Always has been. From the time of heralds and town criers to today, "news" has been used to promote a point of view. That's why I laugh when I hear people attack "Faux News" while clinging to equally biased sources broadcast from all of the networks. Anyone seeking reality must use multiple sources. Like a sculptor, they need to view their subject from all angles, all points of view. Sadly, it's getting hard to find multiple points of view these days, at least among the major sources. "Journalists" are now bred on college campuses where they are all indoctrinated with the same point of view. Ultimately, readers must depend upon common sense to cull out the more obvious lies, those things that don't pass the smell test. And, they must recognize that they too have a point of view that colors their perceptions. As for me, I used news aggregaters to point me at the major stories and then pursue more in depth detail. My favorite aggregater is InkaBinka
http://inkabinka.com/

InkaBinka: Visual news summaries in 20 seconds. Sometime in the mid 20th century there was a concerted effort to introduce the kinds of journalistic ethics we claim we want, but the last couple decades as we have sought out views the reinforce our own thinking (hence the rise of the political news blogs), the market place, doing what it does, has been responsive to this in both the new media and old.

Add to this the blurring of the line between news gathering and news commentary, and it's hard to get a straight "just the facts ma'am" news outlet.

Sometimes your best bet is to look at a reported topic from a right leaning news organization and from a left leaning news organization. Between the two you can not only see both sides of an issue, but can start to fill in missing pieces that each side may omit. Whether or not you think a news source is biased often depends on if it has the same bias as you do.

What many people don't realize is that bias is displayed more by what they chose not to report then by the tone of their actual reporting. Its amazing how many US and world news stories I've read in the British newspapers (Daley Mirror/Daley Mail) that aren't even covered by American News sources. This is often less due to bias as it is the imperative to stay "interesting" and therefore make money

If you want a good overall idea of what is going on in the world, it takes some effort. The best thing you can do is monitor a wide variety of sources from different slants. I like to counter MSNBC with FOX News, ABS/NBC/CBS/PBS with BBC/Sky News. I also like to read the French newspaper Le Monde because the French often have a completely different spin on things.
