But what can happen for Summary and Company Grade levels (this will be up to your Cadre and Commander) are restrictions to base/specific locations, extra duty, possible loss of pay and rank. My recommendations: Get THREE alarm clocks and set them to go off 5-8 minutes apart. But also have them set to where you will be dressed and out the door and be outside ready for formation AT LEAST 15 minutes prior. Getting in trouble sucks. But, instead of focusing on the punishment, focus on the cause of the problem and move to learn from it and FIX it so it does not happen again. I'll give you praise for acknowledging you have a problem and asking for guidance. Now, again, put on your big boy pants and learn from your issues. Do your best to NOT repeat these mistakes. Also, I would recommend that you remove the (P) from your rank. All that does it pretty much draw unwanted attention to you.........especially as a PV2. Plus if anyone is Promotable and then becomes Flagged, that (P) goes bye bye.

One last word of advice/caution: When you get to your duty assignment, and you continue to have these issues of Failure to Report......the Army will have no qualms getting the paperwork ready to put you back on the street and promote you to PFC (Private Friggin Civilian). I have to agree with Colonel Lenertz, that you appear to think you are 'special'. You say no, but the "JEDI" on your ID tag says otherwise. Now maybe this will change after you get your Article 15. I hope so, but based on my experiences, I am skeptical.

Get your act together! You had better take SGM Marquez's advice to heart, or get used to being a PV2 or PFC for your entire hitch and then gone. That would be why should the CoC have an interest in keeping you around? It is a cold question, but is the accurate one. If you didn't know, it's a numbers and level of effort game. They bring in a set number of newbies knowing that a small set won't be a decent enough fit, so it's better to identify early and move them out. There's a somewhat set level of effort to bring people along, and having to expend a lot more on one is a detriment to the others. In a declining (nothing has happened to build up under Trump yet) times, you don't want to be the long necked turkey around Thanksgiving.

So if you really have an interest in moving forward in the MIL arena, you need to demonstrate the investment in you will be worthwhile. The fact--if I read correctly some of what you wrote--you are not woken up in the morning by some fire-breathing drill sergeants and are left to wake yourself, that too is telling. You don't know how good you got it, yet you've abused it.

I'm guessing you're in a soft skill MOS, since most if not all of their initial training is so separated; unlike many in combat arms. If that's the case, that's not a problem; soft skills kill the bad guys too, but what I am getting at is that it seems you still lack enough self-discipline to function in an environment without firm structure around you. Your training environment somehow lacks that level of structure--or you're just that much of a rebel--which FYI is NOT an issue for most of your combat arms trainee peers, who are completely owned until graduation.

I suggest you build for yourself that structure, that discipline you are lacking. In the end it all comes back around to you anyway, so may as well embrace the suck and get on-board now.

In the meantime, if you are facing an Article 15, that's recoverable. Hell, I had a 1SG who truly believed you don't go up (in rank) without falling down (in rank). His greater point being most mistakes are not only recoverable, but a great learning experience; even if it hurts. Especially if it hurts.

Do you time, take your punishment, lick your wounds, and learn from it. Don't just SAY it, SHOW it. If you live the changes you need to make, people will see that. If you don't and it's all talk, they'll see that too. I too was a member, and was an E-2 come to think of it lol. As you are still in TRADOC, I am not sure if they follow you or not, they never used to. One of the folks still in can chime in on that.

