I had a couple buddies in Germany with military appropriate names, we were all SGTs so just think of their name with SGT in front; Slaughter, and Major.
It was a kick when Major would answer the phone "SGT Major, how can I help you" and folks would say "oh wrong number and hang up, or he'd call for a piece of equipment and someone would drop what they were doing and haul butt over to the shop and get a puzzled look and say you aren't the Sergeant Major, and he'd tell them he never said he was THE Sergeant Major just that he WAS Sergeant Major.
It was all good fun till someone told The SGM, for some reason he failed to see any humor in it.

Later became a police officer after he got out, so he was Officer Justice.

When I went to boot camp, General R.E. Barrow had just retired as CMC (Commandant of the Marine Corps). Boy was I drilled for the first couple of weeks - just to make sure I did not expect special (better) conditions than everyone else.

Ah, here we go, my first BN XO was overweight and was named MAJOR PIGG. Then I believe our intelligence guy at BN level was CPT JUSTICE. I saw a SGT CHRISTMAS once.

My favorite are the leftover clones from the cloning program in the 1980's. The Army conducted a cloning program in the 1980's for Infantry Units. Each cloned Soldier was named SGT RIVERIA, I'll bet there are a few left serving now in Infantry Units with that same name. Seemed at least one Infantry Company always had at least one SGT RIVERIA issued. When confronted they would always deny they were a clone and would go off on some long boring explanation on how it was a common last name where they came from.........yeah right, and Army CID doesn't plant spies in units either. :)

On TDY to Cam Ranh, Vietnam I visited an orphanage and there was an airman there whose name tag sewn on his fatigues really surprised me. It said QUEER.

Had a guy in my flight in basic whose last name was Sweetsir. (pron. 'sweets-er) I don't which confused people more when he said his name, when he said name only and they thought he was saying "Sweet, sir." or when he said "Sweetsir, sir."
Another guy's name was Watson Paul (or Paul, Watson). His name was always, or at least usually, correct on paperwork, but someone was always trying to tell him that it had his name backwards and he would have to explain.

When the 9th ID was activated at Fort Lewis, Washington in 1971, I was a 2LT assigned to the Division Headquarters where I met 1LT Marvile and Major Major.

1LT Marvile was promoted and on his first duty day as a new Captain, his wife dropped him off outside the command entrance where he jumped out of the car wearing blue tights with a red cape and oversized Captain bars on his shoulders (tin foil on cardboard about 7" square). On another note, as a young NCO in the 58th Signal Bn, my platoon sergeant was PSG Fear and the first sergeant was 1SG Love. We used to say that once you felt the Fear you could report to the orderly room and get some Love. The Battalion Commander was LTC Hawk and the Adjutant was CPT Drum.

Look at my last name, I have had more things thrown at it than I can recall. I had 1SG when I was a private who would ask me what the weather was going to be before we went on an FTX. Immediately after that conflict in the middle east in 1991, If I heard the term "Is your first name Desert?" after reading my name tape, I heard it a million times. My mom, who worked as an Executive Secretary for the Air Force told me this true story. There was an Airman Basic named General Jones who called Flight Ops at Randolph AFB, said "This is General Jones" and asked if they had any planes scheduled to go to McCord AFB. Since they thought it was a "General" calling, they created a flight. The next day, this slick sleeve airman shows up. They were all shocked, but since the plane was scheduled, the pilots briefed, and the flight plan filed, they took him anyway.

In 1CD Divarty we had a SGT/E-5 Major in our Commo Shop. It was funny every time he ever used the phone he would say, "this is SGT Major and I would like X,Y, or Z" he would almost always be told yes. A few times they would ask "SGM Who?" Then the long name explanation would begin.

It is protocol (or was) within hospital units to refer to non-Eagled physicians as Doctors rather than by rank to avoid confusion as to who was in charge, since a field grade nurse often worked with Captain docs... you can imagine the ribbing that CPT Love got. Spc Butcher here. I was a grunt. I sharpened knives, etools, anything metal. Carries a knife you could shave your face with. I liked to stare at cherry privates while sharpening something. For hours. Without talking. My knife has been featured in safety briefings. More than once. One guy touched it and needed stitches. In Iraq, I charged 2 packs of smokes to sharpen a knife. Stateside it was $20. I remember when smart phones came out. Bullshitting sitting in the company bay, everybody on their phones. Not me. I'm sharpening shit. Never got smoked for being on a phone.

Once, I was watching a 100% layout in Iraq (our 6th in 7 days), so I was sitting there shapening my Etool. Biggest dickhead SGM I ever had walks up. "Hey there soldier! What are you doing there?"
*snaps to parade rest* "Sharpening my Etool SGM!"
"What are you doing that for?"
"So it's better to kill motherfuckers with SGM!"
"Hooah! Carry on."
Convinced that is the most positive interaction anyone ever had with that man.

Not in the military, but knew a kid named Steven Buttcheese. Played against them in pee-wee football. Over 20 years ago. Only heard it announced over the loudspeaker once. Can never forget. Lol.

Until, of course, you use military format, and you call out the last the last name first, first name last- then he became “John Wayne”! The DS’s kept assigning the poor guy all the tough assignments in BCT and AIT. Unfortunately, my friend lost track of him after AIT, so he didn’t know if the trend to give him tough jobs continued!

I use to get a little bit of flack for my maiden name being Brashere, because the tape on my chest spelled Bras here. However, nothing holds a candle to my married name. I am currently Specialist Boener (pronounced boner). I am very confident with my new name and enjoy the rise I get out people saying or not saying my name. The jokes are usually entertaining if done with good taste. The key to "unique" names is time and place.

I knew a Captian America and a Captain Crazy while at Camp Lejeune. Captain Crazy’s actual name was Crazythunder. He was Native American, but preferred to shorten it. The two captains, America and Crazy were to outgoing and incoming OOD one evening. They were performing turnover rounds of all the guard posts. A new PFC on watch at the armory challenged them in the darkness, the two Captiains responded with the password and the young PFC told them to advance and be recognized. They stepped forward and said “Captian America”; “Captain Crazy” - When the Sergent of the Guard got there, the PCF had both Captains on the deck with their hands behind their backs. He thought they were just being a couple of wiseguys f-ing with him.

I went to Naval Hospital Corps School with a SN Sample. He couldn’t wait to graduate and become HN Sample. Plus my Marines in 2/2 would talk about a girl on their MEU named Slutski

I once simultaneously worked with a SPC Sargeant, SGT Sargeant, and a SSG Sergeant. That was interesting to say the least.

I knew a car salesman that worked at the Honda dealer where I was trying to get a car. His name was Major Peavy. I called him to find out about my car. I asked to speak with Major Peavy, he came to the ph. I go " what's up man, is my car ready". My 1SG heard me and called me in to his office upon my call ending. I had to explain who he was and show him his business card that said Major Peavy, Sales Consultant.

It was fun trying to explain and then seeing the look on my 1SG's face.

When I was stationed at Camp Roberts California in 1966 I had a Lt named General Williams as my Battery Cmdr. He always answerd the phone As Lt General Williams speaking.

I knew of a Navy Airman who was not all that happy about making 3rd Class Petty Officer, ABE3. His name was Pinto and he was an ABEAN, arresting gear technician. On the organizational board in his shop, his name was listed as "Pinto, ABEAN", he enjoyed the word play.
