I was in a CAAT platoon (Combined Anti-Armor Team). Tow missiles cost a few thousand a piece so the majority of our ranges were .50 cal and MK-19 ranges. You have to love a piece of machinery that can launch a grenade 1,000 meters down range. SFMF

My shipmates. We could handle most things and improvise to come up with workable solutions, but it was knowing the support system and sheer force of us that made it an awesome dynamic not able to be recreated in civilian life. I miss the JSOC operative system, which paired me with other service members that we had to trust and depend upon without prior meetings. The Tropospheric Scatter System to relay communication signals a very long distance. We bounced the signals off of the troposphere from Mt Pateras Greece to Karmasel Turkey, Iraklion Crete and Mt Vergine Italy. Satellites made this obsolete but for a while we were the kings of communications!

My M-1 carbine in Korea because it was small, light and easy to handle just like my Ruger 10-22 rifle today. I carried it with my 30 caliber machine gun by myself when required. I can hit anything with my 22 Ruger (rapid fire or not), it would have made an excellent weapon when I served.

The 81mm Mortar System. Something about having my best friend as the assistant gunner, and myself as gunner manipulating 50 or so pounds together, while trying to keep bubbles level and the sight on target is magical. When that first round drops into the tube, and the baseplate sinks into the ground, the only thing better is seeing the smoke coming from the target.

As an amphibiious tractor driver and crewchief in Vietnam for 18 months .. a vehicle that can be driven ANYWHERE under ANY conditions would be my top choice for a system I used in the military. As a civiliian lover of offroad excursions there have been times that I wished I had an amtrac so I could reach a spot I saw no other way to get there.

There's actually only one weapon, or perceived weapon in the AF and I never used it because if it fails, it can never regain power. The weapon used most is fear. Constant threat of losing your job or Award or God forbid the almighty, more important than life promotion. I had that fear when I first started, maybe two years in. Once you get over it, they have nothing. They can't threaten you anymore. The real power that very few people know how to utilize is true loyalty that is actually earned and has zero to do with rank. Imagine me as a capt mopping the floor along with an airman. Yeah, I got some weird looks from both sides which is truly disgusting. I know who I am and what I stand for. If someone relies on their rank for respect, they're nothing but a moron.

I miss using the M 16, many hated it but it had to be cared for like a girl friend, constant attention. Being a Combat Medic I didn't have many opportunities to use it but it saved my life and many others the times I did. I slept with it and carried it 24 / 7 during my 11 months in the field. I miss working with the M4. I learned to appreciate shooting a rifle in the Marine Corps and I actually had a secondary MOS where I was able to teach others all aspects of the M4 or M16 and it was my favorite part of service. I also enjoyed shooting the Beretta M9, which is no longer used but it was what we had and it was fun teaching people that as well.

I miss the radios/comms units. I miss talking to my brothers and sisters. Some gone, some here but we lost touch. I miss the familiar voice on the other side. The support that came when it was requested. The reassurance that help was on the way. The jokes... the fart sounds... the brevity that lightened the mood when we were deep in our mission. I long to know the challenge and password to get back on the net with my brethren.

I was an intelligence analyst, but I spent most of my career with infantry, artillery, tankers, and scout units. I fired lots of weapons during my career, but the M-16/ A-2 with a 203 attachment was the best. I carried a M-9 and M-16 both during deployments, but there is no way I was grabbing my 9 before My M-16. It was my lifeline, and I qualified expert everytime. I loved night fire and watching the tracers fly.

My BIDS (Bio Integration Detection System) ! Being one of the first teams of its kind, taught us how to work together to identify and fix equipment that was made to protect ourselves and each other. We prepared the labs and ourselves for deployment. In doing so, trusting our hard work and understanding the responsibilities, requirements and putting trust in ourselves to carry out our missions. Since our teams didn't have a chance to deploy, we at least managed to help rewrite some of the manuals, and corrected items to improve the system and make it better for the next time it would be used.

I retired in 2018. I was a Culinary Specialist. My weapons were not used to fight but to support the war fighter. My weapon of choice was my Flatt Grill in the Galley. When I would make special items like Chicken Alfredo or Pepperoni pizza on the grill the warfighters I supported would absolutely love it and would be fuiled to fight. I most miss using the M-60 machine gun.
In combat it was the most effective in keeping the enemy at bay and it was so accurate at very long range.

