One evening, the CSM and Bn CO were the only ones to show up for dinner. The next morning they decreed that everyone one in the battalion, officers, NCOs and junior enlisted would eat, as a minimum, breakfast and lunch in the mess hall every day. The very first morning, before taking a bite of the rubbery eggs, rock-hard biscuits, or powdered bacon (it was cooked completely dry and crumbled into a sand-like consistency), I opened a cartoon of milk, took a big gulp and threw up right there in the mess hall.
