What kind of music do you get into - connected with your time in the service?

There must've been certain genre's that really amped you up. So much so it brings you back to a time when you were getting prepared for "war." Maybe there's certain tunes that helped you get shit done. Get through personal things. Even something about the music that makes you think of your buddies. I know for me I really Love metal. Sounds cliché but that really does it for me. That and country music. Anywhere from singing along and going to shows with friends I served with, or just meeting Vets in the mosh-pit during an epic show! I distinctly remember my LPO showing combat videos charged with a soundtrack of adrenaline from the war in Iraq in order to motivate his new crew for deployment. But also there's some catchy classic ones that were pretty funny to pass-on and get stuck in people's heads during a long underway. There even came a time when I was playing guitar a lot and sort-of forming a band of other service members that would get together and play in our barracks or someone's garage. It can be ridiculous or insane, the associations music produces, but it helps keeps me sane! Hope it does for you. Love to hear your taste and experience.

I can pretty much listen to most music types, with the exception of Rap. Just can't get into it. However;, I also enjoy Rock & Roll from the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's. I like R&B as well. Groups like the Commodores, Earth Wind & Fire and so on. These days, I listen to K-Love and Country, because that's pretty much what I'm gonna find on the radio in Rural Missouri.

My mood determines what kind of music pumps me up or keeps me mellow.

As for "Getting Motivated" music, my CO on the USS NEW ORLEANS (LPD-18) (2010-2013) would always play AC/DC, as were launching AAV's and LCAC's, over the 1MC. Didn't matter if it was 04:00 or earlier. He also played the same AC/DC songs as we were traveling back to San Dawg through the harbor, just to let the locals know we were coming home. . . . and he had it played LOUD!

Nothing like listening to "Back in the Black", or "Highway to Hell" as AAV's were launching off our stern gate.

New Age music. Enya, Enigma, Deep Forest, Darude, etc. The one song I would play every night was Blonde's "Heart of Glass". My wife, at the time, never was home when I called or wrote me while I was deployed. New Age music ALWAYS put my head back in the game for the next day's missions. NO PITY PARTIES!!!

Folk music, Blues, Opera, Sixties music, just about any anti-war music... That doesn't mean lack of respect for the soldiers or the flag - just the frustration that we usually don't do enough to prevent war. Cutting back on support to Ukraine is apt to prolong war. IMHO. One of my favorite singers is Leonard Cohen. Some similarities in his life and mine.

Crosby, Stills, Nash, the Rolling Stones, and the Animals in Viet Nam, we even played the Stones "Sympathy for the Devil" while running convoy through Najaf and Al Kut.