I would avoid bringing it up when you get to your first unit. You want them to judge you on your performance there and not baggage you bring from AIT. So accept the punishment (which you have), learn from it, and use it as a character building experience. Despite me getting an Article 15 as a Private, I still went on to be a NCO and had a good career before I got out (ETS, not booted lol). It sucks, but most other jobs would just fire you and be done with it. So there is an up side to it. SGT David T. Just remember this - when you are not where you are supposed to be - someone else must take up the slack. Any unit is only as good as its people. When you get to your first unit - just remember that your brothers and sisters depend on you. There is no greater honor or responsibility given to a soldier then the trust of his fellow soldiers. You can either accept and return that trust - or not. The choice is yours. There is not a leader out there that wants to chapter a soldier. In AIT, a summarized or a company grade article is most likely. Anyone can say they will do better, but your actions will speak louder than your words. Take this UCMJ action as a wake-up call to better yourself. We all screw up, but as they say, it's what you do after that counts. We had a seargent that had the B billet of field day NCO show up 10 minutes late to field night. As a result half of everyone took off even though they knew field night still had to be done. As a result, those of us that stayed still had to complete everything for Friday a.m. inspection, which we failed. One person does make a difference!! I wont get into all the details of who was punished/couseled for what, but that seargent had a metal trash can everywhere he went for a month. Now, lets say its not formation but a firefight and you dont show up in time with more ammo. , by the time you get there your fireteam could be dead. There is a point to everything in the military. Some things you have to figure out on your own, but they are no less important. If this is something you are not willing to do, get out of the military as soon as you can. I dont know what all is involved, but there is such a thing as failure to adapt. It might be better for all involved for you to speak with base legal about this. You wont be released under honorable conditions, but it is better than a dishonorable discharge or letting down the folks in your unit because of your selfishness. Its not about you. Until you accept that, you will continue to screw up. So fix it now or get out. Waiting for the military to put you out WILL be infinately worse than doing it yourself. However, I truly hope you choose the high road and buck up, accept what you are given with a smile and put all this behind you. Our command needed us to have our RADAR and CTO facilities open at 0700, but that meant that we had to be there early enough to check all of the equipment, receive NOTAMS from our ARTCC, take the daily briefing from our regional FAA representative...and none of that was inconsequential. We had to check the calibration of every RFC scope, every Approach scope, every Departure scope, we had to check the operability of every frequency (we had 15 frequencies and 12 interfacility communications channels) in both UHF and VHF as well as performing our test on GUARD frequency (which we have a 5 minute window to do or else it's a federal offense). The consequences of not getting our checklist done were up to an including causing the death of an aircrew through negligence, which is a class 2 felony even if you don't consider the fact that you just caused 4 pilots/navigators and 3-6 enlisted support personnel to die. We had to be there in time to do all of that *before* opening our facility and accepting our airspace.

When you get in to your command, you won't have exactly the same requirements, but you have to take your responsibilities seriously just as if you've got the same level of responsibility that we did. You may not know why you're being told to do something or how important it is when you do it, but it may be something so deadly important that your unit is literally counting on you to safeguard their lives. Everything you do must be with the outlook that you're potentially killing someone. So there have always been stupid people in charge that are not smart enough to take the time to understand what it takes to be effective leader. It's called the Peter Principle. You can learn from not only good leaders, but bad ones. Carry a notebook and write down things that you think are right and wrong with the way somebody leads. Later that night write why you think the way you do. Go back to them often and see if your opinions change. I started mine as a PFC and it formed my leadership style when I became and NCO. As many have mentioned, if you aren't early, you are late. In the military, timing is of ultimate importance. Think about if you overslept a movement, for example. A FTR could easily become AWOL under those circumstances (and I have actually known a SM who this happened to. It was not a fun situation to deal with). Additionally, you leave your squadmates short handed. I saw that you purchased an alarm clock and that is certainly a good start. However, you should remember that you have resources even before you had bought it. You are part of a team. Your NCOs are there to help. They won't babysit you, but if you haven't asked for their help, you aren't using all your resources to solve the problem. Likewise your squadmates and others around you. Iron sharpens iron. The more you and your squadmates help one another, the better soldiers you will all be. My only caveat, give help at least as much as you receive. These are my suggestions and my advice. Good luck to you. Good on your part for seeking guidance from others in this forum with much military knowledge and life experience. Take this experience and learn from it and don't make the same mistakes when you get to your active duty unit. Your squad leader, platoon sergeant and 1SG are not going to cut you any slack and will keep riding you until you either do the right thing or get out of the Army and stop wasting everyone's time when you're not serious about being in. The Army is not a free pay check every two weeks. You have to put in the time and effort and do whats asked of you to succeed. You just might find that the Army is just what you have been needing in your life. Listen to your seniors and learn as much as you can. Quit worrying about "finding a partner that can sham without getting caught!" You will have plenty of time to sham when the time is right, and you will have plenty of time to act like a Soldier as well. Learn some responsibility, learn to have your batttles back in any situation and learn some respect while youre in. If you take your career seriously, it can be rewarding in many ways. There will always be times when things look bleak and you question yourself as to why youre still there, but the good often outweighs the bad. Make life easier on yourself and your first line supervisor and do the right thing. Life will be much better for you if you do SFC Derrick Hardison Sat, 22 Jul 2017 18:33:20 -0400 2017-07-22T18:33:20-04:00 Response by SFC Derrick Hardison made Jul 22 at 2017 6:51 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-is-the-extent-of-an-article-15?n=2756891&urlhash=2756891

