What being an NCO to me means to me; I can swear wittily and use the shit out of some knife hands. What is better than that?

An example would be running up to this cat and flailing my arms like I was standing in front of a mattress store with a fan up my ass, then screaming, "Holy shit there PVT! You are an abortion poster child! Now get on you face and beat it into the ground until the stupid leaves! Don't you dare get up till I get tired"

You know or something nice like that.

I was Parachute Light Infantry (in some form) for most of my career. When given a chance, I almost always went with Airborne or Special Forces Units. This was not because I was anything special, but I knew that the other men in the Battalion were special. With all respect to conventional "Leg" units, I didn't want to die, because some schmuk couldn't go without a cigarette in the woods at 2:00 AM. I have found that Artillery is a "to whom it may concern" weapon, and you don't have to be the idiot that was spotted to die from it.

It is amazing how many times I have felt this way! It is a WTFO moment! While this is a 4 yr old post, I think of what is happening today around the world and continue to be - bewildered at best!

Hope this was not OJT on the weapon? LoL If so, this group is in real trouble! Perhaps like the OJT taking place down some corridors in the Congress.

There is a prevalent problem in the Army. The stud NCOs get work piled on them because they are reliable. That is unfair so as a commander I insisted that we share the wealth. It is good for fairness, morale, training, and leadership. It also gave me an idea of the potential of the NCO based on present performance.

I had three major expectations of NCOs:
- Take care of soldiers.
- Be technically sound.
- Be tactically sound.

The other expectations were:
- Buy into the culture I wanted to create.
- Enforcing standards.
- Be proficient trainers.
- Help me plan and tell me that there is a better way to do things.
-Buy into the endeavor to increase morale.
- Be fair. An example if soldiers volunteer to work weekends they will get two days off. This really worked well as the vast majority of soldiers volunteered to work on the weekends.
- I told the E-5s they were crucial to the unit because it is at their level that the rubber meets the road with the soldiers.
- I expected the 1SG and I work as a tight team and always have his/her ear to the ground.
