What is the need for a 110 GT score? Why is it important?

Being in the army for such a short time, I’ve heard the importance of having a 110 GT score. Why is so much stock placed into this, and what does it provide for the SM?

Pretty much every job worth having requires a 110 GT. That's about as straightforward as you'll get.

A 110 is pretty easy to get with some studying and following the guidelines of BSEP course.
A 110 doesn't do anything for you. A better question is what requires a 110? Commissioning, several job positions, broadening assignments, and units require a 110 GT, and it's not waivable. But if you don't plan on commissioning, or applying to a special duty that requires a certain GT, then it has no effect on you.

My highest score was 126... 114 out of high school..I only had 9th grade math and English... but the lesson is how you work with your score... I have a high IQ
.. But a very low EQ, thus major behavioral and mental problems... resulting in CPL rank after 16 good years in a span of 30 years.. all honorable service...barely at times... I also sudied the ASVAB and used the ARCO study guide to raise my score..The lowest score I've seen in the Army NG is 17.

As Mr. John C stated it opens a lot of doors. I know several guys that are taking classes to try and improve their score so they can attend WOC or OCS or do a re-class.

It's a mark on a yardstick.

The military figures if you can hit certain benchmarks, you might do well in certain roles. It's no guarantee that any given service member with a high GT score will equate to excellence in whatever role requires a high score, but they probably have corelating evidence that shows one is more likely to do well if they can earn a high score; hence the benchmark.
