would have spoiled the surprise and told them that I was there and coming for them. While this might alert non-hostiles it destroys the shock and aw of me suddenly appearing to stomp a new zip code into a hostile and get me killed.

I love the "haircuts, the beards (and their not SEALS either), and most of all the medals on the BDU's , I don't think anyone in Hollywood, at least in the last 30 years, has ever been a member of the Armed Forces. The old black and white World War 2 movies were the best, most of the actors in those actually at one time served!

Besides the 1000 round M4 magazines or uniform violations or actors that can't wear a beret correctly, my biggest goof- beef is that in some shows EVERYBODY has nicknames. My personal pet peeve is grenades that take 20 seconds to blow. The worst example I ever saw was that Die Hard movie about the airport. Bruce Willis is in the cockpit of some military plane, and the bad guys start lobbing grenades into the cockpit, but they don't blow up until after Willis has time to strap himself into the ejection seat and eject, at which point all the grenades go off simultaneously.

Any movie dealing with Army CID. I have yet to see a movie which depicts how CID actually functions. I was a CID Agent for a number of years and finished my active duty career as an Instructor at the MP School teaching numerous subjects to CID, MPI, Officer Basic, Officer Advanced, and CID Warrant Officer Courses. Two of the most outlandish movies were Persidio (sic) and The General's Daughter. I suppose it is even worse now that CID is back under the Provost Marshal General. CID was made a stove pipe organization, answering to the Sec. Army, for a reason.

It seems as if we all are irked by uniform, hair and military bearing gaffs as well as weapons with seemingly endless magazine capacity - here are a few of my own:
1. Communication jargon that is either from the wrong era or simply improper radio protocol.
The use of the term 'Over and out'; 'Roger that', copy (or copy that - my personal pet peeve) in any war movie prior to 1970 when this term became broadly popular with CB radio fans. Not only is it completely out of date, it wouldn't be tolerated for long.
2. The wrong equipment for the era - Jeeps are very commonly misused. A Willy's or Ford is rarely seen - same with Studebaker trucks which were ubiquitous during WWII and Korea.
3. Wrong year civilian vehicles or civilian vehicles from the late 30's or 40's sporting a Carson top, baby moons or chrome wire wheels and blue dots.
4. Running out of ammo and not being aware you are empty. Infantry soldiers are trained to unconsciously keep track of the number of rounds fired and instinctively know when they are nearing the last round or two in their magazine. Continuing to try to fire when the bolt is to the rear is either a total novice or someone scared witless in the fire fight which is possible.
5. The star gets shot in the leg or arm but continues to run at top speed or have incredible stamina fighting in some fashion of mixed martial arts without passing out from lack of blood.
In my opinion, most of the best military movies were: Glory; Gettysburg, Patton; McArthur; Tora, Tora, Tora; Midway; Pork Chop Hill; Band of Brothers; The Longest Day; a Bridge too Far; We Were Soldiers and the opening scenes of Saving Private Ryan.
We shall never likely see a movie that fully satisfies our critical eyes and ears.

The TV show Stargate SG1. Pilot episode, Col Jack O'Neill is in an elevator going to meet the General. The man on the elevator with him has a Master Sgt chevron as well as Major Oak Leaves on his collar. A new way to say, Sgt Major? I did read an article about an actual Military Technical Advisor. He said that many of the things he recommended for change or insertion were overruled for either expediency, dramatic license, or cost.

I just watch Season 1 episode 15 of the new version of Hawaii Five-O. There is a scene of a naval vessel that the caption says is USS Enterprise. I wasn't in the Navy, but I was at the commissioning of the USS Enterprise CVN-65 in 1961 and my son was stationed on her in the early 2000's, maybe 2002. She is a beautiful ship. But the one on the TV show looks like what I would think was a Helo Carrier. If anyone has Netflix and can see that ship. I would just be curious how even the worst Military Tech advisor could mess this up.

