What is the highest rank that has ever worn the chevrons?

Our 1SG asked this on a board, and nobody I know, NCOs included, or google has been able to answer this correctly. Any help will be much appreciated!
Thank everyone for their responses! I gave the answer that GySgt Warren supplied, and that was the correct one that he wanted.
Captains, from 1821-1835 wore chevrons as their rank.

My guess is, it was more about how you answered then a "correct" answer.
Unless it is a question specific to your unit history you reasonable should know.
Or you have "One of them" sitting a board.

Thank you for your response SGM! Every one going through the board answered SGM of the Army confidently, and were all wrong. Afterwards, during the announcement of the winner, he told us to delve into the arcane lore of the Army, so he was looking to see if anybody knew the right answer.

Though I would not say a wrong answer as to who the current SMA is = delve into the arcane lore of the Army. More like, try and learn the basics before putting yourself in a position you know those basics will be tested. If I were your Sqd leader, PSG or 1SG, Id be embarrassed. Its not like the SMA has recently changed over..SMA Dailey has been in position since January 2015.
That said, we all make mistakes,,,,someone memorizing a list of the last 10 SMA, or all 15 could easily mix up a name I suppose......lol, kind of,,,not the current one...that is kind of important.
Out of curiosity, if not SMA Dailey, who did the board attendees say was the SMA?

So, it wasn't a matter of who the SMA was. The answer he was looking for was a specific rank. He wanted to know what the highest rank that has ever worn the chevrons. GySgt Warren was correct. He was looking for the rank of Captain, from 1821 - 1835.

SGM Erik Marquez I agree, there is always one of them who want to get a Soldier because they got got. That is a question that no reasonable Soldier would know the answer to

Douglas MacArthur, when he was a Brigadier General in WW1, wore both wound chevrons and Overseas service chevrons.
I will talk to my 1SG and will report back.

Black Jack Pershing would have had at least the overseas service chevron from World War 1 and out ranked MacArthur. Black Jack was the first General of the Armies.
