Manly for how he handled Operation Overlord. He was in charge, end of story. Any failure of the Operation was on him and him alone. I use him as an example in leadership classes. Anyone who has the drive and determination to start a military career as a Seaman Recruit and end up as the CNO definitely tops my list. He was an ordained Congregationalist minister, who taught at Bowdoin College. The college wouldn't let him go fight in the Civil War, so he told them he was going on a sabbatical in Europe. He then headed straight for the Governor of Maine's office and received a commission as an LTC. He and the 20th Maine famously held Little Round Top in the Battle of Gettysburg.
