This way if anyone says anything you are covered. I number of years ago someone had a great idea that we all needed to wear berets. I was undergoing laser treatments on my face and my dermatologist told me to stay out of the sun. (not the easiest thing in our line of work) I asked him to write a profile directing me to wear a hat with a brim. I was the envy of the Army! lol (everyone hated the beret and I got to wear a PC) I framed that profile. Anyways, get a profile and keep it on you. Ensure it specifically states that you need to wear suspenders. I don't know how that stands with the regs but nobody has said anything to them. To me it seems like if your command is okay with it, it should not be a problem. I found a pair in the post exchange or your favorite Tactical mail order catalog. I had to get them for the large fluctuation in my weight during deployments. Ive only seen one guy ever wear them. I think the easiest COA would be to run this up your NCO support channel. If you look in AR 670-1 is says the Commander can make uniform modifications to suit the mission. If your 1SG and CO are on board I doubt you'll catch any flak. It's the medical guidelines and will have any 'exceptions to policy' including clothing.. like to wear tennis shoes for a foot profile. I know suspenders were never really 'outlawed' with BDU's because, if you could find them, there was a time when OD green suspenders were a supplement to the belt in both fatigues and BDU's. The army actually had a line item number for suspenders. If I remember correctly it states that the suspenders cannot be seen while wearing the uniform. There is no color stipulation.
