What MOS should my son choose? https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-mos-should-my-son-choose

my 16 yr old son will be a Jr in HS this September. His wants to get his Eagle by May 2018 so he can sign up for a split training, Go to BCT next summer between jr & sr yr & then graduate HS & then AIT.
He wants to be a 68W. He wants to help save soldiers lives but he does not want to be in a clinic. He's always wanted to be a solider but recently focused on being a medic. What MOS do you suggest

He originally wanted to be 11B. But the more he thought about it the more he said he wanted to be a medic. But he had concerns. He is a very very...linear boy. But he is also very religious. He said he thought he would be good at being a medic but he had concerns about "Fighting against Gods will" He felt that if someone might die in combat its gods will. I explained that sometimes Gods will is that they live - and he uses the soldiers and medics as his hands. From that point on he wanted to be a medic. Now he isnt overbearing in his beliefs - he just believes in an active and present God. He wants to serve.

Also as a 16 yr old boy he finds himself wondering what sort of man he is. He wants to be tested. Thus the desire to be in combat I think. His grandfather was a combat vetern from vietnam and I think that drives his thinking. You can be sent anywhere within the Army. Most guys go to combat units but it's very possible to be stationed within a hospital or clinic. You should let him know though that being stationed within a hospital or clinic isn't a bad thing. He'll learn much more about medicine in a hospital environment than he will with a combat unit and have more time for furthering his education. If all goes as it should - he will finish AIT etc Aug 2018 and be a 35T. This question is for my middle son - still in High School. Eldest son wants to do 4 years and get out and work in Tech Industry. Middle son has always wanted to be a career soldier. He is a Life Scout in Boy Scouts. He back packs, hikes, shoots (amazing with rifle.). He wants to be a soldier in truest sense of word. He also wants to be a medic. He's always been good with emergency situations. Hes patched up the youngest boy more than Id like to admit - if they remembered to clean up the blood in the bathroom - I might not have noticed the finger tip sliced open... Trying to start paramedic school without that base of knowledge is like skipping algebra before taking calculus. You can do it, but it's extremely difficult. I'd recommend trying to get some rides along with EMTs/paramedics in your area as well as taking some anatomy classes in high school (preferably college courses) in the meantime. AIT (advanced individual training) for medics is ranked as one of the most difficult in the army. 1/3 of the soldiers fail out and have to choose another MOS. You have to pass the NREMT within 7 weeks of training and that's only half of it. That's where most people fail out and having a background as an emt will help tremendously. Once he knocks that out the rest is smooth sailing. As for what he does for the army he doesn't have a choice. Most medics as of right now do spend 6-12 months in a clinic but it's an incredible experience because your always practicing your job. Now if we were at war he would most likely become a line medic but hopefully that doesn't happen. If he wants deployment time tell him to sign up for RASP. One more thing, he needs to start working out a lot because the physical training is very difficult of your not prepared. Tell him to start running 3-5 mile runs a couple times a week as well as working out. Push ups and sit-ups are kinda important in the army SPC Private RallyPoint Member Tue, 13 Jun 2017 18:22:04 -0400 2017-06-13T18:22:04-04:00 Response by Cpl Justin Goolsby made Jun 13 at 2017 6:57 PM https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-mos-should-my-son-choose?n=2646715&urlhash=2646715

