87 not bad. I would try to go into something in IT. IT is growing into a larger market with each passing year. You will be able to find a good IT position in the Air Force that can create a good foundation for something later on if you decide to go into the private sector.SGT Joseph GundersonSat, 01 Sep 2018 15:16:04 -04002018-09-01T15:16:04-04:00Response by SGT Private RallyPoint Member made Sep 1 at 2018 4:44 PM

Possibly IT, medical, or Intel. Generally, things that grant Top Secret clearances are nice on the civilian side. Network administrators are still in pretty big demand, and the medical path could lead to a career outside as well.SGT Private RallyPoint MemberSat, 01 Sep 2018 16:44:19 -04002018-09-01T16:44:19-04:00Response by CMSgt Donald Felch made Sep 1 at 2018 4:52 PM

With that score you could do just about anything you want. The Air Force has some awesome jobs to pick from. Do some research and try to narrow it down.

It could make the difference is a lifetime. Still keep an open mind but you can score a great job that you really like if it is open and you meet all other requirement.

I was Navy myself. I was in the medical field and loved it. But there is a lot to choose from and I don't really know what you like it dislike

I'm sure they will try to sell you a hard to fill job off the jump. You may not be able to pick exactly what you want. It doesn't always work that way. They have to have an opening in a particular career/school for you.

Great score, it's something to be proud of. And I love your enthusiasm. Whatever you choose it gets picked for you... You will do wellPO1 Barbara MatthewsSat, 01 Sep 2018 17:36:47 -04002018-09-01T17:36:47-04:00Response by Maj Marty Hogan made Sep 1 at 2018 6:13 PM

Cyber, anything IT related- what are you interested in. ASVAB scores are great, but if you are not interested in something and only in it for the follow on, you find yourself wasting four years of your life. Find something that drives your passion and money becomes a secondary effect of the desire.

This question comes relatively frequently on RP. I don't mean to be harsh, but we don't know you. You've given us precious little to go on.

I think a more appropriate line of questions would involve you determining somewhere around five MOS's you think you are interested in, then ask for input from people in the RP community that have served in those MOS's. What they liked? What they didn't like? What their typical day was like? And what are their related career prospects upon leaving the service.

When it is time to leave the service and start your civilian career:
_is there a reasonable expectation that you could make enough money to be happy in a job you hate?
_is there a reasonable expectation that you could be happy with not much money in a job you love?Maj John BellSat, 01 Sep 2018 18:25:32 -04002018-09-01T18:25:32-04:00Response by MSgt Private RallyPoint Member made Sep 1 at 2018 9:58 PM

The biggest thing you can do is look at what interests you NOW. If you don't have a clue what you want to do in life, any and all recruiters are going to have a field day with you. Find FIVE (at least) jobs you're interested in doing. Rank them from first choice to last. If you have time, go visit folks in the field preferably E1-4. Skip the Rah-Rah videos. They're complete BS, and don't show what it'll really be like. Google the job MOS's against the civilian counterparts for pay and benefits. Don't be fooled by big bonuses. You'll be one pissed off troop with a bit of chump change and a long ass enlistment.
If the recruiter tells you that a particular MOS has suddenly filled for that day or you cannot have it (unless for medical reasons) ask for a ride home right there. Walk away. They will get you to fill a needed slot that fits the needs of the service, your intentions be damned. If you're given the MOS you want, but have to go into Delayed Entry, don't fuck that up. Too many think "I was told it'll be 90 days before I ship", just to find they've been moved up and have smoked weed, gotten tats, done other dumb shit that kills any chance at a career in the military and you cannot come back from.

In 94 I wanted to go Airborne Infantry. It was offering a $1500 signing bonus which was a lot for a kid from the projects. Went to MEPS and due to flat feet was denied. I had Medical as a secondary. I was told it was full for the day. I spent six hours looking at Ordinance MOS's for various mechanics before I asked my recruiter what he was. He was Airborne. It was 95B (MP which is now 31B). Did 90 in DE, and the rest is history. But at B-More MEPs, four recruits who were supposed to ship with me, never left for various reasons. Know what you want, have a backup plan, and be ready to walk away until you get something you like. Don't enlist and have a job you really hate. It never ends well.SSG Warren SwanSun, 02 Sep 2018 00:56:11 -04002018-09-02T00:56:11-04:00Response by PV2 Private RallyPoint Member made Sep 14 at 2018 2:53 PM
