What is your best advice for someone who is about to deploy?

I assume that you are already over there, wherever that may be, and this may be a pointless post on my part, but I will say it for the benefit of those who may read afterward. Bring some cash with you. At least $150. People will be selling a lot of things they have: lamps, fridges, TVs, etc. You may not need them, but they will make the next little stint of time a little more comfortable.

Also, on the flip side, don't blow $20 on a lamp when you can very well get it for $5. Don't spend $200 on a fridge when you and your roommate can go halfsies and you can save a little bit of money. Don't spend $850 on a TV that is larger than one you would have back stateside. Be a little conservative. You can spend a little bit to make life comfortable, but don't go crazy with the money you have. You can bank a lot of cash if you play it smart.

Oh, and stay safe, of course.

It depends on the individual, but make sure you have a trustworthy person in the rear to handle your finances. This is imperative!!! I have had too many Soldiers rely on an untrustworthy person only to come back to insurmountable debt. Remember that you will return a different person, also those back here will be different as well. Keep this in mind upon return! Also, depending on where you are being deployed, you need to keep your head in the game in country. Problems at home could put your comrades in danger! always keep the mission in your head! These are the only things I can really give you without knowing who you are! GOOD LUCK!!!
