I have often joked that as long as the Command will except my sown statement with nothing but the following: “I will always place the mission first, I will never except defeat” that I would do what is being asked. 99.999% of the time they get the idea and realize that what they are asking is wrong and the “good idea fairy” goes away.

My father learned latin so he could read it, and he carried that same tattered piece of paper with him. One of my big philosophies is that everyone can learn something from everyone, regardless of rank. It doesn't matter if you're a General, you can learn from a Private. Everyone has a unique set of life experiences that we could take something away from. Now, occassionally, what we can learn from someone is what not to do or how not to conduct one's self but even with that, if you're able to not only learn from your mistakes but from others' then you're ahead of the game.

Be good to people, and the majority of them will be good to you. There are charlatans, crooks, cheats, and general scum out there, and (GASP!) some of them have joined the military. However, be good to them too. This doesn't mean to be lenient; however, there is no reason to go around being a jerk. I have never yelled at a Soldier, and I don't plan on it anytime soon.

OCS taught me this. We had one cadre member, a CPT, who was a jerk all of the time. It didn't matter what the occasion; he was just a jerk. The other cadre weren't, and we learned a lot from them. I learned only two things from this particular CPT: 1) Avoid him like the plague and 2) Don't be him. I've been living my military life by that second point ever since.

Good question, SSG Adam Reed. My "personal" motto would be "Be all you can be." I kind of fell in love with that Army motto when it came out. I have tried to live my military and post-military life according to it.

My wife has a motto (most likely not original) that ties in with "Be all you can be." She says this: "Good, better, best. Never let it rest. Until your good is better and your better is best.” I Googled it and found that's a quote from a guy named Tim Duncan. I take it to mean we should always strive to do better, which is something like being all one can be.

I use this Gen. Colin Powell quote on all of my e-mails..

Mine is not really a motto or creed but I have a saying, "I hold myself as well as my junior personnel to higher standards, not to discourage them but because I know we can surpass them." And I have actually told this to some of my junior personnel before, "I hold you to high standards because I can see in you the ability to surpass them, whether you can see it or not."