Well first I'm going to say there's nothing wrong with wanting to set your child up for success. You say your son is interested in being a medic, has he considered being a Corpsman in the Navy? I don't know what the MOS is, but the Corpsman are the ones who take care of Marines so they have earned our respect. I would add to get your son into a civilain hospital emergency room and link him up with a trauma team. member. We send several military professionals to civilian facilities to learn "how to" conduct certain operations where gunshot wounds are more prevalent. His MOS choice should fit his reason(s) for wanting to serve. Some join for tangibles and other for intangibles. He will get both regardless of his MOS, but can receive more of either depending on his choice. Some MOSs will provide him with a more marketable skill to build on after he separates. Some less so, but these may provide more leadership training. Unless he is in a position that will provide special pay (jump, hazardous duty etc) the pay will be the same. If it's all about pay, some MOS's promote faster. If his choice was about travel and adventure then certain MOSs will provide more of that. Hopefully he is not joining totally for the pay and benefits, because he may find the lifestyle is tougher than he bargained for, and be disappointed. Each service has its own opportunities and deserves consideration. In the end, if there is no hard core family or other factor driving him toward the Army, take the best deal he can get in terms of enlistment date, pay grade, and post-training assignments. Based on my experience here are some thoughts on the other Services:
-Navy Corpsmen serve with both the Navy and the Marine Corps. If your son wants field duty, then he might talk with the Navy Recruiter to see if they could offer a post-training assignment with the Marines. Serving as a Corpsman aboard ship, even a large ship like an aircraft carrier, is a unique experience. Definitely not working in an ordinary clinic.
-Air Force medical personnel often work in clinic or hospital settings. Some are fortunate enough to become Pararescue Specialists (PJ). PJs are considered Special Operations Forces (SOF). Becoming a PJ is difficult, but if your son is up to the challenge it's a rewarding experience.
-Coast Guard rescue swimmers are similar to PJs. They are in the Department of Homeland Security in peacetime. Overall the Coast Guard's rescue mission might suit you son well whether he's a helicopter crew chief, rescue swimmer, or some other related field. At the time of his draft notice, he was a hard practicing Christian and was seeking CO status, (if you watch the Gary Cooper movie it shows it as a pretty memorable moment) and he went on to earn the MoH. and of course there is Cpl Desmond Doss we have recently become aqainted with in Hacksaw Ridge. Both are in there own way extremes but they are 2 faces of the same coin to consider (and great movies as well). In the end it is going to be your son who makes the final choice, and I wish him well in his endevores. I have read many of the recommendations here, and I have to give you my two cents worth. My son just retired as a Colonel in the medical field. He was commander of two different field hospitals in Iraq. I couldn't be prouder of him. His love for others showed through and helped him to achieve a high rank. As you can see I am really a fan of the medical field in the military.
On to another thought... Is he planning to go directly into the military from high school, or is he going to college first. My suggestion is that he go to college first and take the ROTC training offered at many of the bigger Universities. They will pay his way through college and he comes out a 2nd LT. He is then on his way being a leader of what he loves to do. The best to you and your son!! He seems to leaning towards medic/corpsman, etc. Good profession, a good "Doc" was worth his weight in platinum and we protected, loved, cherished ours totally. In the Army, even being assigned to a combat unit, he will spend time in clinics (Battalion Aid Stations) in garrison as well as being out with the troops. Yes he might get assignments to Hospitals ( great teaching, training time). Regardless how long his in, it transitions well into the civilian world- many of our "Docs" have ended up as EMT's, trauma nurses and even Doctors. Corpsmen attached to the FMF, USAF Para rescue, Army Combat medics will experience the most in the world, others will be stuck in clinics/hospitals. He needs to talk long and hard to the recruiters, and as suggested seeing if he can visit trauma centers or EMT's would be a plus. In my humblest experience there is no greater position. A medic is usually assigned to an Infantry platoon (or other combat arms platoon); however, once within that fold of those men he is charged with caring for there is a bond, an unshakable bond, that forms. This bond is formed due to our reliance on this one medic. It is therefore in our best interest to keep him as safe as we can while we are conducting our operations. I won't lie to you and say that he will never be in danger but I can tell you that there is nothing that an Infantry platoon would not do for a man we respect and admire.
Initially it may be difficult for your son, because normally Infantrymen will test him, to see if he has what it takes to be with the platoon. If he overcomes their internal scrutinization, your son will have that "golden ticket". Meaning he is no longer viewed as an "outsider" but rather a brother who has shown he has what it takes to be among us.
If your young son does choose this endeavor know that he will be walking in the footsteps of former medics who have made the difference in many men's lives. He can choose a MOS that can transition easily into the civilian sector or look at other MOS's that offer experiences that you cannot do unless you are in the military. Some people will make a top 10 list of what they hope to qualify for and then just see what is offered. There a too many times that a kid is dead set on a certain job or jobs that when they sit down with the MEPS Guidance Counselor on what he/she qualify for, they completely choose something different when they find out they can do jobs they didn't think of at first. Making the decision to become a 68W Combat Medic is a great choice as I have been doing it for over half my military career. This field is not for everyone life and death decisions have to be made. Personal faith is never an option. That is how some will deal with the consequences of the actions. Some times doing the wrong thing at the right time for the right reasons is better then not doing it at all. As for preparing for and educating himself, obtaining the NREMT for the EMT is a great way to start and learn however everywhere I have seen you have to be 18 to take the course. https://www.nremt.org/rwd/public/document/emt All Army medics do this first and must pass and maintain this to keep their 68W MOS. As an Army Reservist or National Guard member a lot of them do not work in this field in their civilian lives. In civilian hospitals the ER-techs or PCT can only do what the facility allows them to do and what their education allows them to do. If his career path is reserves or guard I would suggest that he go into the active military. This is where he will get the most out of his training and be allowed to do a lot more then what he would do anywhere else. Also, he will have more opportunities to specialize in other areas that reserves and guard aren't allowed to go into. As an 11B, I can tell you very few people have the mentality for it going into BCT/AIT. Much of that mentality to "close with and destroy" is pounded into our heads (not always literally.) Some people do not have the warrior mindset, and that is okay. There are plenty of other jobs in the Army that need filling.

