I grew up in a Long Range Surveillance Company. Must guys there came out of Ranger bat. While walking at Fort Polk with a team leader he yelled at the top of his lungs "Rangers Lead The Way" and the LT walk by jump back for being so shocked. He didn't see it coming.

Good morning/afternoon/evening, Sir/ma'am. I keep it simple as I tend to not remember the unit motto as I'm usually focused on something else.

For me, it has always been the motto of 1st Armored Division. I spent my first 5 years in the Army there. Now that I'm deployed, I try to salute and give their unit's motto. If all else fails, All the Way always works. Not everyone understands Iron Soldiers, but everyone knows the 82nd Airborne's motto

My usual audio, when I did say something, was "Good Day, Sir/Ma'am" because that way I didn't have to think about being correct in saying 'Good Morning" while it was still morning or "Good Afternoon" after noon. Once, I bet a fellow service member I could say "Howdy, Sir" and keep my stripes. I said it to the next officer we passed...and...no problem!

My last unit had to say, "Climb to glory," when saluting an officer and the officer would respond with "To the top." I added on for the fun of it "Back to the bottom."

I'm a Vietnam Vet
If it is an older Vet I salute them , nod my head and smile.
If someone younger salutes me I say thank You.

I always wear a ball cap that says US PARATROOPER.
So many young people and even some older now days come up
and thank me for my service.
I always graciously acknowledge them and thank them back

In the Navy, we simply say "Good morning, good afternoon, or good evening", and "Sir or Ma'am", as appropriate. Of course, this is only in a casual meeting, and not watch or duty specific. My fave, of course, was "I stand relieved!"

Makes no difference about your favorite thing to say. The prescribed is Good Morning or Good After noon, Good Evening Sir or Ma'am. There could be a unit preference such as "Airborne Sir/Ma'am, the other responds with "All the Way". You can substitute the rank instead of "Sir or Ma'am.

We always replied "2 Manchu Sir!" Most officers had no clue how to respond unless they were in our unit.
