He was an ordained Congregationalist minister, who taught at Bowdoin College. The college wouldn't let him go fight in the Civil War, so he told them he was going on a sabbatical in Europe. He then headed straight for the Governor of Maine's office and received a commission as an LTC. He and the 20th Maine famously held Little Round Top in the Battle of Gettysburg. Leadership and rank do not always have to be the person with the highest rank to be the best leader. <br /> My Grandfather was a CPO in WWII. He was with the 100th Seabee's He was a contractor who built many projects before and after his military service .
