PV2 J M The answer is simple. Who is the warfighter and who is the Support? Infantrymen (11B) are the primary combatant force of the military. Cavalry Scouts (19D) are nothing more than hilltop observers. They "creep" up in their moderately armored BFV, watch the enemy, and then call the warriors into battle. The Infantryman is the knife in the dark and the nightmare to the evil at heart. The Cavalry are Peeping Toms.

They are different job/roles, even if some of their skill sets overlap.
The infantry is the main land combat force and backbone of the Army. They are responsible for capturing, destroying and repelling enemy ground forces.
The cavalry scout is responsible for being the eyes and ears of the commander during battle. They track and report their activity and direct the employment of weapon systems to their locations.
Primarily combat, closing with and destroying the enemy, vs. primarily reconnaissance, gaining rout and enemy information to better allow the maneuver and use of combat forces.

Infantry units may conduct reconnaissance, cavalry scouts may engage the enemy in direct combat, but their overall role and function is simply different.

Ahhh, grasshopper. The differences are many, but so are the commonalities.

-- Basic mission: others are posting on this so it is covered
-- 19Ds have to have normal color vision; 11Bs just have to be able to tell the difference between the red (stop) light and the green (go) light.
-- Only 11Bs can earn and wear the highly coveted CIB and EIB, and the blue cord; 19Ds have the spurs and hats for functions, but it just isn't the same. Still, both of these uniform distinctions give each MOS an advantage when seeking companionship of the feminine persuasion at a ball. (I probably should say appropriate persuasion since neither MOS is gender-restricted now.)
-- However both know in their hearts that they are the baddest, meanest, toughest, yet coolest warriors that ever walked the face of the earth. This contributes to a certain confidence that causes all other support personnel to quake and quiver when either walk in the door.

I give you a simple example from a true story of my scouts and infantry training together.

My instructs on the range.
Drop the mag and move off my range hurry up!
My two scouts see mag table 10meters behind me and move out.

The frightend of the 6ft1 NCO he had never heard yell before or even seen angry before the 11b with a deer in head lights look drops it in the dirt at his feet and turns to leave while tripping over his own feet....

That is the day I thanked god I did not go infantry I be in jail on murder 1.

I’m an 11B, my last tour in Iraq I was in a mixed 11B 19D platoon. I love calling scouts gay as much as any 11B, but in Iraq we did the same job. We had a mixed platoon and even squads, I honestly have a hard time remembering who was Infantry and scouts, and despite the fact the hats are gay, some of the best NCOs and soldiers I ever worked with were scouts. I’d go in to combat with those guys any day, but definitely think you guys need to do something about that “scouts out” thing....

Infantrymen close in and destroy the enemy. 19D, cav scouts I believe, they find the enemy and relay that information to higher ups. They engage the enemy if necessary. But since they are a tactical asset, their standing orders are to avoid contact at all costs.

Once upon a time, before the Army in its infinite wisdom decided it had too many MOS, there were shades of gray. IIRC, the were 5-6 11 series MOS, two of which, 11M, Mechanized Infantryman, and 11H, Anti-Armor Infantryman, were very much like a cav scout... the former were the M2 Bradley (and M113 before that) crewmen, while the latter were assigned in 4-5 man teams in a TOW equipped vehicle. When the Great MOS Purges of the Post Gulf Era occurred, the former was absorbed into 11B, while the members of the latter were absorbed into 19D

Having been a medic in both a scout platoon in an armor BN and a infantry company, the biggest trouble scouts get into is direct action. The best scouts I ever worked with were awesome at being unseen and quietly calling in 120mm mortar fire. Blue cords have their role, kill stuff. Both branches are fine and wish they were as cool a a Combat Medic, spent my fair share putting IVs in to hung over 11Bs and 19D.

2 letters and 7 digits. LOL! So it really goes like this. The infantry is the largest of all MOS's in the U.S. Army meaning it has the largest amount of Soldier's that all do the same job. It is referred to as the Queen of Battle. As every married man know that a Queen will rule her King. The king may have the voice for his people to hear but he's gonna do what his queen tells him he'll do. Imagine it like an old wagon wheel. There's a center hub, many spokes and an outer wheel. The infantry would be like the hub, the support jobs would be like the spokes and outer wheel would be like the artillery or King of Battle. Can the hub still roll down a hill with out its spokes and outer wheel. Yes it can, however its efficiency is greatly diminished without its spoke and outer wheel. Can the spokes roll down a hill? Most likely yes but they'll be even less effective without the hub and outer wheel. Can the outer wheel roll down hill alone? Yes but when it hits a rock (Anti Tank Mine) or IED its gonna be stopped either demolished or damaged. Independently all MOS can work by themselves but the infantry is designed to Fight and Win Wars. All other Jobs the Army offers are there to Support the Infantry!

The real problem is a SCOUT must use stealth as a tool for recon.NOT many folks follow or SEE what we do,as a course of the job...the ONLY infantry who know are mortars or we sick them on others as we hunt more.OR as in Desert Storm WE are the raiding armor ...no infantry around but Mortars and Zoomie FACs.GSR radar and artillery FOs ride behind and medics were will us all.the real and elite in prior deployment.

Overlooking all the bravado and adolescent rivalry between the branches; 19D's are the Eyes and Ears the a BN cannot function with out, they are not merely "observers" the Delta has the ability to engage enemy forces with massive indirect fires. Being 1/10 the size of an Infantry BN they rely on stealth to reach thier objectives.

By design if the 19D is the Eyes and the Ears; the 11B is the Sword. There mission is to take and hold ground, overwhelming the enemy when and where they least expect it. How are they able to accomplish that? But using the information provided back to the BN S2, by the 19D.

There will always be rivalry, but like Step-brothers, they need each other to succeed.

Go light Infantry or airborne infantry. Have to clean and maintain less equipment. My Drill Sergeant partner was a Cav Scout. Great guy smart, Bradley Mastergunner. Used to run around yelling out Bradley Fighting Vehicle fire commands all the time. Probably more opportunities for promotion and schools in the Infantry. But I got out in 2003. So my advice is old.

The actual name for the 11B (11 BAAM BAAM) (regarding to the sound of the firearms when it’s fired and the sound of explosions of hand-Grenades and other devices they use to destroy the enemy) so it’s the fighting force, No doubt about it. The 19D they are as mentioned forward scouts plus they direct fires either from air or Big guns Far behind the front lines .. So both MOS is are Crucial to the outcome of the battle .. I did not had the honor to serve in any one of those MOS’s .. I served with the military intelligence and the psychological operations (It was the most enjoyable time of my life) .. Any MOS in the military is very important and it contributor to the outcome of the battle. Everyone served in any MOS in any Capacity, they are heroes in my eyes, no matter what.
