My favorite patches for combat patches of which I can wear only one would have to be the 2nd Infantry Division, the other is for the 10th Mountain Division. I know that the most common is the 1st Cavalry patch, one which my father wore in Vietnam. I post this one in his memory. RIP Dad.

My usual patches, that I keep on hand are Pictured. Most of the time I rock the 89th MP BDE, I try not to Sandwich so the 18th is off my list for now. If theres a Loud mouth 5 Jumper running around calling every one a LEG, I'll adorne my 16th MP BDE patch (*I'm not airborne) and they have since lost the TAB for most of the BDE. USFORA is a new patch for me, just got it last year, but everyone here has it, and I like to be diffrent. Lastly the 1st MEF, used to wear it, and now i just keep one for the memories.

I would have to say that of the 4 that I can wear the 416th ENG patch is my favorite. This is the patch that I received when the 46th ENG BN crossed the boarder on day 2 of OIF who could have guessed it would have lasted so long.

Honestly it depends on the day... my most prized combat patch is my 18th MP Bde. I origionally earned it in the invasion of Iraq. I served with a lot of good peopl in that tour and we lost a few Soldiers.

I also wear my USASFC patch as I was able to do some unique things with 10th Group when I was assigned to them.

I am also authorized to wear 1AD, 3ID, 43d MP

I wear the one on the left. It is the 525th Military Intelligence from my first deployment. I didn't have the second one but a team from 10th MTN wore it. It is the approved patch from the the 10th MTN Long Range Surveillance Detachment. They deployed with us to iraq. Very few people even knew about the unit. It is a small group of scouts that were on jump status at Drum. They had berets and all as they were the only airborne unit on post there. They were deactivated in 05 I believe. It is the more unique combat patch I have ever seen.

Authorized to wear 1AD, 1ID, 3ACR, I Corps, XVIII Airborne Corps, MNC-I, MNF-I/USF-I, USFOR-A and USCENTCOM. I'd wear them all except for the USCENTCOM patch. I just couldn't bring myself to wear the USCENTCOM patch on the right shoulder.

I don't think there is a right and wrong answer for this. I went over with 225th engineer Battalion 926 MAC compeny. I know, who the fuck is that, right? That was 107 part time combat engineers that did 411 days in RC East in Afghanistan. We cleared routes all damn day. Not one engineer was killed. To make other units feel safer about trusting us when we cleared the way, I would walk the entire unimproved route in the middle of the road. To me that is bad ass.

They aren't "combat patches". They denote foreign service during wartime. Incorrect verbiage fosters the wrong connotation and thus generates pointless debate about who is better than who, and who "deserves" to wear what.

The 32nd had the best NCO Club at each armory! Beer and football courtesy of the Company Commader after a long infantry training weekend. This unit was at the Battle of the Bulge in WW2.

There are a lot of history behind all of these great patches but the the patch of the 81st Infantry Division, 100 years old, is the daddy of them all. The first combat patch authorized by in the modern Army.

Symbolism
The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally approved for the 81st Division by telegram on 19 October 1918. On 29 June 1922, it was officially announced. The insignia was redesignated for the 81st Infantry Division on 11 May 1964, retroactive to 1 August 1942. On 22 April 1968, it was authorized for the 81st U.S. Army Reserve Command. The insignia was reassigned and authorized effective 16 April 1996, for the U.S. Army 81st Regional Support Command. It was redesignated for the U.S. Army 81st Regional Readiness Command effective 16 July 2003. The insignia was redesignated effective 17 September 2008, for the 81st Regional Support Command and amended to add a symbolism. The 81st Division is credited as being the first unit to have a shoulder sleeve insignia. (TIOH Dwg. No. A-1-128).

It's 1917 and the 81st Infantry Division is training at Camp Jackson (now Fort Jackson) South Carolina. As the war progressed with the involvement of the United States, recruits from the northern states were pushed south into Virginina and North Carolina to train in milder climates.

So the recruits from North and South Carolina were sent to Camp Jackson, created for training the 81st. Division commander MG Charles Bailey went to Europe before the deployment of the 81st to survey the landscape of the war. While there he noticed that many of our ally units wore distinctive unit patches. Besides unit pride the primary reason for having the patches was during all the confusion of the battlefield, the fog of war if you will, especially in the trench warfare, patches made it easier for unit members to link back up with their own unit members after making mass movements.

Bailey returned to Camp Jackson and held a contest for a design of a unit patch. The winning design was that of the wildcat, which had become the nickname of the 81st because of the creek of the same name that ran through Camp Jackson. The longest road on Jackson going out to the training sites was also named Wildcat Road for the same reason.

The original patch had a three legged profile, combining the back leg to save on thread and making it easier to manufacture. So the Soldiers of the 81st sewed the patches on their uniforms, continued training and eventually boarded the train to New York to ship to France. When they reached the port of embarkation the patches were noticed, flagged as unauthorized and the Soldiers were ordered to remove them. So the Soldiers removed the patches and put them in their pockets only to resew them back on during the voyage over.

