From the 1930’s till a period up to 1980 both parties were more centrist and governed as such but today this generally is nonexistent in today’s current representatives. Let’s look at the facts of both parties and how we have arrived to this current point of an extreme left and right mentality with no common ground in between. (Jan 7th wonk blog)
The Democratic Party of the United States is the one of the oldest political parties in the world. The Democratic Party of today was formed in the 1830s from former factions of the Democratic-Republican Party. It was built by Martin Van Buren who was President Andrew Jackson’s head advisor during his presidency. Martin Van Buren would later be elected the 8th President of the United States. He will always be known as the man who built the modern Democratic Party in American politics. The Democratic Party was always known as the major supporter for farmers, city workers, and new immigrants arriving into America.
The Republican Party is the second oldest party in America today. It began in a little schoolhouse in Ripon, Wisconsin, in 1854. A small group of dedicated abolitionists gathered to fight the expansion of slavery, and they gave birth to a Party dedicated to freedom and equal opportunity. The name “Republican” was chosen, alluding to Thomas Jefferson’s Democratic-Republican Party and conveying a commitment to the Inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Under President Lincoln they became known as the Grand Old Party. The Republican Party is known for its rural interests and values, which tend to be more religious, patriotic and family oriented.
Over the last 30 years trends in American values have shifted which has created a gap in the republicans and democrats in gender, age, race and class divides. Nearly most of these changes have occurred during President Bush and President Obama administrations. Both parties have been critical of each other for not standing up for traditional values. These statistics are based on Pew research poll showing in 2012 that 71% of the republicans and 58% of the democrats say their parties have not done well in this aspect of governing our country. The democrats historically were based in agricultural America with power base in the south. But with the switch in political party viewpoints the democrats have developed a more urban attitude and the GOP shifted to rural interests and values.
As Americans we have come to dislike both parties, the media and the political action groups have played a major role in creating this discord. The American voter National Election Survey that is taken every two years has shown a trend that exists in partisan social issues which puts pressure on lawmakers not to compromise. In the last 20 years each party has fewer members of congress who live in Washington D.C, it is because is they were likely to become more moderate and would cross party lines and interact more socially. These changes where instituted by Newt Gingrich (Speaker of the House) during the Bill Clinton Presidency in 1995, which creating a devastating divide amongst the governing parties. The second major change he implemented was a seniority system for committee chairmen he eliminated this process which in the past worked thru bipartisanship. Chairmen and ranking members were now appointed by assigned party leadership with commitment and loyalty to the party. This made most congressmen and women stay with their party lines so they would not buck the systematic leadership in charge. Gaining majority vote was the priority no longer becoming a united vote for the common good of the American governance and its citizens.
A recent Rasmussen poll (Oct 21, 2014) showed that Americans are weary of big government and voters do not trust either party in congress or the senate. The poll showed that 48% percent of Republicans and 40 % percent of Democrats agree that neither party can be considered the party of the people; a large amount of independent and unaffiliated feels the same. But despite these numbers and numerous other polls two thirds of voters will not participate in elections because they think the rules of elections are rigged. And here is another alarming number only 29% percent think their congressmen and women deserves to be reelected. With independent voters doubling since 1987 to 2012 these statistics support that neither party has embraced the concept of a partisanship decline.
In my summarization I have learned many valuable view points from mutable sources within my research. The statistics are there and the census amongst numerous sources points towards the obvious the parties are divided and not united. There are so many reasons why this is affecting each party as the trends occurred when either a change in the leadership or new policy’s that were was initiated.
And I must state once again that the Democrats and Republicans are both guilty of succumbing to creating this divide with the interests of the American public being put aside. The proof is continued failed policies both at home and abroad, not being able to balance the budget, numerous government shutdowns, and illegal immigration not resolved and allowing the media to influence the government thru owner based political affiliations and bias donors to either party’s political campaigns.
In my final concussion both parties were formed because each joined together for a common believe in values, religion and freedom from an overreaching government. Our Nation in its darkest moments survived because bipartisanship worked when both parties put together their ideological theories and listened to their constituents both in Washington and within their polling districts. Moving forward I feel term limits should be instituted for both the congress and the senate. This would create a major change in how the outside influences such as the PACS, lobbyists and foreign interests will no longer become ensconced in each party’s ability to govern our nation. The discords of the two party systems will continue to spiral leaving our nation in despair if relationships are not repaired. We must rise as citizens within our polling districts to create awareness and let the Democrats and Republicans know that the status quo is no longer acceptable. I believe if our parties unite under the constitution and bring admiration back to the American public our democracy will survive. I refer to this famous quote from 1776 to finalize my argument on this subject and reflect on how our government can unite,” E pluribus Unum” Out of many one has emerged a single people and nation.
