What is your favorite military bugle call to hear?

Everybody who has spent time on a military installation has heard bugle calls - either by an actual bugler or a recorded bugle call. Some calls woke us up [First Call]; accompanied the raising of the National Colors [Reveille]; told us it was time to eat [Mess Call]; announced the retiring of the National Colors [Retreat]; told us to turn to out the lights in squad rooms of old [Tattoo]; told us to go back to our rooms [Call to Quarters]; and go to sleep (Taps) or remember the recently departed.
Many bases, posts, camps and stations only used some of these bugle calls each day; but, a few used many or most - especially West Point in my experience. Those of us who spent time on Parade fields heard Assembly, Attention and Adjutant's Call played many times. I can't remember if a bugle call coincided with the Commander's command to initiate pass in review.

I have heard more bugle calls played that I can possible remember. The most I heard was when I was a cadet at West Point when I think every bugle call was played by actual buglers including the firing of one of the cannons on the plan at retreat. My favorite calls were tattoo and taps. Mess call was usually welcomed because it reminded me it was time to eat. Since I am a night person, First Call was not my favorite.

They are all the same for me with the exception of Taps. Nothing harder than having to say goodbye to a brother or sister. If I never had to hear it again all the better, but I am sure I will hear it again.

The last time I heard it I was burying my Step-Father. Rest in peace TSGT Gary Fisher. The Air Force lost a good one that day.

LTC Stephen F. I'm not gonna lie I am about to sound really "Pro Navy/Pro Military" right now but, I live in base housing and one of the things I love the most is hearing Reveille and Taps going off every morning and evening. Hearing the formations singing cadence during group runs. Well these things fill me full of pride and make my heart swell. The greatest part is my children are raised around it and know how to respect it.

Respect starts at home and when I have family come visit, I love explaining to them what Reveille and Taps is and why it is so important. Photo comment: This is actual homework that my daughter did. If a 7 year can get it why can't grow adults?

LTC Stephen F., Reveille, Retreat, To the Colors and Taps are still played at Fort McClellan, AL. I agree with SFC Private RallyPoint Member, SGT William Howell and CAPT Kevin B. regarding Taps. It's almost impossible to not be reflective when Taps is sounded.
However, I've always enjoyed participating in and listening to a retreat ceremony. Many forget that there are two bugle calls associated with the ceremony. The first call is Retreat with the formed unit at parade rest. The flag is actually lowered while To the Colors is sounded, with the unit at attention and present arms.

As a Chaplain, I did not at first like hearing Taps because it unleashed a lot of emotion; but I began to see that this was a necessary part of the healing process. And it is a profound way of showing respect to departed veterans. I'm very grateful for Buglers Across America. Live Taps should be played if at all possible.

My favorite (as far as its musicality) is Tattoo. As a young Marine, I became fascinated with bugle/trumpet calls and their history and was able to learn that the different branches within the U.S. Army each had their own musical calls, with each branch having its own instrument (either a bugle or a trumpet). There were not only the daily service calls (first call, reveille, sick call, mess call, mail call, To the Color, Retreat, Tattoo, &c, - calls that regulated a soldier's day), but also drill calls (about all that is left of these calls are Attention and Carry On), calls that told a soldier how to dress (e.g., Overcoats) and when to do it (Dress Parade), as well as calls for meetings (1st Sergeant's call and Adjutant's call), and tactical calls for the battlefield. By the late 19th c., all the calls had been amalgamated into one set of calls for the entire Army. The Navy added calls for its own purposes. And eventually, as military and naval bases became too big and sprawling for buglers to be able to be heard, electronic systems carried the call (while the trade of field musician fell to the wayside). Every company used to have its bugler (and earlier, its drummer) to play calls. That doesn't exist today. I like it when bugle calls are heard on bases - I think it's a great continuation of tradition, and one that should be done more often..

