Every Sunday night Dad would spread newspapers on the floor and dump every pair of shoes worn the previous week. I shined 'em all. In basic I had the best looking boots every day, "Lead By Example". I was the Trainee Field First and hand picked 4 of my own squad leaders. One was "Spud" James, son of General Chappie James, first black man to achieve the rank of 4 Star in the AIR FORCE. The other two sons had fallen in line and joined the AF. One was already a Major, the other a CPT. "Spud" made up with his Dad on phone calls. One night when Spud called at an agreed upon time they transferred his call to Chappie. He and Spud's Mom were at the WH, having dinner with President Nixon and Patricia. Duck L'Orange was the main entree. I was duly impressed.<br />When Spud's Dad came to Graduation Day from BCT he out-ranked the Post Commander at Ft. Dix. Sure I&#39;ll sleep in when I can, but on normal workdays I&#39;m up and about early. I attribute this to my days flying FB-111s. Our standard training schedule launched a three ship formation at 0645. That meant that preflight briefings started around 0430 and you had to be at the aircraft for preflight by 0515. Almost 10 years of that schedule tends to get you accustomed to being up early and I never seemed to break the habit.
