What is the process to transition from Active Duty to AGR with an MOS that AGR doesn't have?

Because I’m not very fond of the Regular Army. I feel it would be better to be in AGR or even Reserves.

Got it. I think the best route for you is to look at joining a Reserve unit, USAR or NG, and then look at going AGR from there. Always remember that almost half of the AGR are assigned to USAREC, or better known as recruiting.

Roger. I am aware of that. Unfortunately, thats not the job I’m looking forward to but its a start. Like I said, I still have 2 years. Alot can change in that time; I’m just trying to get all the info and guidance now while its still early. I appreciate your comments. Thanks.

SPC Nash, I can assure you that 12B AGR positions exist in the NG. Both your RNCO and training NCO positions at an engineer company will be 12B/12N positions. The admin NCO will be a 42A and the supply NCO will be a 92Y. That being said, the PA ARNG is in the top 3 or 4 largest National Guard states in the US and we have (I believe) only one EN BN, with two true EN companies. Even with BN HQ 12 series positions, you are looking at only approximately 6 to 8 AGR positions for engineers in the entire state.

You are able to hold AGR MOS immaterial positions such as recruiting, IG office, BLC instructor, etc. My advice would be to reclassify prior to your ETS into something favorable to the AGR world (ie 42A or 92Y). Every unit has a supply sergeant and an admin NCO. BN and BDE also has an S1 and S4 shop where these positions are needed. Even if you can’t pick up something off of AD, you will have a good feeder MOS into the AGR system once you are in the USAR or ARNG.

I was thinking about just going into reserve and finishing college...then trying to find an AGR slot. Because I know it will be challenging to jump straight into AGR from Active Duty; especially as a 12B (Combat Engineer)
