Band of Brothers, the dike...outrunning/inspiring your squad to get the drop on a numerically superior force with better positioning to blunt an enemy advance.... physical, and mental toughness, tactical aptitude, physical fitness, marksmanship, audacity, preparation, decisiveness and inspirational leadership in one moment!

GREAT thread! I kick myself for missing Glory this am. When COL Shaw tore up his pay voucher, he solidified his position of leadership in the hearts of his soldiers. I hope that wasn't a Hollywood "addition."

Leaning toward the darker side of leadership I enjoyed Platoon. It was interesting seeing the fracture of the platoon between Barnes and Elias. I use that movie as an example when I see problems with PLs and PSGs not displaying a unity of effort.

I watched a movie about Eisenhower and the friction it caused because he was always a staff officer. He was responsible of developing a campaign plan to put enough firepower in Europe to defeat the Germans. Churchill and Gen Montgomery did him a service by suggesting attacking North Africa first instead of Europe.

Hmmm.

If they're based on real people or events, and allowances are made for creative interpretation...I can see their value.

"The Lost Battalion" has always been a personal favorite...was sad to hear what happened to Major Whittlesey afterwards.

I've yet to research its accuracy, but "Hart's War" is another good one; some great examples of both good and bad leadership and sometimes from the same characters.

Being a sailor, "Master and Commander" is a favorite. I wish it had been made about Stephen Decatur (there's some parallels to Jack Aubrey) and the USS Philadelphia.

Many to choose from. The LCpl 's last statement about responsibility in A Few Good Men. Rules of Engagement is full of them. I like The Colonel asking the National Security Advisor if he'd ever had a pissed off Marine on his ass. He'd already staked his career on defending the other Colonel, but was determined to get to the bottom of it. We Were Soldiers is one of the best. "I'll be the first to set foot on the battleground, and last to step off". Words of then LTC Hal Moore, may he RIP.

Easy. I know the best one and it’s not Hollywood drama-cheezy. I used it for years in junior enlisted counsels and training. The original Zulu. With a young Michael Cain. Not Zulu dawn or any of the other ones. Zulu. Michael Cain and an amazing Stanley Baker. It depicts the defense of Roarks Drift in Africa. You’ll see leaders faced with immediately accepting (begrudgingly) seniority of command based on date of commission. Constant changing battlefield and pivoting defense tactics. Constant -and I mean constant high pressure decision making. This is not typical Hollywood with cool lines and bravado. This is being in charge and having to make decisions. Yea the blood looks fake and the effects aren’t great. But it’s a fundamentals movie of leadership. Even makes the case for old school rank firing, drill and discipline. Don’t judge until you watch it. I still watch it once a year. Go stream it.

I’m a fan of Patton. The opening speech is great! Scene where Patton directs traffic at a muddy intersection shows his ability to get hands on to demonstrate the way things should be done. The movie appears to come close to the truth told in his biography and recollections of family. The movie depiction of the slapping incident and his being sidelined during D-day is also close to factual.

Militiaman Stanislaus Katczinsky, from "All Quiet on the Western Front". As a kid, I always assumed "Kat" was the platoon sergeant. Only later when I read the book did I discover he was only a recalled reservist, not even a corporal. He was the epitome of the "take care of your men" type leader, and showed that true leaders aren't always officially listed on the TO&E.
