It was about a boy and his father. Then the poem went dark as the son watched his father get killed, blood splattered everywhere, his soul escaping from the earth. We looked at him speechless and you could hear a pin drop. I pulled his NCO and the SPC4 aside and told them there are appropriate times for somethings, but it was not appropriate for a Christmas party. I took some of the blame for not screening the Christmas Poem. This guy jumps up and screams, "TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS!!!" He chose his target (a real butt-head of an E-5), who sat in a chair to be pied. The guy reared back and BLASTED the Sergeant in the face. Ended up breaking his nose, knocked out a tooth, and embedded whipped cream so far up the guy's sinuses that he got one hell of an infection. Once, many, many years ago, after a really good result on an IG, our CO decided we should have a PARTY, in true North Carolina Style. This of course, meant a barbacue with pork.
Since a whole pig takes at least a day to cook for the best taste apparently, some of us were assigned to pig duty, in the middle of a park... in a forest... in the middle of the night. Insert annoyed Lance Corporal muttering bad words and sitting beside sizzling pig in the darkness, ignoring the wildlife that kept coming out to investigate the smell.
Somewhere around three in the morning, said pig exploded. I mean, blew open the smoker, creating a little mushroom cloud of pork, rice and sparks that had yours truly diving for cover like a well trained Marine.
Picture it... four hours until the CO shows up, there is pig and rice raining down from the sky, creating a happy, loud, and shockingly large group of birds that descended upon me like a bad remake of a horror film, causing me to squeal like a girl and hide in my car. In these days of Pre-cell-phone, I had no options but to stay there and take what was coming... which I did.
Apparently, I must have looked like I'd been thru something horrible, because no one asked about the pig, they put blankets round me, kept shoving coffee mugs into my hands, and demanding I sit before I collapse. Amazing what explosive food will do to a person's nerves...
Turns out, the pig was "prepped" by other Marines who'd been told to fill the body cavity with rice and sew it up. No one thought to explain to them to soak the rice first, or that each tiny grain would expand to four times its size... or the use of para cord for sewing the pig back together once they had stuffed it.
End result was a pizza party in the middle of the forest, with seagulls, owls, and countless other birds swooping in to gather up pieces of pig and rice that festooned the trees around us, and a good time was had by all.
I still hate 'command attendance' but I have to admit, that was one for the record book.
