Up front, I never served in combat. My proudest moment came after I was out. An 0331 Machine Gunner, who was now a 0369 Infantry SNCO tracked down my address and sent me a letter. He told me that he thought I was a pain in the ass as his Weapons Platoon Leader primarily because I had crew served weapons teams do 3 hours of gun drill EVERY Friday. He thanked me, without going into detail other than when he became a MG Section leader in Afghanistan he and his Marines were alive because when he became a MG Section leader in Afghanistan he made his section do 3 hours of gun drill every Friday.

Maj John Bell What a Marine - both you and your 0331 Machine Gunner!
Those Troops never cease to amaze me! My lady friend looks askance at me when I say I loved those young Soldiers for their abilities!

I went up for E5 in early 1974. With a wife and 2 kids, it was really important to me. I appeared in front of the E5 board and thought I was well prepared. I remember one question asked of me specifically. They asked how I felt about women in the military and opening up combat roles. While I don't recall my answer verbatim, I told them that of a woman meets the same qualifications as a man I saw no reason she shouldn't be doing any job in the military. After it finished with E5 candidates, one of the members of the board came to me and said how impressed they were. He said that no one had ever handled the board so well before. As I look at what is going on today, I guess I was ahead of the times

Never puffed my chest out further than the day I graduated from Marine Corps boot camp with a meritorious promotion to PFC.