If he has a natural knack for medicine, there is nothing wrong with being a 68W. Also as an 11B, I served with tons of medics. After AIT they did much of the basic soldier tasks along with us as long as it didn't interfere with their medic training. He is still only 16, he has a couple more years to discover what he wants his MOS to be.

Minor side note. In my opinion, being a medic is probably one of the best jobs to have in the Army if you don't plan on making it a career. There are some things he should know. He won't likely be fighting. Medics get put in literally every unit in the the army. He could end up in a line unit, a support unit or even a hospital. Even in a line platoon he probably won't do any fighting. We try our best to keep the doc out of the fight because if he goes down the platoon is in trouble. In many respects it can be the worst job in the platoon. He will likely be there when one of his brothers die. He needs to develop trust from everyone including the platoon sergeant who's likely been in for 12-20+ years. He has to monitor his guys health every day as people get sick in tight quarters. He has to go on every mission because most units only get one doc per platoon. And he could spend a large portion of his career in the line and then be sent to a hospital or vis versa. If he wants a good transition to Civilian Occupation, the 68W would provide him a solid foundation. However that is as an Emergency Medical Technician. If this is the level he is interested in as a Military and Civilian Career, and if he feels comfortable in that, it is his decision. I would suggest that even as a 68W he at least take Correspondence Training in other paramedical areas to broaden his skill base as it helps with accelerated promotions as well as functional skill development. As I stated, I was experienced with 11B (Team Leader) and when injured, transitioned to Combat Medical Specialist 91A, then to Medical NCO and Patient Care Specialist, and finally to Behavioral Science Specialist (91G30). Each has its learning curve and burnout levels but they increase your functional capabilities and makes you more important to the TEAM concept in that even if you were just trained in the entry level, you would still acquire a skill set that would allow you to provide necessary health care in areas that there exists a void in the team. There is nothing wrong with carrying 3 MOS/s at the same time!

For the know: I had my Military Training and experience evaluated for College Credit at Liberty University and was granted 100 Semester Hours based on my Military experience alone. Most of the credit was in Nursing and Health Care Administration. Therefore seize the day with what you want as a career, and be flexible enough to train in augmentation skills that will translate into College Credits and Civilian Professional Licensure and Certifications. First things first (1) Study, study, and study for the ASVAB. As you already know that score/s opens the door to more and more choices, (2) His interests and beliefs will stand by him when nothing else will...even Mom, so if he is dead set on being a medic, at least for now, I suggest support that goal, and (3) no matter what he chooses, or the path he chooses to travel to get there, he must consider what job that will train him for when he gets out or retires. That one is harder sometimes when you are that young, but it is an important consideration. Retirement from anything is usually not that enjoyable after a bit, unless you find ways to serve others...and after reading what you wrote...that will be even MORE important to him. If he still has questions in his heart regarding God's will and life in general, he isn't going to be ready to be a combat medic. A medic has no time to question the morality and theology behind war as their primary concern is risking everything to save someone injured on the battlefield. With that being said, combat would be less likely than AD. My take, having been a combat medic, have him go to college, then medical school.
