The NCO.

Other nations have NCOs. All of them that have GOOD NCOs learned from us. And none of them have an NCO Corps on our level. Our NCOs can run units with no Officers at all. And when they DO have the Officers, our NCOs train, train, and train some more.

Our professional NCOs mean that no matter how many leaders we lose, we continue to function.

It's our leadership and training...from the E1 to the O10 we teach our young men and women about leading from day one. We teach that the person standing to the left or the right of you is your brother in arms and build that bond that we would take a bullet for each other...we teach that integrity means everything and that we don't always agree that is a good thing...we want independent thought...but when the preveevial poo hits the oscillating devices in the end we have each other's backs...period...we are the best trained, equipped, and motivated force on the planet because we choose to serve...we aren't conscripted...when you fight for something because you want versus having to, you will fight to the death for the soldier, sailor, airman, marine, or coastie standing next to you...that is what makes us great.

In my opinion, two reasons the US Armed Forces stand out.
1. The Non-commissioned Officer corps. The US military promotes, trains, and rewards its NOCs far better than other country's militaries--especially true for conscript militaries. The US military is selective about the members it promotes to NCO status. As the pay grade increases, the US is increasingly selective about whom gets promoted to the Senior NOC ranks. NCOs, particularly Senior NCOs, are provided considerable latitude in how they carry out their responsibilities to accomplish the missions. Independent thinking is encouraged and when done correctly the officers strongly support the NCOs. All the Services offer leadership training to those wanting to become NCOs and often require completion of leadership training to be promoted. Many NCOs have university degrees, and some have advanced degrees. A high degree of technical proficiency is generally required to reach E-6 in most MOS/AFSC. US military services have a highly effective middle management and leadership layer between junior enlisted personnel and officers.

2. All Volunteer Force. Although not unique among the world's militaries, the US adoption of the All Volunteer Force and abandonment of conscription has made the US military more effective. Because everybody volunteers into the Services, they all have at least some motivation to learn and perform their jobs well. This decreases negative events, such as accidents or operational errors. Every military member laterally has skin in the game. This also contributes to improved retention beyond the initial service commitment.

In 25 years of service, from 1975 to retirement in 2000 in the USAF, the determining element to the superiority of our forces was the quality of the men and women volunteering to join the service. Smart, goal oriented, selfless, tech savvy, hungry to experience the world. There were all kinds, from all walks of life and all backgrounds, national origins, colors ,creeds, ethnicity, academic level and economic levels. All looking to belong to something more, to gain the identity, prestige, sense of honor of an American Military Servicemember. The money spent in equipment, training, operations, was only as productive as the personnel and their commitment to accomplish the mission assigned to them. The American Servicemen and Women are the defining element of a world class military of my lifetime.

I was in during Vietnam war, and they gotta change the oath....I'm not interested in being a part of anything with our so called government & fighting for a constitution that the government does nothing but try and change or take away our rights. When leadership is willing to implement the The After Action Review (AAR) for providing feedback to units after collective training exercises. AAR systems should support the goals of analyzing what happened during an exercise, deciding why it happened, and identifying potential corrective actions.
When you have an young troop willing to speak with tact and by framing the issue—the reality of enhanced competition—it forced us both to seek potentially pragmatic solutions.

Although the times we live in are challenging with all of the wokeness and uncertainty of traditional beliefs and attitudes towards our country, I have full faith in the men and women that continue to serve.

Every generation has evolved from previous generations with different views and perspectives. But I firmly believe that the overwhelming majority of Americans still believe in this country and what that flag truly represents. Living in rural Ohio, the blue collared families still have that pride in America and would gladly risk their lives defending it.

I feel those traits and beliefs is what makes the US military the greatest in the world. The sense that we want to help the less fortunate, and willingness to defend and protect them in order for them to taste the freedom which we (usually take for granted) are afforded.

While we have the best weaponry in the world, the best trained, the best gear, etc. I believe whole heartedly that what differentiates our military from others is we are all volunteers and we volunteered to make a difference in the world. For what we believe in.

It is remarkable that even now at 50 years old, broken, grumpy, retired that every time I hear that Star Spangled Banner I still get goosebumps. Or when the VFW color guard marches down our small town streets for the 4th of July parade, our neighbors stand and clap and respect that flag and those of us that served and sacrificed in its name.

That attitude is what defines our military and makes us the best.
