You meet that right group of people and that'd be a wrap. I met some of my best friends in the military and shared some great memories with them. For the most part they love the military here in Texas. We get treated with respect and we are appreciated. There are discounts most places you go. Free park here and there. Toll roads are free. Jobs are plenty thanks to Vet preference. That is my fav aspect(s). The camaraderie.
2. Medical. Had 3 kids born in military hospitals at the total cost of $69 (the hospital meals).
3. The travel.
Never was a big commissary or exchange shopper in CONUS. Mostly did it for the convenience. Lived very close to MCRD/NTC San Diego for a few years. In Florida we had a Winn-Dixie a block from our apartment, so did most of our shopping there instead of a 30+ minute drive to the AFB. There's nothing like running down Ardennes on Ft. Bragg and Battallion Ave on Ft. Hood and hearing highly motivated, highly dedicated Soldiers sounding off loud and proud on a company run! I just love it! Not to mention pass and review ceremonies, etc. My wife went to the 82nd Airborne review during All-American week during this deployment, and she absolutely loved it. Every time I see, or participate in one, I feel a sense of pride knowing that I'm standing tall, looking good, and that I oughtta be in Hollywood. For instance, next month the USO is bringing Sesame Street to the base and I think that's a great experience for my young daughters.