LTC Stephen F., the first time I heard Taps was in the Boy Scouts, when I got to 7 grade I chose to join the band and learn how to play the cornet. This in turn lead to my dad asking me to learn Taps on camp outs. It's really moving to here as it drifts across the area. But the emotional part came when someone asked my dad if I would play it a a memorial service for a member of the VFW who had passed. They were meeting in an old movie theater, I went to the area where there had once been the projectors. As the ceremony ended I was given my signal and played it, from that moment I truly understood what it ment. Today I always seem to get something in my eyes when I hear it.

Great question. I've heard Retreat more than others. My wife and I were just talking about the practice of stopping your vehicle, exiting it, and saluting when Retreat is played. But Taps is the saddest and is the epitome of the call to service that our Military obeys.

I don't remember bugle calls except in port. The Bos'n pipe got annoying. Being in the Navy meant that you had a berthing area that was usually different that your work area BUT you got to stand watches a various times of the day and night. If you pulled a mid watch you hated Reveille because you were entitled to some extra sleep. That worked well.

As a former Cadet at Bordentown military Institute, Bordentown, NJ from 0600 to 2200 the activities of the day were all signaled by bugle calls played over a campus wide speaker system. The bugle calls helped add as an audible time system for the days activities, 1st call You had five minutes to be somewhere, 2nd You were either there or late which meant One hour of Penalty tours in Your free time. Miss the formation or activity that was 5 hours of penalty tours. We were very familiar with what each bugle call was played for. To this day I've always made it a point to not only be on time for everything but early. The bugle calls then actually told You what the activity was and it became second nature to respond and know the different calls. Hearing to the Colors or the National Anthem still means a lot to me, perhaps that is My favorite !

"Retreat" and "To The Colors" - When I was stationed in Italy, this was used in lieu of other bugle calls for some reason ( I don't recall ever hearing the National Anthem or Taps), but its liveliness always made me very proud.

Me; “I can’t hear you, Airman!”
I don’ymt hear anything from them for a few days.. so I took it they were not resigning..,I expected to see them at next call up for a detail.. I was not the NCOIC but have been a detail NCO for funerals, assemblies, Retreats, Retirements. ..
I got a phone call from one Airman’s 1SGT.. The Airman didn’t tell the whole
Story.. He invited the NCOIC and myself to meet with him and the Airman.. well I
Was there and so was he and the Airman..
My NCOIC didn’t get there right away.. ..
The Airman told his side of the story which didn’t coincide with the first sitrep..
I said “you commented about being comped for being present for duty on your off day, Airman.. I commented in there somewhere that you “signed up” for Honor Guard .. you wanted to do the Detsils.. So why are you changing your story, Airman?” The NCOIC Of HG a
Had finally arrived. He didn’t say anything in defense of the Airman or myself... His 1SGT looked at him and asked if he had brought his HG gear.. he said he had.. “Turn it over to the HG NCOIC and get outta my face!”.. 1SGT was Not a happy camper with his Airman.. I asked the HG
NCOIC why hadn’t he commented.. “why should I , you did a fantastic job of it!” He grabbed the uniform and I got the helmet
Bag and we got out of the 1SGTs office..
Some other Airmen members commented they were pleased to see him go.. some others commented I was out of line and it wasn’t my position to tell him what I did.. The NCOIC backed me .. saying Something about the SSGT Chevrons on my sleeves.. . Somebody
Implied he should go to the I.G... s’body else said they’d look into it and kick it back in his face.. eventually his story was history.. thanks for that !.. talk about being comped disappeared .. it’s up to a Airman’s duty section to comp them for duty completed on their own time.. it depends what it is .. He needed to be aware he signed up for it.. We often pushed the wire to NOT get back to base

I got off the bus one day .. they let me off at my bks. I went in, freshened up again(it was like 90• out.. ). Came out of the bks.. and headed to the Airmen’s Dng
Hall.. A mbr from another FLT had seen me get off the bus... I surmise he was butthurt because I didn’t have to return to work.. if he’d asked me, I’d told him I’d worked night before So I was on my time for two days.. just ask.. geez ! My own section covered my ‘6’ and told who’d enquired that i’d Worked the night before..
I got with them.. I signed on knowing I’d have detail like this... I’m not handling a front-end loader.. or a bus.. so I’m not going to run into s’body.. Some wise guy says i’m Making other people look bad because they’re being comped.. Too bad.! Grow a couple !.. own up! It’s a duty !...

