From the start, I never believed in giving the old, "I don't know the answer to that question, but I'll find out and get back with you." I believed that if you knew any part of the question, you should answer confidently and try to make them believe you knew it. So I jumped in with both feet.

"Yes, Sergeant Major, in the event of a combat veteran who has sustained irreparable wounds to his private parts, and upon the approval of a board of qualified psychologists who recommend said surgery for the mental health... " About that time, I saw him crack a small smile and I knew that wasn't the answer, but I continued to finish the answer I had committed to. *MY* sergeant major tried to make it seem like I had come up with another scenario but I had made a fatal error. CHAMPUS was the "Civilian Health And Medical Plan for the Uniformed Services"... it didn't apply to disabled combat veterans. That would have been the VA.

The answer concerned a newborn dependent child with ambiguous genitalia, and which would basically have gender assignment surgery. There had to be a story somewhere about how that CSM came up with that question.

Although I missed the question, I ultimately won the Board that day. As the members of the Board moved down the line congratulating all of us on making it that far, and me for winning, that specific CSM paused while shaking my hand and said, "Vaughn, that was the best damn job of bullshitting I've ever heard."

Me: (Straight faced) "Thank you, Sergeant Major." Response by SSG Johnnie Vaughn made Jul 4 at 2017 8:40 PM 2017-07-04T20:40:38-04:00 2017-07-04T20:40:38-04:00 Maj John Bell 7850684

Most favorite answer at a Meritorious Sgt board.

Every other Marine wore Dress Blues or Class A's.
