What is the greatest honor of your career?

On Satuday the 18th of March I will complete my 300th Military Funeral Honor detail. It has been by far the greatest honor of my career to be trusted with this sacred duty and as a junior enlisted. What has been the greatest honor of your career?

Seeing past soldiers of mine do good things in and out of the military it tells me I've made a difference in that persons life and for the army also hearing them say I was the best nco they ever had

I was able to pin both my trouble maker LCpls and two separate occasions. One was promoted to the rank of Sgt and the other SSgt years after I separated from the Marine Corps.

To me the greatest honor of my short career,was the ten months and fourteen days to be in the company of the men of my Company (A Company 3/8 Inf 4th Inf Div) during combat operations RVN 1966-67 that above all was my greatest honor.

SSG(P) Private RallyPoint Member I have had the honor doing/leading funeral details. I have have had the honor of leading various veterans reunion groups, to include WWII, Korea, and Vietnam Veterans. I have had the honor of leading Soldiers in Garrison and combat. I have had the honor of presenting many many awards to include too many Purple Hearts. But, my greatest honor was promoting Soldiers, reenlisting Soldiers, and giving the Oath of Office to Soldiers who specifically asked me to do that... and be part of their special days.

In my line of work I guess that would be some gigs that really meant something. In my case: participating in a tea ceremony dedicated to Okinawa's reversion to Japan (34th anniversary) and those who fell in the battle of Okinawa during WWII. I don't remember anymore if it was done by the current or previous Grandmaster of the Urasenke Tea Ceremony School. The retired grandmaster was a WWII kamikaze pilot who never got orders to fulfill a mission. Some time after the ceremony we received celebratory fans from the grandmaster as a token of thanks.

The other honorable thing I got to do, and counts as one of the hardest things by far I've done, was present the American flag to the widow of a WWII Navy Seabee.

Pulling a fellow Marine, who was also my roommate at the time, out of a fire during a training exercise gone wrong. I suffered minor smoke inhalation from poison oak but he suffered worse. Just proud that I was lucky enough to get him out in time.

Leaving the Gulf to come home to see my Daughter for the first time was 1.2was passing the ASVAB test to get in.I didn't graduate 9th grade and testing for a diploma type test.I did go on and get my GED at Camp Greaves,Korea.Getting in!

there are a few, serving 31 years for this country, going to Iraq with some of the best young people I ever met, but the one that really stands out was being part of an awards ceremony for a WW II vet that was finally recognized for his valor while serving in Europe

I have many. Few stand out. The day I officially commissioned, the day I graduated COT at 47, but the best head and shoulders above the rest...the day I swore in my first airman. I took that same oath around 6 times myself....yo administer it was an honor.

I spent 2 1/2 years performing military Honors for Veterans and fallen soldiers. I've done a total of 698 Funerals. That was my greatest honor. Just to say thank you for their service to their families.

I volunteered with others from our platoon to check out a mechanical ambush that was tripped at dawn in Quang Nam province in the Republic of Vietnam in Nov 1970. We got into a firefight with estimated 5 NVA troops. 1 KIA NVA, 1 WIA GI. 3 of us got our CIB that morning. Our LT pinned it on each man with handshake, then removed it and pinned on the next trooper. Proud as hell.

I just saw your question today SSG(P) Private RallyPoint Member. I have been honored many times and dishonored or at least people attempted to dishonor me at times.
1. I think my greatest honor was graduating from USMA, West point on May 28, 1980. I was surprised and honored when a Congressman in PA nominated me back in 1976. Many thought I would never be accepted and others proclaimed I would not graduate.
2. My greatest civilian honor occurred while I was a USAR Major, that was my marriage to my forever wife who is my darling wife.
3. Over my military career which began on November 11, 1974 and my uniformed service ended on May 28, 2008, my greatest honor was serving with and leading at times great soldiers who taught me many valuable lessons.
4. My next greatest honor was being promoted to LTC after two times being passed over in April 2000. That promotion enabled me to serve my nation after 9/11/2001 when I was mobilized to support the current operations, etc.
5. Two months before I transitioned to the retired reserve ranks, in March 2008 I traveled back to Fort Benning, GA to slap the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment scroll onto my oldest son's arm as he was inducted into the battalion.

Though neither was approved, knowing that my direct superiors know in their eyes I deserved it for the work I did on those two deployments, really makes me proud and I aspire to be that kind of leader...always going to bat for your people!

Three moments actually comet to mind.
From the time I was 8 years old I wanted to be a captain and command an infantry company.
In May of '78 I took command of an Infantry company and in October of that same year I was promoted to captain making that dream come true. I was very proud to have made that goal.
Commanding a company was probably the most rewarding of all my assignments.
One other event stands out as significant and that is the day I received the EIB.

September 18, 1972, being chosen as a Private E-2 to be part of the security detachment for the Air Force 25th Anniversary party in Stuttgart, Germany and being able to greet dignitaries at the front entrance to the hotel.

Another honor was being recommended for the Soldier's Medal after an incident on July 25, 1974. Didn't get the medal, but I did save a life.
