What life skills did the military give you that civilian life did not or could not?

Survival skills for sure (build an igloo, etc.). Then there are are character skills. Honesty, trustworthiness, etc. Sure my parents started me off right but the MIL side hammered them home. If you don't get on board with them, at some point you'll get squished. Then the life skills that you just can't unload. Wrapping the toothbrush in the washcloth, using a car antenna as a cleaning rod, you name it. The things a typical MIL can MacGyver up are legend.

Firing a .50 MG; driving and fixing an M113A2 and the M548. The ability to sleep anywhere. The ability to eat all kinds of (not so good tasting) foods.