When I was a young Sergeant E5, I inherited a squad of Soldiers with "issues" when I arrived at my new unit. That was one of the biggest challenges of my career and I was miserable through most of it. Even though it is the NCO's job to take care of you, you should still consider the hardship you are putting on the NCO by your inability to follow instructions. This NCO has to call you, come find you, counsel you, give you corrective training, follow up on the counseling, go see the 1SG about your actions, get chewed out when you keep messing up, build a paper trail of more counselings until they finally have enough to proceed with getting you chaptered out of the Army. One Soldier with disciplinary issues can erode the fiber of a cohesive team. When an NCO devotes all their time to one Soldier with issues, it takes away from training and mentoring of the other Soldiers that are with the program. There is no "I" in team. Think about someone other than yourself and watch what can happen in your life. As a Drill that trained Privates such as yourself to be where you are supposed to be when told for almost two years (Seen this many times) - I ask you to WAKE the HELL Soldier up and make it to formation. It is not that damn difficult. As a Drill, I was up at 3:30 every morning for over two years and was to bed around midnight every night. The military is not a Social butterfly organization for you to lollygag your way to your appointed duty assignment (Formation). Now the next order of business is - You need to ask yourself - DO You want to be apart of an organization that will give you a life time of memories ? If So, then correct your action and accept the UCMJ actions, You might loose a rank and some cash, but if you get it together within a year, you can work to have it back. Now my parting note. What I ask of you is that - One day you could look back on this incident as an immature act that you have learned from and have an excellent career before you. Do the right thing here so that you don't cost someone's life down the road especially if you are ever sent to a conflict or a war zone. Being where you are when you are told to be is crucial to ensuring that the safety of fellow service members get to come home and be with their families, just like you want to be. But if you feel that you can not commit to any of this then talk to your commander about getting out as there will be someone that will want to be in the military and can be on time where they are supposed to be. You are admitting you have apparently failed to do this multiple times and you are still in training. The path you are on, regardless of the NJP is one that very well could lead to your own death or the death of your comrades. Just accepted that inevitably, you're going to be punished.

If you're up on an Article 15, and still in AIT...well, the reason to keep it as an article 15, is unless you're NCO or above...it effectively "falls off your record"...you fucked up as a tadpole soldier, took your knocks, and learned (hopefully)...that's what being a non-deployed enlisted below NCO really is...routine tasks and training, and taking fucked up little boys and girls who still think like civilians, DESPITE the training they have received, and reiterating training and instillation of discipline until it sticks properly...which is part of the reason a major part of the punishment for n article 15 is loss of rank, for an EM.

It never TRULY falls off your record, as promotions and loss of rank stay in your jacket...but a couple early on in your history don't make you a "bad soldier", necessarily...just says you screwed the pooch, but not badly enough to be jailed or thrown out, just to get a punishment rather fitting for someone who has screwed up in the "juvenile" ways most low ranking EM's get themselves article'd over...missed movement because you slept through an unfamiliar alarm, because you met a pair of college roommates who are both DTF, fistfight that the other guy is NOT willing to say was a matter of having tripped while helping "clean the latrine", similar...just dumb, young crap.

At Field Grade level...you're looking at back down to E-1, 6 weeks of "extra duty", restricted to battalion area for 6 weeks...doesn't affect you much, you're in AIT, and on duty 24/7, technically, anyhow, and restricted to company area, if not accompanied by instructors if your specialty's AIT works at ALL like Infantry AIT did in the late 80's...just means you're going to do a lot of more menial chores...like the stereotypical KP, or Smag's detail, picking up cigarette butts and trash from battalion area for hours. The loss of half a month's pay (at E-1 rate) for two months running sucks IMMEDIATELY (and is what usually leaves its mark on the punished soldier), but if you're still in training...you aren't even really heavily impacted by that, if you're single.

At company level...loss of one grade, 2 weeks extra duty, two weeks restriction to company area, two weeks' pay....and every damned shit detail Top can find for you...and believe me, First Sergeant's even "better" at finding them than Smaj...your fuckup marks HIS effectiveness, directly...you screwed HIM, personally. Smaj...you're just another kid soldier...his job is to manage the battalion's NCOs and the top of "middle management". That's why, at field grade, your LT, Cpt, First Sgt, and platoon sgt are all likely to be present...they are all the links between you, who screwed the pooch, and him...these are the people he HAS to consult, because THEIR job IS to know you...so they can advise the Col and Smaj as to whether THEY think you're recoverable, or not...which, in the end, makes up the difference between 6 weeks of suckage and some rank to regain, or a conduct discharge without courts-martial...Top and Cpt say they can make a decent soldier out of you, DESPITE your very obvious flaws...you stay. They shake their heads, Col is going to ask Smaj how sure he is you're a lost cause...if Smaj says you are, you are done. If Smaj says he thinks you can be saved, even though your immediate superiors don't...Col thinks it over a bit, and decides based on his opinion of that Smaj as a senior NCO.

