It means if you have a winning spirit and don't quit attitude, you shall prevail.

You might be hungry, thirsty, sun baked, scared, receiving fire, losing your buddies, want to displace but you fight on because it matters to you and your buddies.

I believe Calvin Coolidge said it with more flare, but Mark Twain said it quick and to the point "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog."

Both I believe say a person who is focused on a task will be successful. It may take time, but they will succeed. "Success only comes before work in the dictionary."