I played Taps for our Legion Post on Memorial Day (we called it Decoration Day back then). We did services at three different country cemeteries. 1903 Springfield rifles. Taps and Retreat are my favorite.

Taps, I was an Army Brat and raised on the Army Bases in Germany. I used to hear taps at night and I never really understood the true meaning of Taps until I came back from Vietnam in 1968. I was sent to Germany and I remember listening to taps when I was in my rack in the barracks and remember all girlfriends I lost in Vietnam and I understood finally and I used to lay there and cry. I still do when I hear taps and the best rendition of it was by a young girl who played it on a trumpet and it made me cry because she played it so beautifully. Vets who have lost friends in combat understand the true meaning of Taps.

Actually, a few of the members here responded with TAPS but, my favorite version of TAPS is Echo TAPS! The haunting call reminds me of the here and the past as well as future with the All Mighty!

Although Taps is the favorite it is also the most emotional. I have attended a number of military funerals or services for deceased military. Taps is what I remember most, the most haunting.

I serve on our V.F.W. Honor Guard...I was cooking s’thing up about the Taps playing.
I have Taps In my phone and have a good portable speaker and a friend who has same kind of phone I do... what I did was send her the laps. She early on synced her phone with that speaker.. she followed in her car and was where she could see us.. We pulled off a echo taps..
it was so Neat !.. The family and friends were so impressed.. a friend or relative dropped by and donated a $200 check for our Honor Guard. We’ve done 4 like that over that past 7 months..

As a Bugler, the ones that I really enjoyed playing were Tattoo and Call to Quarters. Both provided for more expressive playing and putting my self into the call. Taps was difficult because crying made it hard.

I love hearing "Retreat." I lived with site of the main HQ Bldg at my first duty station. Standing on my patio in the fading light while it echoed in the hollows is a beautiful memory 46 years later.

I liked all the ones I heard at that advanced field baker class at Ft Lee. Tattoo was a nice call, (done before taps).
On a pole right by our build’g was a speaker and one could hear the calls clearly.. I would crack the balcony door open so it could be heard inside better..
Once tattoo and taps was done, I’d secure the door again . And go back to my room.. “Hey Herrst if you like that so much.. crossover.!”...I’d hear them yelling from the bay.. I was only there 30 Tng days.. by time weekends and holidays were thrown in.. a little over a month..

I never had a favorite bugle call but the one that effected me the most was Taps, I remember being an Army Brat and living on the base both in Germany and in the States. I used to listen to it at night but it never hit me like it did after a I came back from Vietnam. I used to lay in my rack at night and hear Taps and then I would remember all the guys I knew who didn't come back and the ones I didn't know too and I would cry. I still can't listen to it with out crying and its been 50 yrs since I came back and 31 yrs since I retired. The best rendition was by a young lady who plays the full version on a trumpet. I believe her name is Melissa Andre Rieu, when I heard her played taps it made me cry even more. Who ever says grown men don't cry has never list any friends or family.

Taps has always been my favorite for several reasons...One I have played "Taps" on my Trumpet(s) for military funerals, I can't even count how many times, and also for "The Fallen Comrade Ceremony" at military balls and special functions...when I play it well ...it nearly always brings out emotions, even in the most disciplined of military men and women...We reflect on those who have paid the ultimate price...

Now today... they have a Pre-Programmed Electronic Bugle which anyone in the Funeral Detail can be the Bugler...I did play on an actual Bugle when I was in the Boy Scouts, but not for long...I always play on my Trumpet(s)...Sounds better...(unless you are that Guy or Gal that screws it up) ...You don't want to be that player...especially if you were in the Army Band...