Basically, kiddo, what I'm saying is you screwed up damned well...and your life's currently in the hands of people who will have to be advised by people you haven't been PERMITTED to grow familiar with, in most ways, and who don't get to interact with you the way a normally assigned senior of their position get to interact with THEIR junior enlisteds...

However, as long as nobody's said "court martial", best case is loss of rank, 2 weeks' "chores" and "grounding", and loss of two weeks' pay, worst case is discharged with OTH or LTH at E-1, AFTER you've done your extra duty and restriction, and lost the pay....with a "no reenlistment" mark on your record, should you decide you fucked up, and try again. Frankly on a failure to report...which sounds an awful lot like "AWOL, but did it while under orders to report to a new location" to me...and if I'm reading that right...well, sorry, I don't have much sympathy...that's DODGING your duty...which you took on voluntarily, when you enlisted. Honestly, I don't know how any Col or Smaj I ever met could allow that to stand...so if they are still anything like the senior NCOs and command officers I recall....I'd be expecting field grade, with OTH or LTH after your loss of rank, and "grounding"...but that's seen from the perspective of a Storm era vet, not Freedom or later. Yes, your bosses may ask you why, looking for a reason, but, if it becomes a habit you will be terminated. The military is no different, with one exception, they, the military, will continue to give you chances, using none judicial punishment, initially, as a warning to correct your behavior. If you still continue this behavior, they will then lead to judicial punishment to correct your behavior under UCMJ. That is where you're at now. If you can't practice that in AIT, you'll be no good for anyone in your first assignment. Remember why you enlisted, follow the sage advice given by the others in this thread, and get your act together. It sounds like you acknowledge the offense(s), so taking responsibility is one more step toward maturity. My group at AOBC once had to report for a full TA-50 layout at 0300, after some of our group didn't have their act together for the layout the day before. We were headed out on a 10-day field exercise and some (thankfully not me) needed a foot in the a-- as a wakeup call. You're in the Army, and if they tell you to be somewhere at a certain time, be it 1200 or 0200, there's a reason. Take the punishment if deserved, learn the lesson, and drive on. I'm answering this in a serious tone for others that may come along.

Think about how your actions as a screw up affect the others in your group and at your command. Platoon, watch section, whatever. Being late means that somebody has to cover for you until you show up. That person may be wanting to get off watch and go eat and rest. When you are late, they don't get to do those things. Pisses them off and gives you a very bad reputation. Once is "shit happens". After that it is "shit is about to happen to you". I had that happen to me. My watch relief was constantly late. On a submarine, everybody knows this and the guy who was supposed to relieve me started catching crap from everybody else. And to top it off, he was a senior E-6. The one thing I do remember was “you are the first (AWOL from CCF to NOT go to the brig) and by God you’ll be the last!”. There were some extenuating circumstances but none that would absolve me. My brother was also in the 82nd ABN and had earned Super Trooper while assigned to HQ Co. as a Chaplains Assistant. The Chaplain went to bat for me (over the extenuating circumstances) with the Col. Provost Marshall. I had sought to return after handling the personal problem for which the SGT told me to “go ahead and leave then...”. I had gone AWOL initially because I was greatly offended that I chose to be where I was and I was competing with others who were there as a court assigned alternative to prison. Nothing about that was “extenuating”. It was just juvenile stupidity. Extenuating was that I needed to get word to my fiancé that I would not be available for 30 days (yep, fiancé at 17... we’ve been married 45 years now). She has come from Texas with her sister to relatives in Red Springs to hide from a man who had been abusing her sister. The point here is things might go better than expected, they might not, but if you take your punishment and learn from it your can get back to where you were and better. I had earned the EIB and was an E-4 before 12 months had passed after my article 15. P.S. That fiancé of mine told me if I did not go back after my initial AWOL she would never marry me. She kept me from making the biggest mistake of my life permanent. Take the punishment, tell them you’ll do better and do it. You’ll be fine.