What I miss the most and I'm not exactly remembering what the acronym was for this system but it is a C.R.O.W system. An unmanned turret that I controlled in the back seat of a up armored hummvi with a joystick and the screen in front of me had night vision, thermal imaging, the whole nine lol! Yeah and of course we stuck the .50 cal on that awesome system!

A Backpack Radio as I used in Vietnam in '67, '68, and '69. That was necessary for calling in
barrages from planes and ships as well as ground support. Without that, the USA would not have been able to help the Vietnamese people at all.

I miss the MREs (or Long Range Patrol packets of food) which were a helluva lot better than the C-Rations we carried around the bush during the Vietnam War. Just add water and you were eating a meal fit for a king or a "grunt!"

What I miss the most is the boots. The military was and is special to me and hanging up my boots was a tough decision. The military system I miss the most would be the sound of an F-15 screaming over your head. I was always starstruck at the sheer loudness and speed. It never got old.

I miss the teamwork. As a crew you have 1 mission, and everyone on the crew has that 1 mission. There may be different tasks, but 1 mission. I am currently working at a Detention Center, and we have a couple of veterans on staff. The cohesiveness of the veterans vs the other staff, you can definitely tell a difference.

The Machine Gun 240B. It's by far the most lethal crew served weapon for a Light Infantry Squad and gives you power and control of a situation found nowhere in the civilian world. The free ammunition on the range was super cool too!!!

Shot gun it was made to look very offensive and the quality of the weapon was excellent. Was assigned a shot gun during roit control in Panama. It worked well the visualization of that weapon pointing out of the shields made a lot of those college students step back with that look of "Don't shoot"

M1 Carbine. Much easier to carry than the M14. I left Vietnam just before the M16 was issued so I never got to fire it. We used the M1 at Camp Geiger (near LeJeune) during AIT and then I qualified with it once during my time at New River Air Facility. My MOS was actually 0221 (Air Intelligence) but that one wasn't available, so I had to use 0231 (Ground Intelligence).

AFATDS & charts n darts.. initially I hated the thought of having to learn both of these, I wasn't the best student in highschool and specifically asked the recruiter not to put me anywhere that would have me in a classroom type environment... MK19 on top of my Stryker controlling it with rws (remote weapon system) as long as you knew what you were doing it was such an amazing weapon and the M249 would be a close second I humped it all over Kandahar Province with typically 1500 rounds which weighed a lot but completely worth it when you needed it

I miss using the battle buddy system the most. Its not technically a system as in a computer system for the military but when your deployed its a system where you constanly have support. You have another member of your team that you can connnect with an talk to. When you get home everyone branches out and you lose the battle buddy system and it makes life harder. You get thrown into the real world where you have to deal with real life drama, bills, society and everyday people. You dont have your battle anymore to turn to and talk about the hardships of what your going through like you did and life seems so much harder. During deployment all you have to worry about is getting shot at, doing your job, and the auto payments that come out of your accountant that pay your bills.

I miss using the thermal imaging on the m1A1 Tank and the night vision goggles.

The OH-58A/C Scout Helicopter. You didn't fly this helicopter, you strapped it on! You were part of the machine. If you leaned far enough left or right, it would turn. It was very nimble and you could do things just by thinking about it. Plus, we often flew single-pilot so it was all you. No co-pilot to back you up or talk on the radio or read a checklist. You flew, talked, wrote stuff down, tuned radios, threw switches, everything. (I dropped a few pencils out the side!) And yes, we mostly flew without the doors. Like a flying Jeep! No GPS, no 3-axis autopilot, no flight management system, or stability augmentation system, and no moving map display. You had a map, a compass, and your mark 1 eyeballs! Man, that was flying!

I miss the M-14. It was a tank that could be taken through dirt, sand, mud and water, yet always worked, unlike the M-16, which was like taking a corvette off-road racing.

Loved the M-16 but being a MP the 1911 was our bread and butter. I miss that thing. I don't need one but I sure do want one!