I was never in the Army Band, although I have played with them from time to time...and one of my WTU Soldiers was a Trumpet Bandsmen and mentored/instructed/taught me while he was in recovery (From a TBI-Neurological Event)...He rehabbed and re-auditioned and re-entered the Army Band...I continued to have him as an instructor until I PCS'd...Last time I chatted with him, he was an SFC and getting close to Retirement...Just shows you that you can be mentored by anyone and learn....Sorry I digressed...

Oooo it's time for RETREAT.....Gotta get out of the car!

The only place I heard bugle calls constantly during the day was when I was a Cadet at Bordentown Military Institute in Bordentown, New Jersey. The first call of the day was at 0600, the last was taps at 2200. There were calls to formations, raising the National colors in the morning, Retreat at night. Mess call and a lot of others. Most the calls were recorded and heard on a campus wide PA system. Some formations however it was the band playing live for example during a parade in review on the Landon Green parade ground. As You mention the adjutants call. To answer a question You raised , no bugle call for the command pass in review, just the voice Command. I actually had it down pat every single command given during a parade in review IAW then FM22-5, Drills and Ceremonies, the Army Manual.

Not being a morning person, reveille tended to come as a shock, but I still love the sound, although TAPS is my favorite. I'm not up on any other bugle calls, unfortunately.

For me, Always has been my Favorite is Taps. For several reasons. 1) To remember our Fallen Heroes and to reflect on their dedication to Service and Country. 2) When Taps was played it, for some reason, helped me to relax and know that I was safe knowing that I was not alone and that I could get some rest.

As a mediocre trumpet player, I have a deep respect for all of them from a musical standpoint. None are easy to play. I can remember many times hearing Taps played while in my bunk, almost like the Army was giving me permission to go to sleep.

Like so many others, Taps holds a special place for us all. Whether we have lost a brother or sister, stood by a young widow as our best friend was laid to rest, or just the thought of an end to the day, it is that special memory.

First Call

Although I like it in the context of horse races. "Call to the Post" as it is called in horse racing signals that all mounts should be at the paddock exit and ready to proceed onto the track. We're done standing around and it will soon be time to see the horses run.

Taps was not a favorite but it stopped me in my tracks, I generally knew for who Taps was played for. It was another chance to reflect on that person, friend, and fellow soldier. Taps were also known to make me shed a tear.

I am still serving as bugler to various Honor Guards. I have sounded Taps at hundreds of funerals over the past 35 plus years since I re-enlisted in the Army Reserve at age 47. Summers I teach young Scouts to be buglers and sound appropriate calls during the day and evening. One of my buglers is a trumpet player with the Marine Band. I have sounded Taps at many national Cemetery and overseas cemeteries. My more interesting Bugle Call was Officers Call for joint British and zAmerican Marine wedding of a British Major to my cousin as they formed the sword arch

I was Corps Bugler at Texas A&M in 1961-‘62 and blew nine calls each day M-F for which I was paid $40 per month by the college (the school was them known as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas and MG Earl Rudder was college president. MG Rudder had served in the Army in WW2 and on D-Day in 1944 he led his 2Bn 75 Infantry Regiment in scaling the cliffs at Point du Hoc overlooking Omaha and Utah Beaches on the Normandy coast. MG Rudder received the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions that day, in addition to the Purple Heart for being wounded twice by Nazi gunners as he scaled the cliffs. I was privileged to shake his hand one Saturday at morning drill. It was an honor to meet him and hear him speak to the assembled Corps of Cadets.

Taps is the most meaningful. When I was a 12 year old scout, my trumpet teacher taught me Taps so I could become my Troop Bugler - told me that it was the only one a Bugler needed to know - I could learn the rest. Gerry Scott was deployed to Korea shortly thereafter and went missing in the winter of 1951 when his unit was overrun by the Chinese. He remains an MIA. Several years ago, I had the honor of conducting a memorial service in the fighting position south of Seoul where he went missing which gave his family some closure. Yes, Taps is my favorite.
