But the real time limit is how long you are willing to wait for follow up medical care to be authorized by a completed LOD and Notice of Eligibility (NOE). So get it in the week it happened. There is no time limit to file. Typically, the medical clinic on base initiates the LOD; sends it to the unit to complete. All of your treatment and medical expenses are already covered by the Army - including unlimited sick leave or recovery time as directed by the Army doctor.... your duty status is covered .... there’s nothing for you “ to do” except get better and return to full duty. If that is not possible then paperwork or the proceeds will start for your discharge. The veterans administration/hospital will then assume all aspect of your treatment and/or compensation: If the medical facility never initiates the LOD and you eventually leave the Army through retirement or time served you can or will do paperwork during out processing that will cover past injuries or illnesses. You will be given an opportunity to file with the veterans administration at that time and receive any further medical treatment or compensation as allowed or needed. The DD2173 is an application and needs the state surgeon signature on this. The LOD is usually only for compos 2 and 3, but if extenuating circumstances exist such as a DUI, it is filled out for the AD as well.