Here's one that's a little more obscure but particularly annoying because it's such a great movie. In Saving Private Ryan the squad comes up on a German machine gun position. Tom Hanks decides to get back into the war and take it out. Fine. But after they took out the gun I was just sitting there thinking "Where the hell are the other Germans"? Did they really just set a machine gun in place and have absolutely zero support around it? No overlapping sectors of fire with other guns? No unit 200 meters away? No radio? And once the fight ended the Americans just hung around and dug graves and talked for what seemed like hours. Again, where the hell were the other Germans? Not one German was close enough to hear their buddies in a firefight. Not one German thought "Hey, should we go check on Hans and Franz"? I suppose in the chaos of post D-Day France it's not entirely improbable that a MG team got abandoned (but decided to defend the broken radar site with their lives anyway) but this scene has always bothered me on a tactical level.

For me it's a tie...In the movie "Commando" Colonel Matrix (played by Arnold Schwarzeneggar) places several Claymore anti-personnel mines alongside a barracks type building, and when he sets them off the entire 4 story building blows up from inside, nothing left but matchsticks. And in the movie "First Blood 2" John Rambo (played by Sylvester Stallone) fires a LAW rocket from inside a helicopter filled with POW's he just rescued from a North Vietnamese camp, and there is no backblast and everyone is perfectly OK. (And in various scenes, the rocket actually switches back and forth between a RPG to a LAW and then back to an RPG).

They stopped irritating me as much when I was told that Hollywood intentionally messes things up so as not to be accused of impersonating the actual military, but....the ammunition thing is definitely one for me. I've seen TV shows where a 9mm Glock pistol fires 30+ rounds and then reloads once and runs out of ammo 4 rounds later.

I can tell you which movie I feel came closest to getting it right. Two of them, band of brothers got the group dynamics of a deployment spot on and Stripes perfectly depicted the thought processes of your average private down to the shitstorm their stupid decisions make. The newest Fast And Furious movie has the "Heroes" chasing a submerged Soviet Alpha Submarine being operated by remote control across the ice at about 90 mph to stop it from launching it's Nuclear missiles. 1) Top speed of a submerged Alpha is about 40 knots. 2) No sub ever made can be controlled remotely! It's more of a general mistake on a multitude of modernist, Hollywood crap movies. Mostly sc-fi stuff. They'll have some PhD scientist who is directing special forces on some science puke mission. Hollywood portrays the special forces as insubordinate, cocky assholes. The reality is that special forces take the mission very seriously and are 100% professional about it. Cocky, insubordinate assholes don't get very far in the military. But hey, the liberal elite hate the military so what do you expect?

There is no end to the number of teeth grinding mistakes in Hollywood fair. However some of the biggest blunders I've seen are the wrist watch in Glory, black boots on WWII GIs, and an Italian made film I once saw where a jeep comes around a bend and runs into the field of fire of a MG-42. The gun shreds the driver and passenger, but the dirty windshield that was up during the head on assault was undamaged. Also, let us not forget the Battle of the Bulge were not a single German tank was accurate or every British colonial movie that has the lads in the scarlet blouse after they changed to khaki. Don't even want to get into the French Foreign Legion uniform failures. A few years back I spent a couple days with Dale Dye. He was keynoting a seminar at a war games convention. His company trains Hollywood actors to look real in war movies. I asked him what was the hardest part of his job and he said teaching someone who thinks the sun doesn't wake up until he does, how to function in a team. Most movies center on a protagonist...several folks striving together to accomplish a goal is unthinkable to them. I guess that's why the best war movies I've seen show the importance of teamwork, sacrifice and trust. Goofs aside, that's what makes a movie REAL to me.

There was this one Hallmark movie my mother-in-law watched on a regular basis. I don't recall the name of it, but me, my wife (Army vet) and my brother-in-law (Marine vet) all dubbed it "Operation Epic Sweater Fail", because it presented the old green Army Service Uniforms (from Dress to Class B) as consisting of the nothing but a garrison sweater, decorations on said garrison sweater and dress pants. I hate it when someone fires a shoulder weapon and it blows a vehicle 20 feet into the air. I reckon most all those Anti-Tank weapons are firing shape charges or a chunk of Sabot which is not going to flip a vehicle unless it is loaded with explosives.