When they stepped off the the ships in France a photo taken of these American Soldiers with patches ended up on the front page of a magazine. This started commotion among the other American units there and in short order reached General John "Blackjack" Pershing's office. Pershing summoned Bailey to his office to explain why his Soldiers were out of uniform and wearing the unauthorized patch. Bailey finally wore Pershing down with his arguments; the fog of war, unit pride, esprit de corps and that his unit had trained under to patch and that it would be a morale breaker to have his Soldiers to remove it. Pershing finally gave in with words somewhat of this nature; Bailey, your unit can keep their damn patch but they better damn well earn it!

When other units saw that they 81st were allowed to keep their patch they of course complained, the which Pershing relented and authorized the other units to create and wear their own patch. So before the Big Red One, the 82nd, the First Cav, 101st Screaming Eagles or any of the other more famous patches, there was the Wildcat, for the 81st Infantry Division. It recognition of that honor, it is the ONLY combat patch that only comes in completely subdued format. There is no colored "Class A" format.

At the Infantry Museum at Fort Benning there is a World War I Lieutenant wearing a patch, that of the 81st. That Soldier in heat combat called to the rear to bring up more ammunition. When none arrived he made his way back to find out why. The ammo bearers feared the intense combat and had refused to bring the ammo up. To which the Soldier drew his sidearm and threatened the ammo bearers with their lives if they did not move the ammo up, which they did. That Soldier later received a battlefield commission.

I am former US Army. But, during the Invasion of Iraq, my unit was assigned to the First Marines. We stayed with 1st Marine Division for about four months before being transferedback to our BN. So, I'm one of the few Soldiers that is authorized the 1st MD combat patch. Also, I was honored to serve with the Marines, USN, and USAF while in Africa.

I rock my 2nd Mar Div patch, as I started out as a Marine Grunt and deployed as such, wore it from the first day that I crossed over to the army. It's been disputed as to whether or not a a Marine who crosses over is authorized to do this, but as a CSM once told me "I'd like to see someone try and take it off of your arm". All in all, I've never caught any Shit about it. I would rather rock my battalion emblem (as Marine Grunts identify battalion as opposed to division) but alas, No dice

When I was stationed at Bliss w/JTF-N, there were soldiers wearing 1st MarDiv combat patches. The Army eventually out the kibosh on soldiers wearing Marine Dividion patches, but the soldiers loved wearing them since so few rated.

They said it was their favorite patch for a myriad of reasons, but the best one I heard was "The Marines had the best round down range to PowerPoint slide ratio"

Don't have a favorite as all three are special in some way. The Airborne Brigade of the 1st Cav was the first and the rarest. The SF combat patch represented the most unique of my assignments in RVN. My combat Patch was earned on August 23, 1968 at Duc Lap Vietnam. I was in the Mike Force unit relieving the camp that had been surrounded by the NVA Army, with my fellow Green Berets and Montonyards. It was a life saving event and I will remember it always and the men who served with me and didn't come back. God bless America and the Army Special Forces.

Wow! That one is challenging. I'm going to go with the patches I have worn. My favorite by design is the 70th Trailblazer patch. It has a lot of symbolism in its design and a great history. But I wore the 89th patch the longest and it will always hold a special place in my heart. However, as a Reserve Soldier (AGR for part of that time), I had the opportunity to work at FORSCOM for 4 years and I am proud to have had the opportunity to wear that patch.

My 2 cents on the ABN/AASLT thing. Sure, early 20th century technology (parachute drops) have their place, and its no small feat of personal courage to exit an aircraft by yourself. But keep in mind that Air Assault is more tactical (flying nap-of-the-Earth, you aren't broadcasting that you're coming, all the while perfectly defenseless), and you can be very surgical about putting troops exactly where you want them instead of dropping them over several grid squares and hoping they can get to a point where they are cohesive enough to be combat effective. There's a reason more units conduct helicopter-borne insertions and combat jumps aren't a "thing" anymore (any "mustard stains" on your jump wings from Iraq or Afghanistan, 82nd? I didn't think so). Additionally, the AALST course actually makes you "think", on top of being only physical in nature. After graduating, 101st Troopers must actually apply the sling loading skills and load planning to move personnel and equipment to the battle space. Basic jump school doesn't teach you to rig parachutes, does it? Either way, the rivalry and smack talk isn't going to end, so I'll just say this: The Airborne Tab on the 101st distinctive unit insignia is there because of the Soldiers that earned it through the years, not because of what "ride" they take to work. I've seen no "dissing" of glider units (they didn't jump either). Besides, I learned this during the 2003 invasion of Iraq as a 101st trooper headed towards the fight in a Blackhawk helicopter: the mission of Airborne forces hasn't changed: you push as far as you can by means of flight into enemy territory, and are *prepared to fight while surrounded by the enemy* when you get there. Your only support is what you've brought with you, and your comrades in arms. Be proud of that combat patch, Eagles! We have made our “Rendezvous With Destiny”.

Pre-9/11: Some people in my unit had the CENTCOM patch from Desert Storm as their combat patch, and were apparently allowed to the wear the desert color version on their woodland BDUs. I thought that looked cool.

Post-9/11: Was attached to the British Royal Marines for the invasion of Iraq. Always wished that I could have worn their patch as my combat patch.

My first tour in Vietnam was an XO &CO of Special Forces A-Teams . My second tour was flying Hueys with the 1st CAV and 1st Ave Bde. Of the three, I wore the SF patch on my right shoulder.
