What items did you appreciate getting the most when deployed?

The stuff I appreciated the most was the stuff that served a practical purpose and made my deployed quality of life better. Stuff such as good quality winter socks for the Afghan winter, lip balm and sunscreen for the summer, a good quality coffee mug (Stanley) that did not destroy itself within a month, stuff like that.

SPC(P) Private RallyPoint Member I appreciated everything that was sent to me. It was the thought that counts. I did like to receive paperback books. We also received Care packages which were great.

My mom sent peanut butter tubes, I don't know if they still make those. But it was peanut butter that came in a tube similar to go-gurt for kids. good toilet paper, deodorant, DVDs, hard candy (doesn't melt), earphones or headsets comfortable ones, one of my roommates bought us all slippers to wear in our CHU's to be comfortable in I suppose. I concur with socks, a good thermos, hot chocolate with the little marshmallows. I know my friends that drank coffee were fond of various coffees from Dunkin Donuts or their favorite coffee house. Hope this helps. A good coffee pot too! Seriously I know we had quite a few joes that bought them or ordered them. Good soups or food in microwave form. My husband on his last deployment depended on those packages because they ate MRE's for a good while.

Our leadership signed us up to get random letters and cards from people all over the U.S. while I was out there. I personally enjoyed the surprise of what kind of stuff the kids would draw and say. Good times all around.

Beef Jerky, Trail Mix, Protein Bars, and any kind of workout supplements. I liked getting pre-workout and protein while I was here! (Of course military approved supplements.)

I had 4 or 5 10 can logs of Copenhagen sent to me every couple of weeks. I was like a dope dealer, had people coming to my hooch all the time looking to buy some dip. The "PX" was always out, and when they did have some it was the plastic can crap. So I was the guy that always had fresh dip from the States. Made a killing. Hustler magazines were also a hot commodity.

One of my favorite care packages came from my family. It had the standard guy's magazine. I think it was Maxim or FHM or something along those lines, but it was a "Salute the Troops" issue where all the girls were in service tributed swimwear. I got a couple packs of Nerds Rope. Then some personal knickknacks, family photos, holiday cards, letters etc.

I loved the baby wipes I got - small travel packets so they didn't dry out. A retired LTC friend of mine sent me a clothes line and pins - fantastic. He also sent beef jerky and a couple packs of chew!

I hate saying this but my last deployment wife sent me a bread maker!!! There was nothing like home made bread baking in the B-Hut. Plus people walking by would try and figure out where it was coming from. Still have it and it work great to this day!

besides the obvious messages from family and such, I was stoked to get non perishable food items. Can goods and such I can stash for the rainy season when going to eat is rough. any type of literature especially if it was like a series i can read one after another.I didn't smoke but I had my family send cartons of cigarettes so I can give out to the Soldiers that did smoke. The cigarettes that were available were stale and gross.

In the 70s, I was stationed in Korea and got caught up in President's Carter's drawdown tour extensions. My Scout Platoon was on the DMZ at GPs 115 & 116.
I got a huge fruit cake cake in the mail from my grandma. She sent a hammer, chisel and metal file inside it. The note on top said "I hope this helps you OUT of Korea."
Grandma had a great sense of humor.