Any movie or TV show that cuts to someone with a weapon and you hear them chambering a round sometimes multiple times in the same scene. Especially someone with a shotgun. How many times do you have to chamber your special Hollywood shotgun to get it to work? What's the point of having the weapon for defense / attack if you have to chamber it 10 times to get it to work?

Saw a TV movie the other night and it made me realize what a wuss I am. A sniper , using a 50 cal. rifle, shot the hero in the arm. He staggered a few feet then fell down. His buddies got a first aid kit from the van and patched him up and they all ran off. He continued his mission with a big band aid on. When I got hit with shrapnel from a RPG I went ape. It hurt and there was blood. Mine which made it worse.

I think that I'm just not going to respond in depth but I'd have to say that Hollywood deplicts movies from the eye of the beholder in their personal view, it's about what appeases the public, not the actuality of real life events, I have family that own a grip company and when ya talk to people that write the scripts and that have never been in the service and that haven't ever been to war much less even gone they basic, their perception is blood, guts and glory. I have never seen a motion pic that even comes close to representing real life struggles of war, blood, guts, and glory, with pain and suffering

I think that Clint Eastwood's 'Hamburger Hill' was certainly one of the worst military flicks I've ever seen. And it really pains me to say it because I think he is genius as an actor/director/producer/musician and just about everything he touches.

25 year old "Colonels" piss me off. Saluting out in the open in a combat area is silly (unless you really don't like the person you are saluting). Humvees that actually run... Gun barrels that don't melt after about 8 minutes of full auto. Really crappy hair cuts or lack thereof. Hats indoors.

Worst is explosions of mortars or grenades or other lower yeilds...seems no-one gets hurt unless they are in the blast itself. Not the way it works...HE rounds are frag: they fill the Air with shrapnel which tears the living hell out of everything nearby. Really bugs me when our hero is running along, and explosions happening close around him and he don't get a scratch, when he should look like splattered hamburger.

The Last Ship, it's a farce! A ship at Sea as long as this one has been, several years, would be a rust bucket!! How do these people get paid? There's govt in turmoil! How do they get promoted? Can't remember the name but there was a TV movie staring Patrick Swazy, when a kid, and the Russians landed and took over Colorado. They were putting people in camps and in one town a group of "kids" broke away and went into the mountains. They had some hunting rifles, a couple of pistols and a couple of bows with arrows. They must have had Boy Scout training because they took on the Russian Soldiers, including their Special Force troops. They picked up foreign weapons and knew how to use them to knock out tanks and APC's. They could sneak into the Army's camps and kill people. They all make Rambo look like a sissy. But it was funny.

My favorite goof is in NCIS. A geographically challenged individual would think Norfolk is a suburb of DC. They can leave the Navy Yard in DC, drive to Norfolk, conduct an investigation, all day, and drive back to DC and still be in time for lunch. If they drive, it is at least 4 hours in traffic. Also, why would sailors stationed on a ship in Norfolk live in the DC area?

The rampant fraternization between men and women in the same unit and between soldiers of superior rank with their subordinates. The almost total disregard of military customs and courtesies between subordinates and superiors and the lack of consequences for violations of orders and regulations. A major offenders is the CW's "Valor". which is more like a Melrose Place or Riverdale in uniform than a military themed drama.

In the "sword and sandal" flics, like "Gladiator" I go nuts when I see the Romans (or any other ancient troops) riding horses with saddles and STIRRUPS! A company will spend millions on authentic looking sets, costumes and equipment—then blow it on something so lame. I thought the show that came closest to getting things right was HBO's "Rome."

Iron Eagle, this 16 year old kid steals an F-16 and gets into a dog fight. I lost count of how many AIM-9 missiles were fired from the same wing-tip launch point. Problem is, you have two wing-tips and two AIM-9's mounted there, that's it. I saw this movie with a bunch of my AMMO troops and we laughed our asses off watching that flick.

It's not just the military. Helicopters. Smoke ALWAYS come billowing out of the OH-58's or Bell 206's BATTERY compartment. Also, when the helicopter cranks and the rotors are at full rpm in 3 seconds. And then the guy who can FLY the helicopter is on the ground shooting at the hovering chopper and doesn't think to shoot the tail rotor, which would knock it out of the sky post-haste.
Also, I've worked on railroads and almost universally they screw up train operation. If a train comes apart while operating, the brakes would AUTOMATICALLY set on both portions of the train. There are so much more, but we'll leave it at that.

