Sgt Jay Jones Without a doubt, it was the food. In the field, once a week (when possible), a supply helicopter would bring in the normal resupplies, and food. There would be canisters of food, bread, and milk. They would also have a big container of beer and soda's on ice. This was something that we treasured. I especially loved the milk and bread.

Mess Management Specialist, Navy Cooks, Night Baker was my best friend underway, I got fresh baked goods, he got the sports scores before anyone else.

Good food always puts a smile on a hungry Marines face. We has 1 cook at our small FOB. We had A rats twice daily. He would mix and match the meals and prepare them his way. He made general tsao's chicken taste like something we would get at a restaurant at home. he would even bbq for us sometimes.
I must say mail is a easy second

Food! A good group of Mess Management Specialists (now Culinary Specialists) could make a big difference. If you were in good with the MS's shipboard life was much more bearable.

While contracting in Iraq some of the Army cooks worked some pretty good magic with what they had to work with. Props to them!

Could also get some pretty good stuff in return for fixing the Mess Sergeant's laptop, providing him internet or a DSN (formerly Autovon) line. :)