Was watching the TV show A Long Way Home. Two different contingents of soldiers ambushed and trapped by insurgents, running out of ammo and no one coming to help. Oh my. Where to start. All of my brothers have covered good ground. One thing, A good gunner doesn't carry belts of ammunition around his neck, especially with the nose of the bullets into his neck. That is so wrong. The thing that really irritates me is the assumption by Hollywood actors that they understand what it is to be a grunt after they have gone through a truncated basic course. My hat's off to Dale Dye, but you can't turn a weinie into a grunt that easy. Being a grunt requires a whole lot more sweat, pain, and simple willingness to hump a ruck than any actor can ever imagine. They may get the look right, but don't tell me you understand what it means to be infantry until you've eaten ham and mothers, cold, in a rainstorm, at midnight, in a muddy hole in the ground. The documentaries of the making of good films like "Band of Brothers", and "Saving Private Ryan" just piss me off. These actors think that they have some insight into the mind of a grunt. They don't understand us, much less anyone else in the service. They can't know. And they don't know what they don't know. But then, we had something beyond words. That's the thing most missing in the movies. Not the gross mistakes. I'm not expressing myself well. The respect, even between services and arms. If you've been there, you know.

There are so many.

But I will pick on Pearl Harbor.

#1. An Officer is "ordered" to join the RAF Eagle Squadron. Nope.. Never happened. The US State Department was opposed to any US Citizen going to England to "volunteer" to serve in the RAF. Let alone a serving Officer is given orders from their commanding officer to do so.

#2. Said Officer was in New York showing his girlfriend around. Then boards a Train to go to his RAF Adventure.. I am unaware of a tunnel being reached by train to England in 1940. If he is going to a ship.. New York Harbor is right there..

#3. The Black Mess Attendant played by Cuba Gooding Jr is based on a real-life person. Mess Attendant 2nd Class Doris “Dorie” Miller. Who manned a 50 Caliber gun on the USS West Virginia during the attack. He won the Navy Cross for his efforts. But in the movie, he shot down a plane. There is no record of any aircraft being shot down by anyone on the USS West Virginia on that day. He was recognized for his bravery in assisting his wounded captain and then manning the weapon after the original crew was killed or wounded. Not for shooting down planes.

#4. USAAF pilots who were laterally transferred between Fighter Squadrons and Bomber Squadrons such as the two pilots who flew P-40's over Pearl Harbor (Which by the way.. never happened at the altitudes they depicted in the movie) to become B-25 Pilots in the Doolittle Raiders. Never happened in real life.

I could go on and on about this movie for historical foul-ups and outright stupidity in depicting military even in those times.

Two helicopter pilots sabotage a covert CIA mission, lie about it, file false reports, disclosed classified information to an unauthorized person, the female pilot sneaks off to meet with the male pilot to plot their story - they start to have sex but they caught themselves because that would be wrong. GTFOH. I could go on but it just pisses me off and I want to watch Bama - Georgia in a good mental state.

“Panzers.” I understand that real, operational German armor is very rare. But quite a few movies simply used contemporary American tanks, invariably painted gray with giant Balkan crosses and huge red numbers, to represent them. Fury was one of the few movies I know of which had an actual panzer (a Tiger I which had been captured in Tunisia in 1943 by the British). Even dressing up modern armor as panzers is fine by me (Saving Private Ryan with its T-34 Tiger but apparently original Marders, Band of Brothers with its assortment of panzers based on British APCs), but simply taking what’s available and painting it gray doesn’t do it for me.

How about the movies that got it right? “A Bridge Too Far,” after reading both German and British General’s accounts, is pretty damn historically accurate. The actors even looked similar to the real characters... the events, like failure to bring the correct radio crystals and spares, came directly from the AARs. Yes, there was a bunch of artistic license surrounding the conversations, but the events, timeline, and sequence were all correct.

Although I am a big fan of The Duke, I would have to say the movie The Green Berets was the biggest crock of horseshit ever depicted on the screen..Kelly’s hero’s was more realistic...The movie was total propaganda. When the film was made the Vietnam war was at the peak of it’s i’m popularity in the states… This movie was an attempt to sway the American public that it was a righteous war. Soldiers that were in Vietnam and served already in Vietnam that saw that movie...laughed hysterically when they first saw it. It was a running joke in the US military. The laughingstock of the US Army at the time. Although I really do believe that John Wayne thought the movie was accurate in it’s depiction of the war, I criticize him for not investigating what was really going on over there. His heart was definitely in the right place but he should have done some investigating Before filming...I’m in barest to be an American every time I see that movie. Again, what a crock of horseshit.

Without a doubt...the engine sounds of aircraft. Constantly every helicopter sounds like a Bell 47. (TH-13). Radial engines sound different than V-12s....50s and early 60s jet engines are drastically different than later models. If you are filming anything, record what you are using! It’s Not that hard!

At least 2 movies with big mistakes that annoy the piss out of me. Battle of the Bulge and The Big Red One both use American tanks as german panzer oh and the movie Patton where they literally used Patton tanks as german tanks. Those aside I love The Big Red One and Patton

Haircuts and shaving. They usually always screw those up. I liked the movie “Crimson Tide”, but their depiction of submarine life and ops is so far off base that it’s comical..

In top gun... Maverick gets into his f14.. then they show the wing and left portion of an at intruder. Or in Navy seals... Hotel at VA beach. They open the curtains and there are ships in the background... Uh... That's 20 miles away in Norfolk.

Most of the NCOs I worked with were obsessed with ALWAYS asserting their authority with threats of counciling statements throughout the day. You never see that in any “realistic” military movies.

As a sub vet, “Crimson Tide” irritates me to no end! From the supply officer making that enlisted man do push ups on the bus, to that stupid dog that was allowed on board! Where are all those submariners running around to just because the boat is diving? That whole movie is devoid of any reality of submarine life.

Salutes are my pet peeve they should be crisp forearm parallel to the ground etc. Steven segall's in the one movie where he is in Navy dress whites just aggravates the hell outta me.

The mortar scene in Saving Private Ryan. They have 60mm mortar rounds but no gun, so they decide to use the rounds by striking the bottom on a rock to supposedly arm it and throwing it like a football...
1. Mortar rounds don't arm that way. There's a little fan in the nose that spins down a screw shaft and hits a contact plate. What they're banging on the ground right beside their feet is the main propellant charge. If they managed to set that off they would probably lose their foot from the ankle down .
2. The greatest pro quarterback in history couldn't throw it far enough to arm it. Which is a good thing, because they couldn't throw it far enough to be out of the kill radius either

In “Patton” the Gerneral arrives to a meeting in a Packard Limousine. But the car arrive in is a 22nd or 23rd series. Those cars weren’t built until 1948 to 1950

Full Metal Jacket. The head scene when Pyle shoots DI and then himself, no tiles behind either were damaged by what Pyle said was 7.62FMJ rounds

Stealth killed it for me as an AF guy. Watching them walk out in high flight suits like U-2 pilots wear, hooked up to LOX, but their helmet visors are wide open, and then the nail in the coffin was when they got to the F-117, and the cockpit was big enough for 2 with room to spare, I said that's it I'm done I cant watch any more of fhis.

The Package, an otherwise good film, completely ruined by the lack of input from a military advisor. But the biggest offender was Basic with John Travolta. I think the only thing they got right with that one was the layout of the guard shack.

Saw a movie call “punch” that supposedly starred “real” rangers. I am not a ranger but I spent six months replacing tiles in a ranger school and PX , so I think theyre some cool professionals. I felt that the movie captured some of what the ranger attitude is like, but the training was totally off, more like special forces training.

In the movie, Karate Kid II, an Air Force two striper is trying to help Mr Miyagi and Daniel with directions to his village in Okinawa, and asks the "Sarge" where it is. The sergeant then replies, "You are standing on it corporal." Well, there are no corporals in the Air Force, and his rank was actually an Airman First Class (E-3). The correct response from the sergeant should have been, "You're standing on it airman."
